RAYMOND E. FRANCIS Principal Weather Vanes - North, South, East, West, moved by the wind, they point the directions at the degrees of the circle which their arrows' arcs describe. They tell the ways that each of us may choose to go. As the wind affects the directions that the vane shall point, so may events and pressures determine our way. But it is well to remember that the determinism of the wind can affect the freedom of movement in the weather vane only as its nature allows. The weather vane has a way of life built into its freedom to move. It is a useful, reassuring, graceful, familiar, friendly, ornamental self controlling, and reliable instrument. As the members of this class meet the determinisms of life our most sincere wish is that each may fashion an internal integrity so that intentional choices of direction may be as strongly focused and as reliable as are the self-restrictions of the weather vane. Friel, bade farewell to the, familiar and hallowed halls which have reaped the bounty of his thirty-six years of devoted service, Mr. Friel came to the new Iohn Marshall High School in 1926 to teach mathematics. Three years later he was made head of the mathematics department, a position he held until 1944, when he became Marshall's Vice-Principal, In addition to his academic contributions, Mr. Friel supervised many extra-curricular activities, two of which were Marshall's winning basketball team, in the early days and more recently, the National Honor Society. The challenge of Iohn Marshall High School, in Mr. Friel's mind, was to try to bring the best out of each student so he will work up to his capacity and beyond it. Ir is most fitting to say that Mr. Friel met his challenge and went beyond it in his effort to make Iohn Marshall a school worthy of praise. Surely such a devoted servant to the welfare of all of us is entitled to the highest degree of respect and admiration. Mr. Friel, the Iohn Quill salutes you. MRS. EDITH OLMSTEAD MR. EVERETT GERTNER Registrar School Specialists Our school's specialists, Mrs. Olmstead, registrar, Mr. Gertner, psychologist, the Office staff, and the library staff have all greatly aided both students and faculty. Arrang- ing schedules, keeping records, and giving general information are but a few of the jobs performed by these people to make school business func- tion smoothly. Psychologist OFFICE STAFF K. Taylor, M. Markus, E, Elmer, F Lippa. LIBRARY STAFF R. Simpson, L. I-Iorner, I. Piazza MISS MARY C. FOLEY Head English English has never been considered more important than it is today in this nuclear age. The need for clear, direct communication and true under- standing and respect for the individual and groups can be fostered by train- ing in effective speech and writing and in the reading skills. Literature, both classic and modern, is Hthe laboratory course in human nature which helps everyone to understand humanity, past and present. This year the English Department has made use of films, Hlmstrips. recordings of poetry and plays, and speed reading devices. An overhead projector has been used to illustrate the structure and use of language in student themes and tests. English is not only basic to all other subjects, but is a dynamic course in itself. The New York Regents examination for seniors this year is called Comprehensive English, an apt name for the goal of our Iohn Marshall English Department. MR. IOI-IN ALLEN MRS. ANNA BROWN MRS. PFLAUM Head MISS MARY ANN BOYLE i Mathematics The mathematics which we teach at Iohn Marshall is part of the con- tinuum of mathematical knowledge to which the child should first be introduced in kindergarten, and which should continue until he completes his formal education. Since each individual will differ in the ease and ability with which he will master mathematics we have three levels of work: Regents, non- regents, and remedial. It is our object to give to each young person the ' opportunity to rise to the maximum degree of development of which he or she is capable. For the unusually gifted we provide the opportunity to study calculus, so that advanced mathematics and physics may be studied with the proper tools at hand. We further divide the regents groups into honors sections so that the more able students may study the subjects in depth. To properly assess each students ability we make use of all available tests, and mental measurements. To properly teach the courses, we have trained teachers, assisted by modern teaching aids and equipment. MR. JOSEPH H. CONROY MR. PAUL T. EPPING MR. MONROE I, LORD MRS. EDITH B. We are in a global race unprecedented since the beginning of time. Behind each of these stirring headline-producing events is the scientist and engineer. These specialists must receive training . . . training in critical thinking training in the ability to solve problems by the scientific method, training in the development of accuracy and the attention to detail. To develop these abilities, to point out our dependence upon Science in all phases of our modern life, to make students aware of career opportunities in the fields of Science and Engineering have been the goals of the Science Department. The Social Studies Department is represented in every grade level at Iohn Marshall ranging from New York State history in the seventh grade to electives in economics and problems of democracy in the twelfth grade. The department stresses the need for understanding the problems of the past so that the solution of those problems can lead to a better country and world. The connection of a living yesterday with a vital living tomorrow is the essence of all history. Through the use of constantly changing teach- ing techniques and up-to-date resources, the teachers of the Social Studies Department strive to help their students achieve an understanding of the importance of history in their lives. Personal-use business students will be balancing their checking accounts and planning the financial adventure of a new home: and others will be taking down lecture notes in Briefhand and typing their own term papers. LEACH Lan uage Foreign language learning has become a matter of national interest and concern, the most compelling evidence of which was the enactment by Congress of the National Defense Education