Mars Hill Soars To New Heights In 1985 estled in the foothills of South-' lm. -- ern Appalachia stands an in- stitution that affords sutdents var- ied opportunities for success on a college campus. Mars Hill College, founded in 1856, is set in the tradi- tion that the environment of each student directly affects the educa- tional goals of that student. This is why Mars Hill strives to promote a sense of family, community, friend- ship, and excitement in all that the college community endeavors to do 1985 was an excellent year for this goal because Mars Hill truly rose to new heights in excellence. ,. . --V' . 1 1 . 1 4. 49-adm ' ' - - - . , PX ,, ...N , f 'pr-.. As a small private institution, Mars Hill is able to provide each student with the academic supervision and attention for the best possible education. A renewed dedication to the school and its purpose was felt by the students in 1985. Lion spirit ran high within the college community. Students took on a new sense of pride in their school and in the col- lege family. Perhaps the biggest dif- ference was the appreciation of the simple elegance of this place. This year, however, was contagious to happy faces on campus. Students seemed to be more content with life on the Hill than ever before. That is not hard to figure out, though. The spirit of friendship enrolled here the very first day and has been a welcome presence since. Students have a new sense of pride in the place they call home 8 months a year. Sports events are better represented with a new en- thusiasm. Students also see Mars Hill as not only an institution of learning, but as an institution of so- cialization. While learning about specific subjects, students learn about themselves and others around them. The 1985 school year found stu- dents more willing than ever to de- velop and improve the atmosphere at Mars Hill College. College atti- tudes and objectivity were at an all- time high in 1985. You will find that the most memorable times are those spent, not in class, but just sitting around having fun. f-ffl! ooking back over 84- 85, you remember those midnight runs to Denny's, pantiraids, ping- pong matches in the game room, snowball fights in front of the cafeteria, sit- ting in the dorm lobbies or the Union watching TV, or just sitting around talk- ing until two in the morn- ing. Mr. Luns- ford, a native of Mars Hill, devoted his life to the preservation of mountain traditions in a time when these values were ridiculed and in danger of being lost. The Lunsford Festival honors his memory and rekindles the tradition of music, dance and home crafts. On the first weekend in October, the campus becomes alive with the music of mountain bands, the clogging of area dance teams, and the demon- strations of traditional crafts and home arts. Through this festival, the college and the community acknowledges and celebrates the culture that yet remains a vital part of our common heritage. -Dr. Don Anderson BELOW Local craftsman display their crafts. Christmas festivi- ties in '84 were no exception. Most students participated in Christmas caroling and tree decorating in their own dorms. The College Union hosted the annual Christmas party. Students and faculty members munched out at the buffet in the Timberline, talked to Santa Claus, and listened as Dr. Page Lee pre- sented the Christmas story. Even Mother Nature got in on the act. The next morning CThursdayJ Mars Hill received the first snow of the year. The annual Christmas Dance was held on Friday night. How about who has the final word on every- thing? Ask President Fred Bentley. He's the tall gentle- man who always has a smile on his face and a pipe in his mouth. As president, he tries to raise funds to keep our school in business and keeps this school moving smoothly. He is also ready to talk to students about their problems and see if he can help. Are you having difficulties with a professor, or a par- ticular class? Have any other academic enigmas that can not be solved? Perhaps Dean Hoffman is the man who can answer your questions. He, like Dr. Bentley, can frequent- ly be seen wandering around campus getting to know the students, and he makes sure that everything in the aca- demic areas is running smoothly. Do you have a problem with some students or your studies? Then you should visit the office headed by Dr. Michael O'Brien, the Student Development office. Here you can clear up any problems with housing, receive pri- vate counseling for any problem, and become involved in student activities. Secretaries know how to get in touch with professors you cannot find. They can direct you to the person you need to see. Without secretaries the school would be in utter chaos. The secretaries take a huge work burden away from the faculty and the admin- istration officers to help the college run smoothly. But the best thing about secretaries is that they can always be found during normal working hours. 38fAdministration , ' . . At one time or another, and probably more fre- quently than that, you will have to pay a visit to the Memorial Library and the Infirmary. But beware, there are tales of students who enter these realms, and do not return for long periods of time. When they do return, they are not the same. The student who ventures in these realms finds many people there to help him survive his visit. They are willing to help, the student need only to ask. The year got off to a big start with pledge season that welcomed a number of prospective new members. With Delta Phi Zeta pledges dressed as mice and Alpha Phi Omega dressed as anything and everything, some students didn't quite know what to think of the various sorori- ties and fraternities. But once pledge season was over and new members inducted, things started rolling and the outcome was great! Lambda Chi Omega MATH CLUB BUSINESS HONOR CLUB l 04fOrganizations repainted the Mars Hill College sign on main street and did various other service projects including cleaning the fountain in front of Blackwell Hall. Be- sides benefitting the school through service projects, some sororities and fraternities sponsored dances and provided other social activities. Overall, the Greek organizations have contributed greatly to the student life at Mars Hill College by providing social interac- tion and service to the college. -Christi Reed i r EQ ,Q 60? Christian Organizations While sororities and fraternities give students social opportunities, Christian Student Movement and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes afford students the chance for fun and fellowship in a Christian environ- ment. C.S.M. brought in speakers from such op- pressed countries as Nicaragua, Guatemala, and oth- er Central American countries, This gave students the opportunity to hear about political and religious activities in other countries where life styles are radi- cally different from that of the United States. