'Y The 1945 Carciinal A pictorial review of Marshall published by the graduating classes of Iohn Marshall High School, Minneapolis. Minnesota. VOLUME XX ia ' -A- Portals of Knowledge Many a returning service man has paused before the case, cap in hand, to see the names of his classmates who gave the last full meas- ure of devotion, men who carried into their personal lives our motto. We notice the sign in the trophy case welcoming our service men back to Marshall. We stop to reminiscc over the many trophies won by Marshalls athletic organizations. We Laboro The doors to a school are the portals of knowledge. Knock, and the doors shall be opened unto you. As these familiar doors are opened, We catch glimpses of Marshalls front hall. Our eyes rest up- on the Words painted above the trophy case . . . the words Laboro et Servio , Labor and Serve, the motto of Marshall High School. The service flag displays the stars of blue and gold symbolic of those who left the peace and security of their high school to insure peace for future generations. The memorial case with its ever-lengthening list of gold- star names is always filled with flowers signifying the never-ending remembrance of Marshalls student body. For the Freedom of All People at Servio F or the Glory of Marshall can remember the years ot our basketball tri- umphs, when the Ekbergs, the Saloviches, and the Tews linked their names into Marshalls ath- letic chain ot events. We can also see trophies tor swimming, football, wrestling, boxing, and track. Trophies Won by the debate club, which talked its Way to tame and Won many honors in years gone by, are also on display. As We walk down the hall, We come to the door ot ll2, symbolic ot all the doors of learning. Passages of Wisdom Where We Labor and Serve Cur Mr. C. E. Blume Cardinal time suggests that another school year is nearing the end. As we turn these pages we recall again many of the year's activities and pleasant memories are stirred. Commence- ment is just around the corner and for many it will mean the parting of the ways. Life has a way of pausing but never stop- ping. New friendships, new tasks, new adventures lie just ahead. To go forward, ready and willing, determined to give our best, holding fast to those things thatiare right and just, is to prove that our days spent in high school were not wasted. We live in deeds, not years, in thoughts, not breathsp ln feelings, not in figures on a dial. We should count time by heart throbs. He most lives Who thinks most, feels the noblest, acts the best. The Cardinal team carried the red and white proudly on the gridiron, however, and though sometimes outplayed they were never out- tought. From the starting whistle to the tinal gun, Cappy's boys doggedly fought out every game. Co-Captain Stan Soyetts brilliantly de- pendable line-play earned for him the Starf Iournal player award. With an all italian backtield Cappy expects to accomplish big things next year, and he be- lieves Phil Riley and Ioe Mancino will be as good captains as Stash and l'Angus were this year. This year found the squad composed of nearly all underclass- men. Although the inexperienced cagers had a hot and cold season, they repeatedly laughed aside all prognostication and came from be- hind to prove that they had that ineffable Mar- shall fighting spirit. At mid-year Captain Iim Peterson graduate ed and Chap picked Ed Salovich to suca ceed him. Led by free-throw ace Ierry Eckberg, this years sophomores gained valuable playing experience and in the next two years should develop into a championship team such as only Walt Chapman can produce. We take this opportunity to laud the activities of one of the most unheralded men cone nected with athletics at Marshall. Mr. Satter has received little acclaim, but without his perb job of managing athletic finances, our sports program would be non-existent. Marshall High again put into the field of track competition a group of boys who will well represent their school. The spring season found Coach Tones' Cinder squad made up mostly of hard-working sophomores of no mean ability. Ekberg, Finch, Erickson, and Minichilli are among the sophomores who show promise of working into Winning form. This is mostly a build-up year as far as Cappy is concerned so next year should see Marshall cavorting to top honors, This seasons baseball team was made up of four lettermen and three veterans from American Legion ball. Typical Minneapolis weather hampered our team from rounding into shape before their first game. The mound duties are handled by two war veterans who earned letters before they en- tered the service. The future squad is favored by the players gaining experience on this summers Amer- ican Legion nine. With the sun of spring Marshall boys turn once again to the golf links, Miss Simonet, who is an expert golfer herself, plays right along with the boys and helps them to correct their weaknesses. Allen Peterson and Gus Nelson are the only two returning lettermen, Because of the war some sports have been discontinued for the duration, but an in- tensified gym program has more than replaced them. MARSHALL MENTORS Left to right: Mr. Satter, faculty manager, Mr. lones, football coach, athletic director, track, Mr. Pihlstroiri, a.:4 ststant football coach, Mr. Meixner, assistant football coach, wrestling, Mr. O'Brien, swimming and baseball, Mr Smith, assiistant basketball coach, swimming, Mr. Chapman, basketball coach. BLUE TRI Mrs. Iohnson of the Y,W.C.A., Elaine Locken, and Miss Mellem, faculty advisor, aided the Blue Tri Club in its endeavor to supply service and entertainment for the eleventh and twelfth grade girls. One of the service projects was making nut cups for the Veterans' Hos- pital to brighten the trays of the shut-ins on the holidays. Entertainment was provided for the girls by a clever cartoonist, a 'Bomance inc. speaker, a horseback riding party and other equally amusing programs. The second annual Shamrock Shag was even more successful than the first, and left the school looking forward to hearing more of the Blue Tri next year. SILVER TRI Silver Tri is another club under the direction of the Y.W.C.A. The activities for girls from ninth and tenth grades are similar to those of Blue Tri. SETON HY Another club exclusively for the girls is Seton l-fy, which includes girls from ninth to the twelfth grade. The past year has found the members bowling, horseback riding, and roast- ing weiners over a campfire. The all-city Christmas party was also very popular. This year we're starting something new: The Car- dinal is coming out on the first day of school. The editors want to stop here and thank the members of the staff who published this Cardinal in a year when there wasn't any paper, film, flashbulbs, and when dead- lines were so early fGeorge Minarik paid me fifty cents to mention he was general handy manly Rod Newburg of the studio of the same name who put up with the staff asking for pictures on two minutes' notice, Mr. Segal of the Bureau of Engrav- ing and Mr. Franz of Harrison and Smith who published this book even after the deadlines, all the teachers who let the staff graduate even though they didn't go to class all semesterg and to Mr. Olsen who put up with the crazy antics of the staff. Anyone interested in doing his good deed for the day is invited to come visit the staff in their special wing at St. Peter after Iune 14.
