Twenty- nniversciry First Edition — On these two pages is just a peek into the student life and scenes at Marshall: the mural of Washington crossing the Delaware, the gang at work and play in the study hall, gym classes, youth center, and chemistry lab' . Keeping with this idea the editors have tried to immortalize, throughout the book, those scenes which you like to remember of Marshall in 1945 and 1946. 2 GgaAUigI MdeAtosieA, 1924.. . The spirit of East Hi h was transferred to Marshall, the first Junior-Senior high school m Minneapolis. 1928.. . The firsr graduating class which had spent four years at Marshall, received their diplomas. Freshmen in 1924-25, they helped The Cardinal through its infant days. 1930.. . Aviation came to Marshall. The Cardinal called Winged Victory. featured an introduction by Amelia Earhart. With new horizons opening, the future seemed bright to graduating Cardinalitcs. 1936.. . Mr. Harry P. Cooper was appointed principal. He capably guided Marshall through its adolescent days. 1938.. . Marshall began its four-year supremacy in basketball by winning its firsr city cage title. 1946.. . After four wartime years, The Cardinal became of age. Shouldering the problems that came with twenty-one years ot service, she looks to the future with fervent hope and optimism. Marshall High School Ou i Pnincipxii MR. HARRY P. COOPER It has been a pleasure to return and work with you this year. Your leadership and enthusiasm have made possible the return of several important school activities which had to be- put aside. You are to be congratulated on this achievement. During the war-period those who attended school were relegated to a place of less importance on account of the seriousness of the times. Yet the schools sacrificed and gave their best in the development of men for this emergency. Things have been far from normal, and it will take years of hard work to regain the stability necessary to maintain a great nation. The path ahead will be rough, more difficult than most graduating classes have had to encounter. The world is upset; however, out of the chaos plans for world peace have been set up which are yet to be tested. Only by your firm belief in the welfare of all people, and by your efforts and personal sacrifices can these ideals be achieved. Jlavuf. P. Cooper G)u i AiAiita+it ftnincifial MR. CELESTE LEEMHUIS Senior Counselor MISS ETHEL OSBERG School Nurse Mr. Chapman’s appointment as assistant principal, in the fall of 1945, was received with enthusiasm by students and faculty alike. Mr. Chapman, known as Walt' to the boys, added his new responsibilities to his regular job of turning out champion basketball teams. During the advisory periods, the students learn the procedures of the school, discuss their relation to school regulations and problems, donate to the various charitable groups, and become better acquainted with each other through this closer companionship. This year the advisories furnished the Memorial Case with fresh flowers each week. They also worked with the physical education department in sponsoring an intramural basketball tournament for all grades. All of this stimulated a more congenial relationship between the administration, the faculty, and the students. MISS SKALBECK—I2TH GRADE Row 1: M. Haagenson. N. McShano. D. Charbonneau. G. Mattson. Another ye-.tr of athletics at Marshall has passed. Although it was not highly successful in some aspects, the coaching showed both brilliance and thought. With the same top coaches and the return of one from the service, Marshall should be well on its way to regain its pre-war standing in sports. Cully Swanson, recently returned from the Navy and duty in the South Pacific, has rejoined the coaching staff and should be back in harness by next fall. Walt Chapman, well-liked basketball coach, is doing double-duty as assistant principal besides his coaching job. Cappy Jones, who is football coach and also has charge of track, is being ably assisted on the gridiron by Harold Meixner. Mr. Meixner also has charge of the B basketball team and is a popular teacher in the industrial department. The hockey season got off to a good start under Cec” O'Brien s careful management. With a good squad behind him. Dean Shawbold has done wonders for both the swimming and gym teams. Last, but not least, are two enthusiastic sports followers—our principal. Mr. Cooper, and the faculty adviser, Luke Satter, who is also the ticket sales promoter. SI We re just a group of teen-agers, bur whatever we do, we give it our best.
