Despite the withering glances of the upper classmen the group took rootn and their second year found them ready to take their respective places in Marshall High. Now at last, when We hear a responsive roar from the left of the auditorium every time the strains of Once again- rend the air, we turn to see this same group with all the dignity and prestige of Juniors. Again a movie and various sales help to fill the coffers and make possible indulgences and merry making. In springtime the Juniors' thoughts turn to thoughts of dramatic production. Stark, three years ago, for the purpose of bringing rural and city students into closer association, and to promote better agricul- ture throughout the county, the Alpha Agrarian Club has been one of the most active organizations of Marshall High School. Beside the regular officers, an Ag Council has been created to perform functions that could not be so readily accomplished by a larger unit. The membership has increased to sixty, and the achievements of this group are many and varied. Due to the splendid co-operation of the faculty members, the student body, and an efhcient staff, the Zed, bi-weekly newspaper sponsored by the club, has become a. permanently established publication. A professor at Ann Arbor told our team: Your extemporaneous work is of an exceptionally high caliber5 you have a pleasant and sportsmanlike appearance5 and you have a clear and logical analysis of the question. This is from the Cass City judge: 1'You understand both sides of the question better than any team 1 have judged this year. For further proof of excellency we have received the University of Michigan Wall Plaque Trophy from the Detroit Free Press for being among the sixty-four schools out of the original two hundred and thirty-five to come through the first elimination process. Then one night in January under softly glowing Chinese lanterns, thirty-five wistful Chinese maidens danced and told in song a sweet story of two sisters' love. Under the spell of the swaying lanterns, the purple beauty of wistaria, and the glow- ing, throbbing music, the Glee Club girls gave an interpretation of f'The Feast of the Little Lanterns that never C U could be equalled. However, the spell of the Orient was lost immediately after the presentation of the operetta, for the girls, forgetting grease paint, cushions, tea cups, and fans, raced for the cooking room where ice cream and cake were generously served. Credit for the drilling and training of the girls goes to both Mrs. Clark and Miss Marsh. The girls presented each with a beautiful corsage on the night of the operetta. The Glee Club furnished a share of the program at one of the teacher's parties. This group sang before the Parent Teachers Association, and took part in the Edu- cational program at the Monday Club. In preparation for each event they spent hours of practice, but always felt well repaid for their efforts. Last, but not least, a girls' quartette was started, and as none of the members graduate this June, these girls hope to contribute to various entertainments next year. September closed with nothing out of the ordinary, as did October, except for a banquet given by the Rotary Club of Marshall. In November the Glore Cup Contest started which later was won by the lldarshall Scouts Cthey belonging to the Battle Creek District., December passed uneventfully as if to give a peaceful ending to the scout activities of 1927. --U e fee-eff '--'l928 THEDIAL -Y K-as is he s s Calhoun County Normal The Calhoun County Normal Class of 1927-1928 presents the largest enroll- ment since its organization in 1905. To some people home economics means just cooking but, in reality, there are three phases, cooking, sewing and the digest of Emily Post. Would you like to know who she is? VVell she's the person who says not to gangplank your silvewvare at dinner. Cl presume it's permissahle at luncheonj, not to arrive at dinner too early or too late, not to sip soup as though you were singing a fraternity song, never call on a young lady at twelve P. M., and oh, numerous other don'ts'l. By the end of the first year cooking students have learned more than how to boil water without burning it. For instance, at the beginning of the school year one enterprising student explained that the difference between cocoa and chocolate was that one came in tin cans, the other in bars. Now ask the young lady what the dif- ference is? The sewing classes have broadened their knowledge during the past year almost as much as the cooking class has. A style show was put on by the students. Here they displayed the result of their arduous labors. The show was a display of brilliant colors and we must admit that some of the girls looked like real models as they walked across the stage to show their stuffn. The pupils of the sixth to the twelfth grades inclusive avail themselves of the instruction offered in these courses which are so efliciently managed by lwiss Bebertz. t A 'M c 'are avf r'av l9Z8 vvl l N 1 1 I I l I i l l I ....... It Was a hard fought game but the red and black lost by the close margin of three points. The team won fourth place in the Little Ten . Much credit is due to Coach Carr for developing the team as it was probably the lightest team in the conference. He worked hard to develop a fast team and the boys worked with him. The first game of the season was played at home with Mason High School, September 16, with the red and black gridders on the long end of the