on tents DEDICATION FACULTY SENIORS SCHOOL LIFE ORGANIZATIONS ADVISORIES .... SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS ........ C arclinai 1957 ANNUAL PUBLICATION JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA We, the students of Marshall High, wish to honor Mr. Olsen, who has unselfishly given of his time and energy as adviser to the Cardinal. This year, the first in many, Mr. Olsen’s wisdom and guidance was with the Cardinal Staff only in the form of inspiration; to Mr. Olsen, we dedicate the 1957 Cardinal. 1892 A nniue rdarij 1957 The graduation of the present class from Marshall marks the 65th anniversary of the beginnings of the school. It was in 1892 that the first class graduated from the brand-new East High School, now existing in memory only as “Old East High.” With the opening of Marshall in 1924, the building was no longer used as a school; the building was torn down in August, 1951, to make way for expansion of the Crystal Super Market. Although there arc now two East Side high schools. Dr. Joseph Kane, a member of that first graduating class, considered Marshall to be the most direct dcsccndent when he returned to Minneapolis this fall and presented the school with the picture of the first class. Dr. Kane was born in 1873, finished his medical training at the University of Minnesota, and practiced medicine until his retirement in 1943. He states that since retiring he has never been lonely or bored, that he reads “sturdy books and a few paper backs and on awakening mornings his first thought is “another holiday . 3 4. For some it means the end of all formal schooling, but for others it will be the beginning of further study for a profession or a career. You have reached the first real milestone in your lives. From now on your life is in your hands—you arc the engineer. Ic be successful you need, first, a strong purpose, then the will to succeed, and finally a substantial amount of courage and faith in your own ability. With these ingredients you cannot fail. May I thank every member of the senior class for his cooperation this year. To each of you I wish the best that life has to offer. Principal Mr. Walter L. Chapman OFFICE CLERKS Mrs. Miller Mrs. Kowolin Miss Holden Mrs. George Mrs. Little Mrs. Musikov Knowledge is power. This statement is as true today as when it was first uttered. Indeed, knowledge is more essential to success than it has ever been, because living has become much more complex. To become a leader requires very exhaustive knowledge of one's work and a variety of knowledge concerning all matters bearing upon it. Leadership calls for study and knowledge of human nature. In the olden days native ability often was enough to enable a man to succeed in his own local sphere. As we know, no man can maintain successful leadership who does not possess knowledge and who docs not keep thoroughly abreast of the times in all the wide variety of developments. In other words, Knowledge is power, and can be aquired only by sincere, serious and perservering effort. Set your goal, turn your face toward it, and never under anv circumstance, turn your back to it.
