1959 Cardinal Annual Publication John Marshall High School Minneapolis, Minnesota Editor: Margie Roff Assistant Editor: Carolyn Mondyke Business Manager: Judy Moslet Advisor: Mr. Daniel 1 FOREWORD Another year has flown by for Marshall students, and as we look back, not only will we remember the excitement at Homecoming and Mardi Gras, but we will also remember the chatter outside the building before school, the search for library books, the long-awaited lunch hour, and the sigh of relief when school finally ends for the day. And now the 1959 Cardinal presents a record of the events and happenings that occurred during the past school year . . . 2 CONTENTS Faculty 5 Sports 15 Classes 35 Seniors 51 Organizations - 69 School Life 85 SCHOOL CALENDAR School Begins September 3 College Information Day March 10 Football Preview September 8 Hi-Y Flag Program March 11 Homecoming October 3 Winter Letter Awards Program March 17 Fire Prevention Program October 13 G.A.A.-Faculty Basketball Game March 18 P.T.A. In this game, the Marshall Cards, with an overwhelming desire to win, romped over Edison twelve to six. The high point of the game was the sixty-five yard run by Junior halfback Bob Riley. The Marshall fans went wild when, late in the fourth quarter, this was followed by another touchdown on a quarterback Roy Christoferson to end Jerry Hess, making the score Junior quarterback Roy Chrutopherson throw a paw lote in the third quarter which went fwe|ve j0 zero complete to Jerry Hes for our econd touchdown and a 12-0 lead. SPIRIT AND DETERMINATION were the key words of Marshall's 1958 football team. Head coach Deitz stated many times that this year's team was the most spirited he has ever coached. If the winning of a game depended only upon the spirit, determination, and desire of a team, Marshall would surely have come out of the season with a perfect record. Although a number of players will be lost through graduation, there are many boys coming up who are expected to strengthen next year's team considerably. Those who were members of the 1957 championship sophomore squad will be seniors and because of this Coach Deitz will be looking forward to a great year in 1959. The stance of the assistant cooch, Don Sovell, clearly demonstrates the fact the coaches play the game os hard from the sidelines as do the ployers on the field. In Mr. Deitz's often repeated words, Mr. Sovell proved to be invaluable throughout the season. Picture by Mr. Daniel SOPHOMORE GRIDDERS Row Is R, Roenke, M. Anderson. R. Arms. R. Musi I, B. Gleason. Right: Our heavyweight Killer Bob Kolinoski puts a sleeper hold on his unlucky opponent from Vocational. Our victory depended on his motch. This picture shows the outcome — another Marshall Triumph. Picture by Dave Peterson. This year's wrestling squad was one of the most successful Marshall has had in recent years. They won the city championship by beating West in the lost match of the year. The team won all of their matches except the one against Washburn, which they tied. Many of the individuals on the team proved that they know their stuff about the grunt and groan sport. Three of the men (Bob Johnson, Merle Peterson, and Bob Kalinoski) took firsts in the city meet, while Bob Gromek and Steve Edgell took second place. The same three boys also took first place in the district 17 meet, and again Bob Gromek took a second place, but this time he was accompanied by Ed Zappa. Above: Front Row: R. How«; C. But whatever the team lacked in depth they made up for in spirit. Coach Joe Jock-etfy stated many times that this year's team was one of the most spirited teams he has ever coached. One of the reasons for all the spirit was that there were seven seniors on the team. Although these men.will be lost through graduation, the Marshall coach hopes to have a better season in 1960. One problem he will have to face is finding a replacement for Marshall's great goalie, Pete Doyle. Mr. Jocketty also expects some help from this year's sophomore squad. Above: A loose puck in front of the net is always a scoring threat. Both Denny Meyers ond the player from South realise this os they battle for control of the puck. At the state meet Lorry was rated os the