UUUPER, PRIHCIPHL Mr. Cooper, principal, educator, and Hregular fellow has as interesting a personal hacltgrouncl as is his teaching experience. Although he studied to he an architect, he like many others, changed his vocational course to education. His travels include Canada, Mexico and much of the United States. Like others who want to amuse themselves during their spare time, he has a hohhy- water color painting. Equally enjoyable are fishing trips, traveling, and driving. As far as appreciating the aesthetic is concerned he lists classical music as first. Included in his favorites are W1'lliar22 Tell Ozfertzzre, 1812 Oufrlzzre, P1AlgI'fl7I,.f Cfzorus, and Home to Om' Nlozfnlainf from If T1'o1fato1'c'. One of the few peeves that Mr. Cooper has is getting started at things too late. ltls with a Jhiloso whical note that he sa 's his amhition in life is uto en'ov livinvf' l l l l , ci ELDUN LU. FHHSUH, HSSISTHHT PRIHCIPHL Nlarshall students are fortunate indeed in having 'ghldyi' as assisiant to Mr. Cooper. The two collahorate to give Marshall an eliicient and progressive educational program. In liact Mr. Mason's name is synonymous with progressive educational tendencies. His in- auguration of the Midfwest Studies Group, which he terms as his favorite pastime, eer- tainly attests to that. His wide scope of interests include foothall and golf in the sports field, reading, and traveling. He has traveled and studied in England. He was graduated from North High School and the University of Minnesota, hei ng active in sports in hoth schools. His lilies include his inseparahle pipe, young people, and his family. Being a tenor of no little ability, he takes special delight in singing. I English PINNEY, MRS. ELLA Iinpllish J4, Story J-1, Dnzma JZ BIORKLUND, MRS. This was due to the return of several outstanding lettermen. After having many practice matches with St. Louis Park and Robhinsdale, we were hosts to a Metropolitan meet in which many schools from the Twin Cities participated. Marshall was the victor in this meet with Frank DeLuc, Frank Zay- check, Sam Cecere, lim Van Gordon, and Iohn O'Neill winning first place in their respective weights. The next large meet was the state in which Frank Zaycheck, lim Van Gordon, Frank DeLuc and Sam Cecere were crowned state champs. These four boys were largely responsible for Marshallis retaining the state title. Sammy County Cecere, 135 lhs., ended a very successful high school career as a wrestler hy winning the city and state championship in two years competition. Frank Spaghetti,' DeLuc, 145 lbs., won the state championship for two years. Frank Cowboy Zaycheck, 125 lbs., competed for the First time in wrestling this year. He pinned all his men in both city and state championship. Skating Marshall was fortunate in having a good skating team this year due to the fact that Coach Lien had a lot of championship material with which to work. Several ofthe boys, including Roger Mosiman, holder of two world and national titles in the juvenile classg Earl Mosiman, holder of several national and city titles in the intermediate division, and Gene Danielson were out of the city, competing in national competition, when the high school and invitation meets were in progress. But that made no difference to Lien when he could fall back on such good skaters as Stan Merrick, Dean Salisbury, lack Swanson, and the Burris boys, Burt and Brownie. These boys ran away with the city and state titles and then won the Invitation Medley Relay at the St. Paul Ice Carnival. Next year all the boys will be hack at least for one semester and several for the whole year. Coach Lien is expecting a good season with all the material that he has. Tennis The outlook for the tennis team this year is bright with Bill South, Howard Wilcox, and Ed Posthumus the returning veterans. The boys had an intra-team tournament, and it was decided that Howard Wilcox and Bill South were to be the number I and 2 singles players, Rodney Nelson and Ed Posthumus were the number 1 doubles players with George Ank and Bill Herring forming the number 2 doubles team. Golf Cecil O'Brien took over the golf duties this year and found himself with many returning veterans, He immediately worked out a system to determine his best golfers by which he had persons with about the same ability challenge each other. The more matches they won the higher up the ladder they would go. It was finally decided that Gene Danielson, Stanley VVronski, George W'ronski, Russ Shultz, Frank Uram, Roger Shore, and Ray Corbett should comprise the varsity for the first city high school match with Washburn at Armour Golf Course. Graphic Arts Engraving Co. 5OI Seventh Avenue So. Minneapolis Minnesota To Err Is Human --I-Ion. Iulian Oscar Sletten I have crossed my Rubicon, and, glancing backward, reviewing the nightmarish happenings of the last two weeks, I now feel a sense of peace, which diflicult to tell, and yet, more dili'-icult to keep just to myself, I feel that this be the best method in which to unload my heavy burden. Two weeks ago, while teaching one of my classes, I noticed one of the boys, I shall call him Martin for convenience, reading a newspaper while he was supposed to be working at his case prob- lems. Now ordinarily, I would have overlooked this, but, having had a very wearisome session down at the Republican headquarters the night before, I told Martin to report to Mr. Mason with me after school. Martin, however, told me he had a tennis match on that night and would some other time do just as well, all the time, looking at me with his straight-forward, honest, blue eyes. Having been tennis coach myself once, I realized how important these matches were, and so I excused him until the following Monday. But going home that night in my Ford, I began to wonder if I had done just right. Oflcourse, boys being boys, I hadn't interfered when some of them had perhaps been a trifle rowdy, and now, I realized that I had been perhaps a trifle too hasty with Martin. That evening, I didn't feel very hungry, and all that horrible night, I rolled and tossed in my bed, unable to get a wink of sleep, although I had consumed my usual Ovaltine. It came to a show-down the next evening, when my good wife and helpmate asked me what on earth made me look so haggard and careworn. I finally broke down and told her about the entire ghastly episode, and she, being frank, helped me, I'm sure, more than any- one else could have. And yet, that evening, I couldn't get to sleep either, because I knew that Martin was probably worrying as much as I was. The next Mon- day, I saw Martin come staggering in, take his seat, and very diligently begin working his Commercial Law problems. I saw the lines of worry on his brow, and I cursed myself for having inflicted the mental torture upon him that I must have. But as the days passed, and Martin saw that I wasn't going to send him to the detention room, the worried look gradually disappeared from his face, and, in a few days, he was the same care-free youth I had known before the awful catastrophe. I have learned my lesson, and bless my G. O. P. button, I intend to remember itl Editork note: We are indebted to Roger Gaarder for jfnding this on Mr. Sletlenff desk and forufura'z'ng it to the Cardinal Stag. In my presence have been enacted scenes of comedy and tragedy-heartbreak and romance. I have been an innocent party to lovcrs' secrets. I have been roughly carved and drawn upon. Shapcly legs have carrcsscd my own: rough heels have kicked at mc. Love letters have been written on me. People have fought over mc. Weary students have slept upon me. Poetry has been written on me. I have witnessed the confusion and bickcrings of senior meetings. I have seen the fashion change with the seasons- from German haircuts and beer jackets to plaid wool shirts. I have shuddered under the impact of crascrs and have cringcd at the cries of the wounded and thc cheer- ing of a delirious audience. People of all kinds have sat on me-from the bc- wildered ninth grader to thc mighty senior and the astute faculty member. I am aging fast: my days arc numbered. In time I will ccdc my place to another, one more firm, more modern than I. Eventually I will be shattered, thrown out and com- aletcl for ottcn. I have stood too lone in room 2 . I Y S is 3 I am a study room desk. SEHIUR llIRElIlURY...lUlIE - SEIIIUH llIRElIlllRY...lUllE Mankato, Minn.: Inner Circle 4: Blue Triangle 4.
