Miss Snelson, assistant to the president of Mars Hill, was a member of the class of 1937. Dr. Cooper, a member of the Class of 1952. served as pastor of Baptist churches in Whiteville and Morehead City. In 1966. he was appointed as the Director of the Department of Cooperative Ministries with the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. 'S im Life at Mars Hillfl 13 M.H.C. A win over Lenoir Rhyne at home and losses to Georgia South- ern and Elon on the road closed out the 1983 season for the Lions and left them with a 4-6-1 record and a fifth place finish C3-3-ll in the 8- team South Atlantic Conference, in which they had been picked in pre-season to finish last. The final tally was a far cry from the 1-10 record of 1982 and consid- erably better than most fans had expected from a team under a new coach and in the initial season of a drastic rebuilding program. It was a little disappointing, however, be- cause ofthe fact that a break here or there and a little extra effort might have turned narrow losses to Gardner-Webb and Elon into vic- tories which would have made the final record 6-4-1. Football With only eight seniors using up their eligibility in the Elon game, the Lions could look forward to the return of a large corps of exper- ienced personnel for the 1984 sea- son. No doubt Coach Rick Gil- strap and his staff would concentrate their spring recruiting efforts on finding replacements for the departing seniors: Jackie Wil- liamson, John Sprinkle, Larry Brow, Danny Gilbert, Allen Scott, John Whitley, Earnest Cook, and Larry Holding. A Thus, football was a series of surprises at Mars Hill College dur- ing 1983-84g it was the beginning of a promising new era. T!-uN'2in'Id5l-'Ti-.i4'7.i:::.-.3 ag.-5.52 5.5, . The Lady Lions Volleyball team defeated Furman, but lost to Baptist College ol' Charleston on their way to a tournament in Florida over Fall break. The Lady Lions did not play up to their potential but seemed to do just enough to get by Furman. This style of play caught up with them when they lost to Charleston in three games. Once in Florida, the Lady Lions put it all together to win their first match: but once again were unable to rally as they lost their next three. The filth match saw the Lady Lions come together one last time to win and take a respectable fourth place in the tournament. The team returned to NC. and played Wofford on Thursday. October 20. The match went well as the girls won in two straight games. They defeated their next opponent ofthe night as the girls from Queens College could muster only one point in two games. Friday. October ll. the Lady Lions traveled to Tusculum. where they destroyed both Tennessee Temple in two games per match. This outing was reported to be the best the Lady Lions played together all year. Maryville College was the Lady Lions' next victim as they traveled to Chambers Gym only to be turned away in three straight games. All in all. the Lady Lions had a good season. The linal 28-18 record was second best to the 41- ll of last year. The 9-3 district record was one ol' the best. but it did not qualify the team for the playoffs due to a weighed point system.
