Burningham, affectionately called PJ by thousands of students, was a native of England. He came to the U. S. in 1916, coming directly to Minneapolis. Before coming to Marshall in the fall of 1925, he had taught in grade schools in the city and at Glen Lake. Through his experience there he became very interested in unfortunate boys. This became one of his objectives in life, to help these lads. Through his friendly interest in them, many Marshall lads were given the opportunity to get away from difficult situations and know that someone was vitally interested in them. PJ was an idealist and an artist. He was a strict disciplinarian and held his groups to high standards. He insisted on cooperation and admired and assisted creative ideas. He strove to instill honesty and loyalty in his students. His artistry was exemplified in his love of nature, art and literature, as well as in music. His leisure time was spent in the northern part of the state, among the pines and lakes. He built a cabin there and he loved to furnish it. He was always improving it. This was his home and he loved to be there. It was here, in this ideal spot that he loved so much, that death came on December 31, 1953. The operas, elaborate programs with their artistic stage settings and beautiful costumes will long be remembered by students. Christmas, Easter and Memorial day programs have become Marshall traditions looked forward to by students and the community. He was a loyal and sympathetic friend, an excellent teacher with great influence. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Hiawatha expresses our thoughts. 36 The denier Choir 37 £ehict Student Ccuhcit Jim Genty, president; Shirley Stemper, vice-president; Dick Johnston, recording secretary; Marlene Stabile, corresponding secretary; Doris Bixler, treasurer. Mr. Barry printed counterfeit bills and tried to improve the community by using them os legal tender. This action attracted a professional counterfeiter and a T-man. The ensuing incidents brought many a chuckle from the appreciative audience. The cast included Jim Genty, Ruth Rusek, Jo-Ellen Langguth, Loris Kronstedt, Denny Martin, Marlene Ewing, Dean Olson, Chuck Boatman, Sharron Hogan, Denny Young, Delores Carlson, Sam Clark, and Andrus Vitols. 48 There is always more to putting on a play than most people realize. The behind-the-scenes workers hove a very big part in the production. This year these workers were: Mary Smilanich, student director, Mary Cooper, properties, and Mary Kae Coffey, costumes. With the help of the stage crew and the faculty advisors, Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Socha, and Miss Skalbeck, these people worked very hard to make the play a success. 1.
