It is our memories that are the basis of our knowledge and growth. By re- flecting on our past we keep in per- spective our present and plan for our future. The 1986-87 academic year was no 2 exception. Through trial and error, each of us grew by expanding our minds and feelings, filling our days with memories, both pleasant and painful. Everyone had their mo- ment of glory and defeatg but no matter what the outcome, we ma- tured from the experience. Profes- sors, friends, and family all be- came part of our personal accounts. In years to come we will all remember the times that we had at Mars Hill College. if! 4' NN 'f 47- K, .1 Q v I . ,- 1..', C' ..' , , , ' P'-' n-.,I hm-f,Q. w vf' ' - Q, gf gf Q ,f .- ' 4' xii '- ' ' 31. I never knew that moving to school was such a big job. Loading the stuff, unloading the stuff, car- rying the stuff up the stairs and putting it in a cubicle smaller than the size of my bathroom at home. How was I supposed to make all that fit? That was just the begin- ning. Orientation started the following day with classes looming in the near future. Would I get lost? What classes would I take? Would I make new friends? Could I stand to live with my roommate? Ah, the questions of the first year of col- lege. As soon as I had these questions conquered, even more questions popped out of the blue to replace them. What would I major in? Which sorority should I join? What kind of friends should I asso- ciate with and-most important- who should I date? For many campus residents Parents' Day was the first opportunity for students to see their familys. A last minute check assures Linda Plants that she has everything for the first day of class. 6 Once the year got started, I began to answer my questions and I be- gan to fit into the college scene. I did not get lost and I chose the ap- propriate classes. I made good friends and my roommate drove me up the wall. The major was cho- sen, the sororities looked at and the groups of friends were established. Ch, also, most importantly the guy was c o . - h Sen -Barbie Turner r. Ah, the ever familiar line repeated by every student on campus over the years! No matter what the day was or the hour of that day, one was always able to find something to do. During the early part of the day, one could walk through the Wren College Union and see people sleeping on the furniture while others sat about do- ing homework or catching up on the latest gossip. On the lower floor of the union, people excitedly opened their mail, if they were lucky enough to receive any at all, and hurried about on their way to class. The game room was constantly noisy as people tested their skills against machine and each other. At night time, there was a variety of activities! The most popular one was looking for food! Many trips were made to Denny's for a midnight meal and to Texaco for a snack. As the day drew to a close, we ventured back to our rooms to dream of tomorrow. ampus ife 4 Q xl is--, .-.fn5...., o a 77'i'L- 1 1-11: ,A 74 I -v' 1, ' .ik -QQ . 'sf:--..XiNs1i-51243: -: ,, lubs and organizations played a dominant role in campus life. There was an organization for any desire, ranging from dancing to Christian services, and from music to cheerleading. As the fraternities and sororities swung into action, the cam- pus was livened up by some of the unusual demands placed upon the pledges. The Christian organizations enlightened students' souls by shar- ing the love of Christ to them and to the community through special speakers brought into the school and through the outreach programs. The musical society entertained us through concerts and special shows presented throughout the year. The journalistic staff kept us informed on the latest events happening both on and off campus. The academic clubs brought a refreshing way of learning to the student body, while the Inter- national Club brought the world to Mars Hill. Student Government Association he Student Government Association was the repre- sentative body of our campus community. It served a variety of functions that gave the students of Mars Hill the capacity for self-government. Though not able to meet the needs of every student, a majority of students felt that the rules and regulations of this institution were fair and proper. Through our Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches, SGA saw to it that every opportunity was avail- able to satisfy the wants and desires of the student body. SGA served its