A view from the Hill. Most every student sees some thing different. There are so many perspectives of life on the Hill. Each is unique and important in the body of the college. Many times, good friends and good times produce an exciting and fun-filled view of college life. However, we do have to view the everyday struggles. Often our perspective of life is challenged by U s C0wPfec friends and faculty. What should I do? What should I believe? Who can I trust? Our perspectives are often clouded and constantly changing. On the other hand, some perspectives never give in to change. The over-all view of all the struggles and the good times helps to build us up as a community and as individuals to prepare us for the lives we will live in the future. It's always a comfort to have friends as Donna Burkett and Charlie Edwards to lean on. The weather cooperated nicely with plenty of sunshine and warm temperature, and the display of autumn colors was still lavish. Students worked long and hard during the week before Homecoming to prepare signs, build floats for the parade, help beautify the campus, and prepare for the numerous activities that were a part of the day's enjoyment. Planned and coordinated by the Alumni Office, Homecoming began on Friday night of the last weekend in October with the opening of the official registration desk for alumni and other visitors and a delightful performance by music and theatre students, including the Jazz Band. The production, f'The 19405 Radio Show, drew a full house. There was also a Halloween Costume dance that night in McConnell. But the real celebration began Saturday morning, when alumni, parents, and other visitors by the hundreds arrived on campus. Reunions were held for classes from 5, IO, 15, etc. years agog and the college saluted two former students as 'fAlumni of the Year. The Homecoming parade was enjoyable as were the pre- game and halftime performances at the stadium. After the game a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new college chapel. Later there was a program of country and western music in the auditorium featuring Gamble Rodgers, George Hamilton IV and other figures from the Grand Old Opry plus the Bailey Mountain Cloggers, the college's own award-winning dance team. The Homecoming Dance featured 'KTop Secret, a 5-member band which played Top 40 music. All in all, it was an enjoyable weekend of celebration. Top Cat dressed to impress, and both the clog- gers and the marching band gave super perfor- mances. Homecoming Queen Elaine Ensley got a kiss from the Prez, but King Charlie Edwards pre- ferred to stay with the football team. Businessman Bruce Ellen of Augusta, GA, and Ruby Hooper of Raleigh, one of the top administrators in Gov. -lim lVlartin's office, received bronze medallions as Alumni of the Year. After carrying boxes and boxes of stuff from car to room, we stand in line and wait and wait and wait. Registration isn't really all that bad. We are happily reunited and have plenty of summer experiences to discuss with our friends while we wait in line. The first line consists of getting our class schedules. The 3-8 final record doesn't begin to tell the real story of a team blessed with hard-working, talented, proud players and dedicated coaches. Coach Patton's team started with a SI-IO victory over Guilford. They were nipped by Catawba, 23-zo, but then came back to post consecutive shutouts over Georgia Southwestern and Newberry. Sporting a 3-1 record at that point and ranked among the top teams in NAIA Division 1, the Lions were optimistic. But then something happened, and they lost seven straight games to Western Carolina, Carson- Newman, Presbyterian, Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne, Gardner-Webb fthe eventual conference champj, and Elon. There were exciting plays and American and SAC-8 Defensive Player of the Year in '86, headed a strong Lion linebacker corps, which also included Rodney Borders, Charlie Edwards, Mark Mennitt and john Weeks. Randy Whitson again was one of the best punters in the conference, and Tony Gibson proved he could boot extra points and field goals with the best. His 46-yard field goal on the last play of the game gave the Lions a 3-o win over Newberry. Mike Sims, Reggie Taylor, Daryl Evans and Jerry Barnes shouldered most of the load in the running attack, while quarterbacks Wayne Scott and Gary Lackey divided the passing duties. Receivers Walter Hawes, joey Bivins, Richard Ouzts, Tim Burnett and Grover llill made some spectacular catches. Lance Roland contributed too, although out most of the season with a strong unit headed by Buck Gatton, Pete Mansell, Kelly Walker, Tony Little and Tracy Barnes. Solid hitting and dogged play in both the defensive and offensive lines came from Clarence Bryce, Fred Davis, Terry Casey, Bryan Fancher, Aaron Gilmore, Jesse Williams, Keith Ledford, Darrell Dawkins, Scott Houser, Tracy Ponder, Jeff Williams, and Joe Zichichi. The Homecoming game produced a school record in one exciting play. Facing fourth and long on their own 1- yard line, the Lions sent Whitson into punt formation, standing just inside the end line of the end zone. Instead of kicking, though, he lofted a pass over the on-rushing defenders. Freshman Eric Peeler gathered it in and sped up the sideline 99 yards for a touchdown, the longest scoring pass in Mars Hill gridiron history. memorable performances by members fm elbow lnlUfY' of the '87 team. They came together as a team and learned to play the style of ball Coach Riggins preferred. Unfortunately, four of the lcey players - jon Hancock, Tony Davison, Tom Beelcer, and Shel- wyn Klutz - finished out their college Solid Basketball careers. leaving a big hole in Riggins' line-up for '88-89. Davison was one of the team's three leading scorers along with Darell Crock- er and Jensen. He was also the team's top assist leader. ln fact, he is lVlars Hill's all- time record holder in assists. Davison and Hancock joined the ex- clusive 1,ooo-points-plus club at Mars Hill, going over the 1,ooo-point marlc for their careers. Hancock became the 13th Lion player to reach the magic marlc and Davison, the 14th. Top teams in NAIA District 26 dur- ing the 1987-88 season were Elon, High Point, Belmont Abbey, and Gardner- Webb. The Lions didn't rank well against those teams, but they ranked high with the noisy fans in Chambers Gym.
