No longer is there the “man down in the office who will get you if you're bad. This was made possible by having three administrators to take care of the six grades. This allowed for more specialization and a chance to get to know the administrators as people. The administrators were each very busy with their special jobs besides the time they spent promoting good relationships between faculty and students. As it was put by one administrator. ‘ thc school is as good as the students. Because of their commitment and dedication, the administrators helped make Marshall-U a good school. The teachers hoped to raise the enrollment of students in the department and so offered courses not only for the college science minded but also courses for the generally interested student. Although there was a decrease in teachers from last year and no funding in sight from the S.E.A. grant, the members of the department fell that their department had done a “top notch job of meeting the needs of the situation in the school. 17 THIS PAGE. Amen. 19 English at M-U this past year dealt with a whole realm of ideas. The new quarter system made it possible for us to take three different English courses and the elective curriculum enabled us to study intensively in an area of our own interest. We read everything from Geoffrey Chaucer to Will Shakespeare, from Homer to Albcc. We wrote stories, made films and acted in plays. The ideas with which we were bombarded throughout the year, stimulated our own and helped to increase our skills in the art of communication. 20 OPPOSITE PAGE; UPPER LEFT TO RIGHT: Anne DeMulh. With the quarter system and electives giving more variety, social science teachers hoped that students would come to class because they were interested and not just because they weren’t allowed in the halls or because they needed the credit for graduation. With a few new arrivals and lots of new ideas, the department showed itself capable of handling most of the problems that education involves. With financing from the S.E.A. grant and the minds of teachers who cared and were willing to experiment, the social studies or social science class offered a new experience in learning. 22 social studies studies- department OPPOSITE PAGE; UPPER RIGHT. Reward: Greater knowledge, higher level of understanding. The Business Education department sent out it’s plea for greater enrollment and interest this year. The department believes that their skills arc a necessary part of a students ability to achieve in higher education. The Home Economics department succeeded in bringing together the Suzy Homemakers of the World” and filled the school with the smells of fresh baked bread. The sounds of printing presses and saws and the smells of sawdust and ink issued from the industrial art room and echoed through the halls. Together these three departments provided the opportunity for students wishing to continue their education in vocational skills to receive a basic and comprehensive background in the field of their choice. 28 OPPOSITE PAGE; UPPER LEFT TO RIGHT: Gary Slrom. They say it has to be big to be good. This year the students at M-U proved that wrong. They didn't have much to spend in the first place. No. it wasn’t the money that played a major role, it was people. There was a lot of feeling for homecoming this year. People advertising. People decorating. People rehearsing. People organizing. This year it was a success because of people getting involved and it’s people who make people happy. 81 82 83 ‘kbtde debate debate delate debate. debits debate debate debate debate The administration of justice has long been an area of concern for civilized man and increasingly so in recent years. This program was awarded federal funds under the Office of Education’s Experimental Schools Program. Operating within the Minneapolis Public School setting and serving approximately 2500 students, the SEA program is exploring several significant questions: ••Can public schools offer VIABLE learning alternatives for parents and children? ••(iiven a choice of learning styles, will parents and children find education more receptive to their needs? ••Is it possible to increase parent, faculty and student involvement in the public school processes? THE CONTEMPORARY SCHOOL Serving children in grades kindergarten through 6th. the Contemporary School places priority on a structured, teacher-directed learning environment. Although the program is committed to providing intense education in basic skills, it is also committed to implementing of promising practices into the curriculum. THE CONTINUOUS PROGRESS PROGRAM Recognizing that children should be allowed to progress through school at their own rate, the Continuous Progress Program was created to serve children ages $ through 12. Grouping is organized totally on an achievement level basis. Mornings arc devoted to the study of math and language arts and the afternoons arc structured to allow children the freedom to pursue classes of their own interest. 94 THE OPEN SCHOOL A firm belief in the importance of providing lor and expanding effective learning underlies the Open School. Children ages 5 to 12 select the type of curriculum that best suits their needs. A basic assumption of the program emphasizes that as parents and children become more involved in their education, it will then become more meaningful and relevant for them. THE FREE SCHOOL Serving 70 kindergarten through 12th grade students, the Free School is the most experimental alternative open to parents and children. Effective development is considered to be the main priority by those involved in the program. Students arc encouraged to assume more responsibility for their education and to pursue those areas that are of interest to them. Apprenticeship programs have been established that enable many students to work with skilled professionals. Effort is put forth to provide many community-wide learning activities for the students. MARSHALL-UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL Transition to a quarter system, creation of 7th and 8th grade team models, exploration of new curriculum und off site learning centers are all signs that the secondary school is striving to offer many educational alternatives for students. Plans arc underway to revise the 7th and 8th grade program and to introduce an expanded counseling program so as to effectively meet the needs of children coming from diverse elementary experiences. 95 UPPER LEFT TO RIGHT: Dolores Dawis, Gwen Schofield.
