It's the highlight of the fall semester, and it brings everyone close together to celebrate themselves in one spectacular weekend. It seems like there is no one left out. There is so much preparation involved by the football team, band, various union committees, spirit boosters, and spectatorsg everyone gets to vote for represen- tatives and the Queen and King. It's a very intimate time with strong emotions and feelings. Excitement seems to bubble out of the sidewalk in the form of painted lion paws, and this year brought with it the dedication of the new fountain outside of the administration building. They finished with an impressive 42-10 won-lost record, and they gained a first-round spot in the NAIA District 26 playoffs. The victorious squad received two post-season honors. Coach Pat Sams, in his second year as volleyball coach and director of the women's intercollegiate program, was chosen as Coach of the Year for District 26, which includes 23 other schools in North Carolina. Freshman Lavonda Wagner was selected as a member of the first team all-district squad. Led by team captain Steve Dooley at forward and Jerry Brooks at point guard and strengthened by returnees Joe White and Tony Mitchell, the Lions exhibited the disciplined, under-control Ronai playing style in the 10- game pre-Christmas portion of their schedule. The pres- ence of a couple of outstanding transfers, Russell Foster and Tim Huskey, and a good assortment of tall, talented freshmen - including guards Todd Blondin and Pete Baldini and forwards Steve McDonald, Pressley Boyd and Dave Norris - really helped. After Christmas, when 6-8 forward Pierre Lamitte, another transfer, be- came eligible, Lion scoring and rebounding improved still further. Coach Ronai had warned Lion fans not to look for his charges among the top contenders in NAIA District 26 this season, but he had promised they would be competi- tive and enjoyable to watch, and he was correct! tif v fl' E,- ltlkls 5 Q 7. - A' '1 My A J f 11' 1 ,rj , X F! gif: .141 'N 87' 9-E 9 , Q ' ' ' . Scoring leaders were freshmen LaVonda Wagner and Robin Lucas, juniors Holly Hough and Bunny Cardwell and sophomore Lisa McFadden. Rebounding strength was supplied by Cardwell, Wagner and Lucas. Sophomore Karen Jarvis, team captain, and Hough were the assist leaders, and McFad- den, Jarvis and freshman Mary Anne Joseph- son contributed nicely to the team's effective- ness with their timely steals. This is not an attempt by the LAUREL to be biased or suggest that the spring sports are not as important as any of the other areas of athletics. lt is simply because the events take place after the last required deadlines. Hopefully, to make up for the deletion of the 1983 spring sports, we have included some of the best mo- ments from the spring of 1982. .v n. . ,loo .. Q91 V... ,,.. at z.,,,mvmq14gQ! L,. A , .mn G- .A , 4 s u , an fi THE BEGINNING On August 20, the doors to the residence halls opened for eager, excited, enthusiastic, and road weary new students. Behind these doors awaited the bright, ultra responsible residence directors - all well briefed and trained for any situation. The students, parents, brothers, sisters, and hired servants worked steadfastly to unload the station wagons, U-hauls, trucks, freight trains, and pack mules. The freshmen arrived early and were thrown into an extensive orienta- tion program called Gateway. They attended seminars on how to survive college and met people to help them survive. Some of them did not survive Gateway though. The students stood in lines, made friends, stood in lines, got a chance to try college food, stood in lines, registered for classes, stood in lines, and stood in lines. Did I mention sleep? Good, l wasn't suppose to. All in all, it was a great help to the newcomers. As one freshman put it when asked what he thought of Gateway: Huh? The festival was held in early October just when the coloring of autumn started falling into place and the campus was alive with the traditional sounds of Appalachian folk and bluegrass music. Appalachian craftsmen displayed their talents and helped many spectators experience a new art. There was more than enough music, dance, fun and fellowship to go around. t ,lf - a y Hiiggegly- .., r ff Y 1 ,,,.-.fp-'I ',,-iff 1+ if if mr? :Nw . 5, 1- f -r I 4-' '.'. These organizations are academic or extracurricular. The academic ones are usually sponsored by a particular department and have a faculty member as the advisor. The various groups included on this and the following pages indicated something of the diversity which exists on our campus. We regret that it was not possible to get pictures of all the academic organizations whatever the reason. Those not pictured include the following: Business! The LAUREL agrees with this feeling. It's important to prove that our best attractions aren't the buildings, hills, and trees. As far back as 1930 - that's as far as our Laurels go - there was some type of 'LLaurel Court, In 1955 this court moved to a contest where girls were selected by dormi- tories and Miss Laurel was chosen by a celebrity from outside the college community. In 1966 the entire proce- dure became an actual beauty pageant, not unlike the Miss America or Miss USA pageants. The Equal Rights Amend- ment movement did away with the Miss Laurel tradition. But now that ERA has been done away with, we decided to resurrect the Miss Laurel tradition. Returning to the original idea, each dormitory elected a girl to represent it on the Miss Laurel Court. From this group of beauties, Mrs. Peggy Beshears Harris, Miss Laurel 1959, chose the 1983 Miss Laurel. Ladies and gentlemen, the 1983 Miss Laurel and her court. . F P148 'h - w- ,gan . The cover design, type face choices, style choices - as well as a tentative layout for the entire book - and other important decisions must be finished before the school year even begins. When it does, the deadlines then come rapidly, and sleep comes rarely for the editors, photographers and other staff members. This year, with a good staff of photographers and a lot of help from other students, things went more smoothly than might have been expected. x..t u 551 'au' x te... we bile.. as t-is Q01 CLOSING My last day working on theLaurelis also my last day at Mars Hill College It is during this time that l reflect on the time that l have spent here remembering the challenges joys and developing that l have done as an individual Mars Hill has been the time for me where I have grown both intellectually and emotionally where l have molded and shaped my life and future I hope that when each of you relieve moments from this past year through the Laurel you will experience the special feelings that l now am At this time l would also like to recogmze those who have helped me create the 1983 Laurel These people are Shannon Joyner Brad Nuckolls Marvin Howell Jeff Lawter Mark Sale Leslie Smith and Bruce Roffey A good yearbook is only as good as its photographs I had the privilege of working with a fantastic set of Carl Mosca Jeff Morgan Tom McCombs Ben Mullinax Jean Ann Bilbo Brittany lSneel Plaut and David Wachter A special thanks to Mr John Campbell for pulling us out of some pretty tight spots lt has also been a pleasure to work with Jerry Gay our representative from Josten s He has provided me with invaluable assistance throughout the production of the yearbook Without the support and encouragement of Walter Smith lbelow rightl our advisor the Laurel would never have gotten off on time He was always there ready to help And then I can t leave out the most important influences all of my friends and the students here on campus The Laurelis a reflection of each of you and the moments we have created and shared May God travel with each of you on your individual journeys and adventures James Jones Editor photographers.