best all around gymnast in the stote. Larry won more than ten medals in the city and state meets. The graduation of Lorry this yeor will be a greot loss to the teom. This was a most successful year for the gym team. The B team, after taking the city, region, district, and state championship, went on to place first in the Northwest meet. They brought back to Marshall two new trophies and a bag full of medals. These trophies, for the state and northwest championship, made a quite welcome addition to the strain on our trophy case. Prospects for next year's team look good with Bill Gleason and Ron Ecklund returning to again spark the B team to victory. The team had -a perfect win record until the last meet when they were beaten by Roosevelt. Five men sparkplugged this year's team. They were: Bob Deegan, Clark Kirkpatrick, John Lakotas, Tofn Ferree, and Daryl Lamphyr. Coach Art Chiodo was very well pleased with the team's performance and showed his appreciation by treating all the squad members to a steak dinner at the end of the year. LINK8TER8 EXPECT AVERAGE SEASON Abovo: Coach Don Sovell drives a long one during practice. This year's golf team captained by junior John Lakotas should have an average season, according to coach Don Sovell. This year's baseball team should come pretty close to winning the city title with eight seniors on the team. Many of the boys have played on the team since their sophomore year and should prove to be Invaluable to the squad this year. The Cards have good pitching, strong fielding ability, and also carry a big bat. All these factors, together with the spirit the boys possess, should prove to be a winning combination on the diamond. RACKETEERS} HAVE TOUGH SEASON All Pictures by Dennis Brody Improvement? Impossible! was the statement Mr. Joe Arnold used when he described this year's tennis squad. Because last year's team took the state championship, improvement actually is very close to impossible. All seven members of last year's squad graduated last June, therefore the members of this year's team are practically new to actual competition. Mr. Arnold expects to have a fairly good season. He said, We'll have the best dressed tennis team on the courts. Above: Joe McPherton leaps off The ground while attempting to return a baseline's volley. THINCLADS TO HAVE WELL-BALANCED TEAM This year's track team is captained by Werner Kraatz and Don Hansen. Here Tim Johnson is playing a record which will enable him to better understand his Spanish, while Laurel Woehnker writes words on the board which are given over the record player. Besides records, maps and movies are used to help the students understand the language and its background more clearly. MR. AKER. MRS. KNUTSON, MRS. TURLEY Special Classes Row li J. Carr, B. Gathering information about school activities and taking pictures of various events has been only a part of the work of the CARDINAL STAFF for the past year. Making loyouts, writing copy, composing headlines, and gathering pictures are involved in putting a page together. One page may require hours of work before the desired effect is ochieved. Encouragement, enthusiasm, and patience were a few characteristics Mr. Daniel, Advisor, and Margie Roff, Editor, supplied to help us work harder to meet those seemingly impossible deadlines. The Staff this year is composed of twenty-five senior high students who were chosen at the end of last year. Many of these members had no previous knowledge of how to put a yearbook together but it was not long before we learned how to organize our sections and planned our work so we could meet our deadlines. Through triol and some error, we reoched our goal of a bigger and, we hope, better book. We sincerely think that the scenes in this book will bring bock enjoyable memories for mony years to come. Betty Newman, in chemise coat, Jim Myhre, wearing car coat, and Warren Lerfald, in popular lettermen's jacket, are keeping warm in style. Modern styles go hand in hand with modern Marshall-ites. Linda Morris, shown in sweater and pleated skirt, and Bob Johnson, wearing corduroy pants and bulky knit sweater, show off the latest in up-to-date school wear. FASHION FAVORITES FOR 59 To be well groomed