Act in the summer of 1958 and the Com- missioner of Education Act in the summer of 1958. The Commissioner of Education has been authorized to conduct research on more effective methods of teaching modern foreign languages and to develop specialized materials for use in such training. While the basic objective of Latin is reading Latin literature, that of the modern foreign languages today is communication - in all its forms. This is where our new language laboratory comes to our aid. Tapes and discs provide opportunity for pupils to hear a variety of native voices F- men's, women's, and children's - at varying speeds. Each syllable of the foreign language is clearly heard through the headsets. With the laboratory, learning concentrates on ear training - how it sounds rather than what it looks like. After all, we do listen and talk much more than we read and write. .v ' f' fish, Fw,,:H2.if-f-f::x's:rtfEi?f.sefew- 1.21.,iff25:-fis'a,r:,a,5f!s-:ri:'.:ii 'fri'-,Q W it SQ- g'2.'5:i4iig5i?m iA4:':i J ,, - . :5,':g:'s:,ae-ssgjm rf, ' V-925+ w,-fz :f:'. . ,r:f1 -sian., fig. -: --, '..:.-fir . iff- -I sw sigfhfa .S fr -A .- ,. .Q 53- i, 1 Ze 5 i t S, , ' 1-- . , ,Qf,9?ff:, - -- ' 1, iv aa : .fa . -:- . .. ,V -1' K , 3 . ar NWS 999969- A fr . ., ,. -if - H .fS. The many art forms and media including watercolors, tempra, pen and ink drawing, wood lamination, cut paper, chalks and char- coal, basic letter forms, and paper mache were studied. Great eras and repre- sentative figures in art history were also studied. The Music Department has had many occasions to entertain the school and the Marshall Singers, a talented Vocal group, have made many appearances outside the school during the year. In addition to basic performance skills, sltludents have learned appreciation through the study of music history and t eory, KS . MR. GEORGE W. CORWIN MRS. GAIL GRIFFIN MR. ROBERT E, MORAN MR. These opportunities enable pupils to get first hand knowledge of industrial skills, shop management, safe working pro- cedures, working together as a group, solving mechanical problems, good industrial work habits, respect for power machines, and shop maintenance. Drafting students were taught the skills of blue print reading, construction of working drawings, and related shop information. All students learned some practical applications of mathematics and science, the degree of quality and quantity demanded of industry, and respect for each other's privileges and responsibilities. All of these items can be carried over into later life and be of invaluable service to a young person upon leaving high school. MR. MARINUS I-IEUSEVELDT MR. ROYAL HILL MR. LEE F. PI-IELAN MR. The present day situation emphasizes physical Htness more fashionably than ever and we on the Health Education staff are constantly striving to in- tegrate the new with the old keeping in mind that mental improvement goes hand in hand with better physical condition. Our young folks at Marshall this year have been doing a sterling job in building Esprit de Corps and learning to be strong in sacrificial quality, in courage, and in loyalty so that Marshall may reflect its true colors as socially efficient citizens of our democratic society. It is with pride that the Health Education staff serves the students of Iohn Marshall and hopes sincerely that every girl and boy has profited in the per- fection of the individual in relation to himself, to nature, to society, and to a philosophy of life. MERRILL SCUDDER IUERGEN BLIECHNER The School Work Program is a special three year high school program for selected pupils. This program has been planned to prepare both boys and girls for better personal and family liv- ing, for good citizenship, and for choosing, get- ting, and holding a job. School and work ex- perience are provided throughout the program to help develop understanding in these areas. During the first two years occupational and social skills are emphasized in addition to aca- demic skills, Classroom instruction is supple- mented by training in special education shops where students learn many skills needed on the job. The third year of the program combines class- room work with actual on-the-job work exper- ience in many different jobs. Classroom activities are further developed through these job oppor- tunities. Actual job placement completes the School-Work Program. MR. RICHARD ST. IAM ES VICKI CARLSON ROBERT CHARLTON 5, 'V QLBHQLE gwfiiiw li ' 'f 1 , 3:11 - .alifxifi ' fu :- if--: .' This year's Marshall Docket was bigger and better than ever. Under the leadership of Mr. Iohnson, the editors and re- porters succeeded in turning out eight issues of the Docket. Many changes have been made. The editors of the second and third pages, Iudy Boyce, Iudy Renner, Claudia Mongin, and Marie Lepri, have devoted more space to editorializing by putting Today's Guy and Girl on the third page. An attempt has been made to have more underclassmen write, to give them more experience. The first and fourth page editors, Margaret Heerkens and Dick W. Smith, have tried to keep the school and sports news up to date. First Row: C. DeHond, B. Turner, I. Davis, R. Springer, Mr, Wood. Both BASKETBALL triumphs came at the expense of rival Edison. Although the team finished in the cellar position in the lnterscholastic League, valuable experience was gained 1961,62 by the younger members, which included sophomores and one freshman. This year the lurists started a new rivalry with McQuaid Iesuit High School on a losing note, but hope to improve their record in years to come. With constant injuries that plagued the team-, the hoopmen struggled to the finish with a very diminished squad. This will leave the team with a good foundation for the next three years. Two of the outstanding freshmen on the team were Mike Cavallaro and Tony Cotsworth. Too many times, however, a boy who has all the talent required for this sport, but not the size, cannot make the squad until he is a sophomore or junior. By then it is too late to gain the experi- ence needed by all good players. The Freshmen Football team gives boys of the same size a chance to play together and learn together so that by thebtime they have grown enough to make the Varsity Squad, they will be able to carry the ball in fine fashion.