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes brought in speakers from the college, such as football coaches, as well as speakers from other areas around Ashe- ville. This year's attendance reached an all-time high of almost 300 at a single meeting! Needless to say, students are getting involved in Christian activities at Mars Hill College. eChristi Reed Organizationsf 109 BAILEY MTN l + - .7'S' FY-4' ,A .FL ., , It ' 'Q 11 I J '21- lt xl, Q PHI Lg, Ml! It was obvious that the cheerleaders had been practicing for several months before they began entertaining the crowds at Meares Stadium. They had been rewarded for their hard work and diligent practice at summer camp with sev- eral blue ribbons. The cheerleaders weren't the only ones supporting athletics at Mars Hill. Golden Pride sold programs at games, seated the fans, and gave ll2fOrganizations enthusiastic encouragement to athletes in all sports. The Wren College Union Board sponsored many ac- tivities to keep Mars Hill students entertained, bring- ing well-known and enjoyable entertainers such as the Vienna Choir Boys to the campus. Because Mars Hill is a small college in a small town, the Union Board kept students informed about events in Ashe- ville in addition to promoting on-campus entertain- ment. -Christi Reed 1 f Q V I, X f' :Q X X-,..:nQNf4 ' . g 1' L2'f.',', , Y 1. -. 1 .mr .wi SCRIB CLUB CUMPUTER SCIENCE CLUB COLLEGE REPUBLICANS X DELTA PHI ZETA l DELTA PHI ZETA BK? The Music Department got off to a grand start this year through the impressive job done by the marching band. under the direction of Ray Babelay, at football games. That standard of excellence was continued as the College Choir. directed by Bill Thomas, presented a pops concert. A Night on Broadway. The well-attended performance was giv- en to help raise money for the choir's trip to Europe during the summer of 1985. The Music Department offers its students opportunities to express the full range of their musical talents. That Mars Hill is a Christian college is clearly reflected in its music pro- gram. The choir's rendition of Walk Him Up, fea- turing the thrilling and powerful voice of Alfreda Gerald, was a highlight of the fall pops concert. Christian values could be seen in the selection of tunes which the band chose to play at the final foot- ball game ofthe season. The song We Are the Rea- son. by David Meece. reflects traditional Mars Hill goals and values. The reputation of Mars Hill Col- lege for having an outstanding Music Department definitely showed in 1984-85fin the performances ofthe choir, the band, other musical ensembles and in individual performances. fChristi Reed - - gash-H NEW BEGINNING SINGERS LOGOTHIA i Organizations! l 17 COMMUN I - CATION S MEDIA BOARD S.G.A. We are no longer the impressionable freshmen who came to Mars Hill in August 1981. We have grown, molded by the friends we made and the times we had at the Hill, We laughed through the good times and cried through the bad. We made new friends and sadly lost others. Do you remember . . . mohawks, Hoof, Gibson, homecomings, MHCXUNCA basketball games, '6That's Incredible, J-term, dedication of the Media Center, and the cliffs? All graduates will carry with them their own special memories, but one thing no graduates will ever lose is their pride at being a Lion, l 48 f Seniors w ' Aw,I W , ,, . --'- aww.. 1, W -- ,Li 1 ,x 1 1' 3 F' V-'N -f' ' 'll' . To help us all keep a balanced perspective of this wonderful era we offer this assortment of photographs assem- bled by the Associated Press. We think you will agree that it includes some unforgettable moments in 1984. President Reagan won re-election with the biggest electoral vote in the nation's history in the November 1984 election. He took 49 states with 59 per cent of the total vote. Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale made history when he chose a wom- an, Geraldine Ferraro. as his vice presidential running mate. Vanessa Williams, the first black ever chosen as Miss America, was forced to give up her title at the request of pageant officials after it was revealed that she had posed nude for sex- ually explicit photos. Her successor, Suzette Charles, crowned Miss America of 1985, Sharlene Wells. The Statue of Liberty marked her 98th birth- day in 1984, showing definite signs of her age. A two-year restoration to get the grand lady ready for her centennial was begun in July. Walter Payton, great running back for the Chicago Bears, became the all-time leading rusher in the history of professional football. Robert Duvall and Shirley MacLaine won Os- cars for their performances in Tender Mer- cies and Terms of Endearmentf' Michael Jackson conducted his so-called Vic- tory tour with performances in more than a dozen cities across the nation. The 1984 World Series saw the Detroit Tigers beat the San Diego Padres four games to one. 188fClosing V. 'L H X I . ,Lil J ,ll iakw . When Angela and I began this collectiongof memories we decided to give it our all-and we did. I guess that's what makes this book so special to us, and we hope, to all of you. The best part is yet to come, however. The yearbook staff, for the first time ever, is compiling a spring supplement cov- ering January to May of 1985. This will be dis- tributed in the F all Semester of 1985. Iid like to say thank you to Angie most of all. Without her I never could have done it. Enjoy the book now and hopefully in years to come. Robin Mathis 1 1 I z E 5 1 I , A The experiences I have had and the new friends I have made during the past year as co-editor of the Laurel have been invaluable. In addition to the dedicated staff and photographers who have weathered out all the storms, I would like to thank the following people for their contribu- tions to the 85 Laurel: John Campbell, David Wachter, John Barton, Owen Roberts, Hugh Morton, Smith Goodrum, Paula Roberts, Patti Levi for the SART photographs, Sandra Smith for her invaluable help, and a special thanks to Walter Smith for all his advice, assistance and patience.