purpose more than adequately involving the student as an integral part of campus government. Through all of our efforts, we made Mars Hill College a college we were proud to attend. In the years ahead we can look back approvingly at Mars Hill College as an institute where the students made the college and not where the college made the students. The Greek orga- nizations at Mars Hill are unique from the typical image attributed to most fraternities and sororities. The 1986-87 school year included many activities which helped renew an emphasis on service and social activities. The Jump Rope-a-Thon for the National Heart Fund, the can drive for Neighbors in Need, and the Greek Ball showed the commitment ofthe Inter-Greek Council to serve the col- I lege and community. Midway through the season the Lady Lions Basketball Team had compiled an 8-4 record, being undefeated at home with a 5-0 record. The leading scorers-Andrea German, Lee Ann Enix, and Mary Busker-were su- ported by the rest of the team in the victorious struggle for dominance in the district. The team had a new head coach, Janet Cone, and expected a lot out of her. She lived up to the chal- lenge and constructed a winning team even though she lost three lettermen. The six lettermen returning, along with the five walkons, worked hard to reach their goals and to grab a hold of the stars. Way to go, ladies! Hill Women's Enix, Andrea Brown, Ann Dayton. It was a wonder- ful feeling to be able to walk across campus and see a smile or hear a Whazup from practically every- one seen. The teachers and other staff members made students feel special by remembering the name and by being able to recognize them. Yet, the people who were not visible also helped to make Mars Hill a beautiful place to learn. There were janitors who kept the rooms and halls clean in the dorms. The people who worked in the kitchen were constant- ly busy preparing the food so that everyone could have a hot, balanced meal. The administrative staff kept the business affairs and other mat- ters going so that the school could have a smooth flowing process. When visitors came to The Hillf' they no- ticed the warmth and love that all of the campus shared. We were caught up in the action on our own campus, yet we were keenly aware ofthe high drama being acted out in the larger arena of life. Half a world away, in the Philippines, a courageous woman, Corazon Aquino frightj, was struggling to help her people overcome the legacy of the corrupt 20-year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos ffar rightj and recapture the joys of liberty and self-determination. The struggle was bur- dened by political and economic turmoil. In Britian a 920-year old monarchy mus- tered its pomp and glory for the spectacle of f' ,X -5 a royal wedding. Prince Andrew, second son of Queen Elizabeth and fourth in line to the throne, married red-haired English commoner Sarah Ferguson. A new fad, a new form of recreational drug fbelowJ, was sweeping the United States. On the East Coast it was called crack, but on the West Coast it was known as rock. Whatever its name, this refined, smokable, cheaper form of cocaine was proving to be the most addictive narcotic ever sold on the streets of our nation. 3. as 5.71. X 1 1 , 1. 'i' A P, W ,I di Perspective Terrorism continued to spread as an ugly reality around the world. Responding to what he called the monstrous brutality of Libyan-based terrorism in Europe and throughout the Mediterranean area, Presi- dent Reagan ordered a retaliatory raid. Air Force and Navy jets struck five targets in- side Libya. Among them was the Libyan Naval Academy tabovel, located in a sub- urb of Tripoli. Farther south in Africa a different form of deadliness manifested itself. Deep under Lake Nios in Cameroon, the earth belchedg a bubble of scalding gas rose to the surface and was wind carried across the land. With- in minutes, 1700 people were dead, burned by the steam and choked by carbon dioxide. Among the non-human casualties was a herd of cows lleftl. Among celebrities who died during the year were singer Kate Smith lfar leftj, 79, best known for her World War II renditions of God Bless Americaf' bandleader Benny Goodman icenterl, known as the King of Swingf' and actor Ted Knight, 62, who had starred in the Mary Tyler Moore Show and other television series. tWide World Photosl 181 Drought The lingering effects ofthe worst dry spell on record, which spread throughout the Southeast