score 12-0. Touchdowns were made by Deane. and Kibler. The latter ran 98 yards for a touchdown. On Friday, September 23, Marshall lost to Grand Ledge by the score of 13-0. Caty, Grand Ledge captain and full back, scored both touchdowns by hard line plunging. Oct. 1, Marshall was again defeated by Coldwater's 1'ed and white eleven by the score of 25-7. The Coldwater boys played all around the Marshall team from beginning to end. Oct. 8, Marshall was declared loser for the third consecutive time when she lost to Eaton Rapids by the close score of 16-13. VValtz and Kibler scored for Marshall. Eaton Rapids made both touchdowns by passes, one of them being over the line with three Marshall players around the receiver but unable to touch the ball. On Saturday afternoon, Oct. 15, Marshall broke the jinx that had been following them to out-of-town games for three years. The red and black gridders journeyed to Hastings and easily won by the score of 20-0. Kibler scored two touchdowns and Gled- stone scored one, and two points after touchdowns, by passes from Kibler. Oct. 22, Marshall lost to st1'ong and heavy Hillsdale gridders by the score of 24414. Marshall started out with a bang when she, scored two touchdowns, by Gledstone and Kibler, and then weakened. The field was in very poor shape, being all sand, and the Marshall players couldn't get started as they wanted to. On Oct. 29, Marshall downed the strong Charlotte aggregation by the score of 20-7. Charlotte was Iirst to score and soon after, on the kick off, Waltz ran, seventy yards through a broken field for Marshall's Iirst touchdown. Kibler scored later, and XValtz plunged through the line for his second, touchdown. Gledstone received the ball twice from Kibler for extra points. Nov. 4, Marshall journeyed to Three Rivers to play the last game before the Albion battle. VVhat a day! It had been raining all day and mud covered the gridiron and there were large puddles of water here and there. Marshall started 0E with the first touchdown by a pass, Kibler to Gledstone. Three Rivers scored in the second quarter twice, making the score at the half 12-6. Three Rivers again scored in the third quarter and obtained a safety while Marshall slipped through for one more touchdown by Van Voorhees. The game ended 21-12. THE ALBION GAME The annual struggle with Marshall's traditional foe. was held on Armistice Day, November 11. Before a large crowd of football fans Marshall High School went down to defeat to Albion by a score of 83-0. Albion's first score came after three minutes of play, when they carried. the ball over. The second score followed within five minutes, and after that it was a steady procession. Gledstone ran back kickoifs and punts as did Waltz in an unusual fashion. In fact they got the punts and kickoffs much better than Albion, but that seemed to be the only place where they did excel. The M men who graduate are Capt. Geo. Gledstone, Lawrence Kibler, L. J. Feb. 4, Marshall found little trouble in taking Olivet High School, using second and third teams most of the time. The final score was llflarshall 44, Olivet 4. Feb. 7, llrlarshall gave Albion the biggest scare of the season when she held the red and white cagers to the close score of 28-25. Although Marshall lost the game it was the nearest to defeat the champions of 1926-27 had come. Feb. 10, after the long journey to Sturgis, Marshall, followed by a few loyal rooters, defeated the Sturgis High basketball team for the second time during the season by the score of 29-23. Feb. 17, Marsliall proved she was much stronger than at the beginning of the season when she defeated Coldwater in a hard fought battle 25-23. The red and white quintet showed strength at the final quarter but it was too late. Feb. 24, the red and black quintet journeyed to Charlotte only to repeat the victory at the beginning of the season by a larger score. This time Coach Carr's cagers defeated the orange and black quintet by the score of 28-21. Feb. 17, Albion came to Nlarshall and found the red and black quintet sleeping and easily won by a score of 28-7. The defeat made the Marshall boys sit up and take notice and they were eager to meet Albion in the District Tournament. v District Tournament Albion was robbed of all possibilities of the State Championship when Marshall upset them in the Kresge Gym for Class B championship, winning over them by a good margin 24-18. The game was an exciting one but Marshall was leading from beginning to end, and Albion never threatened. Regional Tournament After Marshall won the District Championship, she had a chance at the regional tournament and succeeded in her first two games winning from Dowagiac 29-20 and a hard fought close battle with Three Rivers 23-21. The red and black boys were either going to be the regional champs or runners up and runners up was the best they could do because they lost to the St. Joseph team 26-15. The game was fast and accurate shooting on both teams was witnessed, but Zitta, St. Joe captain, ran circles around every Marshall player, scoring eleven of his teamls points. The boys were tired and worn out and came home and called the basketball season a very successful one. Herman Crampton, lllarshall forward, was picked on all-conference Class B first team and Lawrence Kibler, center, was picked on the second team. Those who will receive their major letter are: Captain Edward VValtz, Herman Crampton, Lawrence Kibler, George Gledstone, Vinton Stealy and Albert Schuler.