and fashionable, a person should be concerned about every part of his wardrobe. The very different black t-strap, the popular swirl, and suede button flats, add the finishing touches to student attire. For those who follow closely the fashion trends, Mary Jo McCann, in her skort and tights, shows how to be comfortable for a sporty occasion. Sports events are popular with everyone, and so are the clothes they inspire. Judy Ella, wearing slacks and jerkin, Greg Coffey shown in flannel slacks and bulky knit sweater, and Pat Patterson, in skirt and chemise blouse, know just how stylish these clothes can be. 100 TO SAY THE LEAST THEY'RE THE MOST lllh Grade 10th Grade Prettiest Girl................Gayle Kelly Sandy Stabile Handsomest Boy................Bob Riley Fronk Rierson Cutest Figure.................Janice Brisbane Marvo Trumble Best Physique.................Ted Schwab Frank Rierson Keenest Personality ..........Sharon Blockwell Sharon O'Hara Keenest Personality ..........Ranee Howe Jim Stonsfield Peppiest Girl ................Jackie lingholm Sharon O'Hara Most Athletic Boy.............Roy Christopherson Bill Gleason Typical Marshallite ..........Jackie lingholm Marlyn Swanson Typical Marshallite...........Walt Campbell Jim Stonsfield Best Alibier..................Janie McClosky Borb Hering Best Alibier..................Jerry Hess Denny Meyer Class Chatterbox .............Mary Jo Hicks Laurie Veveo Class Chatterbox .............Tom Hughes Bob Koors Best Dressed .................Deanna Prince Darlene Erickson Best Dressed .................Terry Whittaker Dick Dravis Cutest Smile .................Gayle Kelly Karen Heebl Broadest Grin.................Cush Minor Bill Torkildson Most Likely to Succeed........Phyllis Scott Julie Cooper Most Likely to Succeed .......Tim Johnson Victor Yu Most Service .................Diane Pederson Pot Clork Most Service .................Tom Johnson Orion Hegre Prettiest Hoir ...............Bonnie Delander Sharon Orr Prettiest Hoir ...............Dick Sodersfrom Lorry lindberg Prettiest Eyes ...............Bonnie Delander Sharon Orr Prettiest Eyes ...............Jim Sharp Dick Musil Most Flirtatious..............Magda Vidervol Gerri Thompson Most Flirtatious..............Joe McPherson Denny Meyers Best Dancer ..................Penny Gobel Eloyne Graves Best Dancer ..................Bob Riley Bill Gleason Friendliest ..................Sharon Blockwell Pat Clark Friendliest ..................Jerry Sorsoliel Orion Hegre Shyest .......................Joyce Johnson Alice Beck Shyest .......................Kendal Knutson Bob Koors Cutest Couple.................Deanna Prince and Gerri Thompson Walt Campbell Jim Stonsfield 9th Grade 8th Grade 7th Grade Cheryl Lupino LuAnne Baillargeon % Janet Engsfrom Tom Sochariason Melvin Hart Bob Soderstrom Cheryl Lupino l aureen Yurecko Janet Engstrom Tom Shun Melvin Hart Dennis Foley Anita Miller Sarah Cooper Marilyn Adams Jim LiaBrooten Ricky Lundeen Bob Soderstrom Joon Bjergen MoryAnn Weiger Missy Miller John Grabowski Pot Boyle Skip Mosby Karen Lundeen Sarah Cooper Missy Miller Jim LiaBrooten Lynn Gunderson Forrest Hering Sherrie Holmstrom Bonnie Graves Barbara Bordemple Horry Riley Aivors Perlbochs Dennis Foley Celia Harshmon Linda Wagner Mary Saba Wayne German Brian Busch Roy Tieden Anita Miller LuAnne Baillargeon Becky Larson Tom Sochariason Jim Cooper Lee Mesna Audrey Malmgren Arlys VanAlstine Andrea Smith Tom Shun Chuck Mondyke Tom VonDerhyde Janet Nordgren Kathy Nelson Kothy Crone Bob Edmondson Dave Peterson Kenny Miller Carol Neus Marit Smaby Kothy Crane Dave Gerdes Brian Brody Korl Sevaried Audrey Molmgren Rita Babcock Andrea Smith Rodney Hagenstod Jerry Anderson Jock Beckman Carol Neus Darcy Gustuson Joyce Christensen Rodney Hogenstad Pot Boyle Jock Beckman Kothy Alich Bonnie Graves Susan Yore Jim McCullough Tom Gooden Ken Krahn Kathy Alich Peggy House Joyce Christensen George Hill Ken Trumble Forrest Hering Koren Lundeen Rita Babcock Marilyn Adams Dove Boruth Glenn Weber Kenny Miller Bev Arent Margaret Johnston Judy Stricklin Dennis Brost Gory Rockne Bob Olson Anita Miller and Bob leverton Joy Westergard ond Ricky Lundeen Marilyn Adams and Bob Soderstrom 101 THANKS A MILLION!
