English Curriculum Stresses Readzhg Above: Mrs. Mary Gebhart, half day English teacher for Grades 7 and 8, arrives at MHS by noon. A new program was in effect in which some teachers eoine just for the morn- ing. or afternoon classes. Phonics, poetry, and the S.R.A. reading pro- gram were among the subject matter studied by underclassineng along with grarninar and liter- ature, freshmen studied the novel Great Exjzrcta- tions. The sophomores struggled with complex sen- tence structure and composition writing. Juniors undertook the art of speech-making while seniors elaborated on English literature which included a study of Shakespeareis Macbeth. Special subjects such as play production and journalism were also available to senior high stu- dents.