during the summer of 1986, could still be seen far into autumn. During the peak of that rainless season, corn frightl and other crops wilted from south- ern Pennsylvania all the way to northern Florida. Even after some late summer rains, many tobacco farmers throughout the Carolinas lost their entire crop and were on the brink of economic ruin. In Hyannis Port, MA, Caroline Kennedy, who captured the nation's heart as a little girl romping through the White House in the early 1960's, when her father was president, married Edwin Schlossberg, a New York businessman and artist. L'Miss Tennessee, Kellye Cash fbelow rightl, grandniece of country music star Johnny Cash, was crowned Miss America of l987. The crown was bestowed by the outgoing Miss America, Susan Akin. Libert The city of New York gave the Statue of Liberty a big birthday bash on the Fourth of July, and the nation joined the celebra- tion via television. A glorious festival of song, celebrities, and fireworks lit the har- bor and stirred our patriotism as we hon- ored the newly restored symbol of our free- dom onthe great lady's 100th anniversary, Meanwhile, the seeds of hatred and bigotry sprouted into another tragic episode of ter- rorism in the Middle East, Two Arab gun- men stormed the main Jewish synagogue in Istanbul, killing 20 worshipers with sub- machinegun fire. When Turkish police are rived, the terrorists detonated hand gre- nades and killed themselves. Afterward, the sanctuary was a gory scene tbelowl. tWide World Photosl '19,- 'ifwq '-r Y l8'S ummit New hope for world peace was raised when Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev Qleft abovej and President Reagan met in Reyk- javik, Iceland, for a two-day summit. They discussed the possibility of reducing nucle- ar weapons in Europe and elsewhere but reached an impasse over the testing of the United States' so-called Star Wars weaponry system. Fans of professional sports had plenty to cheer about during the fall with exciting action in the National Football League and in baseball's World Series. San Fransciso Forty-Niner Quarterback Joe Montana Qleft belowl injured his spine in the first game of the 1986 FNL season, underwent disc surgery, and returned to action within two months. The New York Mets took the World Series from the Boston Redsox with an 8-5 victory in the seventh game. Catcher Gary Carter was so elated he jumped into the arms of pitcher Jesse Orosco. 184 Jf' Q9 0 .il- qc:, 4'...-.....,Q,..-:-'ii if A -ncgiii A ' Q Q r- ., - ' .'i'Y-'-'- ivlgxjaf .11 Lp 32-.JJ 3-HD ff- L ' -. 2 1 g il. ., ., - i M 1 '..5,x,t .su , T ..: -'.f 'l -N c , ,. t .,fs'1,,..:,.'--.'f ,1pcff..,,-V . , V-V, lo,-.'. Politics Americans continued to be taken or held hostage throughout the world. One was journalist Nicholas Daniloff tabove leftj, who was arrested in Moscow and accused of spying. l-le was later exchanged for a Soviet UN employee whom the U.S. had charged with spying. Similarly ransomed by the United States was David Jacobsen, who had been held hostage in Iran. In a surprising off-year election the Demo- crats re-captured the Senate and made sub- stantial gains in the House. One ofthe win- ners who helped them regain the Senate was former North Carolina governor and Duke University president Terry Sanford tleftl, who defeated long-time Republican Congressman James Broyhill, who had been appointed to the Senate earlier in the year following the suicide of Sen. John East, Despite being faced with Democratic con- trol of Congress for the two remaining years of their administration, President Reagan and Vice President George Bush tabovej continued to display their usual en- thusiasm and optimism. lWide World Photos! 185 ,-w J .11 -nv., 7 '-H' 1' . During this time I have fulfilled re- sponsibilities to myself and my school. This semester the book has been my number one priority. By putting the book first, many friend- ships were tested. I now know that I have friends who will stand by me. It was through this experience that they carried me. I want them to know how much their support was appreciated and that I carry them when they need me. aff lima... I . . . o Special Thanks To My -D.J. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me. The Lord replied, My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints in the sand it was then that I carried you. -Author U U 'J 0 U. 3 Q 2 3 3 ' 5 Q t 0 9 ' . o Q 0 5 2 O 1 S 0 --Q 0 nknown 1 N W 5 W- I ., -- 31311111-l l i gh.
