Underclassmen 66—85 kHMAi 111 u m m Foreword The primary concern of American education today is not the development of the appreciation of the good life in young gentlemen born to the purple . . . Our purpose is to cultivate in the largest number of our future citizens an appreciation of both the responsibilities and the benefits which come to them because they are Americans ond are free. — James Bryant Conant Education in this satellite-missile age demands more, challenges more, and requires a complete dedication to the principles of education-for-all. If we students fail to appreciate our heritage and adopt an attitude of let George do it, the loss of self-government and precious rights may too soon occur. When power is concentrated into George's hands, he soon takes on the attributes of an Adolph, a Benito, or, even, a Fidel. Over a century and a half ago Thomas Jefferson said, I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. Ours, then, is a mighty task and students of the sixties find their job a fulltime and challenging undertaking. The school's task, therefore, expands and becomes increasingly significant. Here at Marshall our lives revolve around the school's. We have joined the school's crusade to raise the standards, ideas, and purpose. Many friendships have been cultivated while we were studying the past and preparing for the future. Our out-of-school endeavors included many clubs, athletic contests, and traditional festivities. This yearbook has been published with one objective: to capture Marshall's 1960-61 school year between its covers. We hope the Cardinal will serve to bridge the post and bring to mind the pleasant memories of the year just gone. 3
