We commend the Art and Music departments this year for successfully providing the student body with the means to preserve our sanity- if we had any in the first place. 9 FINE ARTS' FOREIGN LANSUA 21 If you walk in this door, and up these stairs, and walk down this hall and enter this room, you will be at 45° longitude and 42° latitude. Now. what class are you in? You don’t know? Neither do I. but we re sure the Social Studies department knows. In M-U there are students of all shapes, sizes and colors. Some of our students need help in reading and some need help in writing. Some students need assistance in things like maneuvering from class to class and typing. For these special needs, we have our Special Education department. OCIAL STUD! 22 Opposite Page: Top To Bottom: L To R: Robert Baker. Joe Jocketty. Art Chiodo. Sheridan Jaeche. Lyle Christensen. Both words describe the Open School perfectly. The semi-structured atmosphere provides a natural learning environment for the students. The Open School is an excellent opportunity for the development of responsibility and the acquisition of self-motivation. 25 Math is either hard or easy. There is no other way for it to be. We at M-U had both extremes in our math classes this year. Whichever the case may be with you, math can be as rewarding as turning 19. TH'MlTH'MATM'ilATH'Mi 26 The world we live in is such a fascinating place. It hides millions of secrets that people miss because they don’t know how, where, or when to look. They forget to ask why. At M-U you can study the stars, ecology, physics, chemistry, biology and a number of other sciences. All of them can answer that question: why. Opposite Page: Top To Bottom: L To R: Lestor Twedcll. Marshall-U offers a very diversified industrial arts program, from woodworking, graphic arts, and metals to a new. very sophisticated plastics technology program which is the only one of its kind in the state. They're the over-aged seniors who hang around the first floor. Now. if you've got a problem with your schedule or something, they'll probably help you out — I mean, maybe if they're not trying to give you a hard time. So you just hop down there anytime (and be pushy). If you have an appointment. you might as well forget it. They’re probably playin' hanky panky in the halls. ADMINISTRATION ADMINISTRAl 30 “You there! Yes. you. I want to tell you about a great group of ladies. “Yeah? Yeah. They were in the office, and I mean to tell you I was surprised at all the activity. They were pounding on the typewriters, answering telephones and finding students who've been gone. What amazed me the most was they always kept cool-M-l. They never let anything get out of hand. David •Seniors Not Pictured 87 It all begins with registration, a mad dashing of the student body trying to get into English classes, hoping they'll get into Chemistry and wondering how they’ll get into college if Math Analysis and Advanced French are offered the same hour. Junior high students not only register differently, they learn differently too. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders have a choice of the traditional graded program. the ungraded program, or the open middle school. The graded seventh and eighth programs have a schedule with electives in the morning and academic classes in the afternoon. The ungraded students have four core classes in the morning where they work at their own pace in math, science, and english. Another junior high alternative is open school. The students make contracts for special projects. This year there were special groups including a play writing group and a newspaper. 92 For junior high students who need a specially structured learning environment there is Adjusted Learning Environment to teach academic basics with set goals for the students to reach. In it’s second year of existence the senior high open school occupies three rooms. The open school students learn about subjects of their choice with little guidance. Many students achieve a great deal of satisfaction from what they have accomplished. Tt'tt Urban Arts and Secondary Center are programs that help students to get new experiences with different professions. Urban Arts is a chance for people to experience arts like dance, music, poetry and theatre under the instruction of an artist in his own studio. The Secondary Center lets students take vocational classes in other locations while attending high school. % This year, six M-U students were chosen by General Mills Chemicals to learn through observation and experience the profession of lab technician. a rewarding kind of learning. The AVTV department with its sheets of red tape and its shrinking faculty continues to serve the school by broadcasting videotapes and delivering equipment. In fall the M U band began an eventful year perform mg at the first football game The fans welcomed the band back As winter approached holiday music echoed through the halls In spring, selected members prepared solos, and another year had passed. kj T -. 1 ■ 1 Ay-1 • 1 i Concert Bond L To R Top Row Joel Wcst.icot Greg Simpson. Homecoming is more than a popularity contest. It’s decorating the hall with orange streamers because the store ran out of red, and wondering if the class of '76 will win again (even though they graduated). It's the microphone breaking in the middle of your song at the talent show. For the first time it's a breakfast. It's a great football game (even though it's the only one they lost all season). It's dancing 'til midnight. It’s spirit and excitement. Most of all it's FUN! 102 HOMECOMING Top To Bottom: L To R: Jill Rainey and Walter Whittaker. A real down-to-earth square dance, where the girl asks the guy (or vice versa). You guessed it ... Sadie Hawkins! This year there were two marryin' sams. a jail, refreshments. and even a fun lovin’ caller! Unbelievable! Whether they sat on bales of hay. or dosey doed. or went stag or as a couple, got married or thrown in jail, everyone had a good time! 106 O.S.A. is a group of students who meet every Wednesday (almost) in the home ec lounge to plan school activities. This year's activities included a Sadie Hawkins dance and a 50’s dance. The group uses the profits to help finance other school organizations. O.S.A. Back Row, L To R: Marcia Milgrom. Heather Petty. Debate is a formal argument, a fight of words. This year's team did very well, especially since they had little experience. Mr. Seeden, (the coach) expects next year’s team also to do well. Theatre is an energetic experience. It is entertainment for the performer and for the audience. It can be a career. Theatre is a special therapy in that it is a productive way to use emotions and energy and teaches control in discipline and relaxation. 109 This Page. Top To Bottom. L To R: Bill Wallace. Rose Parks, who was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. and Martin Luther King who unified the black people through peaceful demonstrations. We are thankful for the accomplishments of these great men and women. Lift every voice and sing. Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty, Let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies. Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us. Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us. Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on 'till victory is won. 115 p THE YALLI AESTAURANT THE YALLI MARQUETTE NATIONAL BANKQ AT UNIVERSITY r.Tr W4SU M6T0Afat OAK Cf 370-2400 of 77” ‘Congratulations to the class of 'll” from RALPH JERRY’S 801 4th St. S.E.
