After the outstanding record of the 1980 football season C8- 2-11 and getting to play in the NAIA national football championship playoffs, everyone wondered just how the 1981 Lions would compare. The answer came early in the season. After a 17-10 victory in the opener against Liberty Baptist, the Lions were beaten 8-0 by Elon, the defending national champion. Two weeks later ffollowing a 10-6 win over Catawbal, they were beaten again, 26-15, by Gardner- Webb. That ended playoff hopes. This year's Lions peaked at mid-season then dropped three of their last four games. The season was ended with a record of 5-5. A native of Mars Hill who played varsity basketball for the Lions and was graduated in 1966, Coach Sams had been program director of the Asheville-Buncombe YMCA for six years when he was picked to revive the Lady Lions athletic program, He immediately an- nounced his intention of building on the strengths which the program had known before a disasterous 1980-81 season. The volleyball squad was the first to feel his steadying influence, but the basketball team ' f proved an even better reflection of his coaching skills. 'L .1 4 4 A . The Lady Lions, led by experienced sophomores Holly Hough, Brenda Caldwell and Beth McCluskey, jumped off to a surprising 3-O record with victories ' over Barber Scotia, Warren Wilson and Catawba. Six freshmen, including Lisa McFadden, Karen Jarvis and fr' -V joanne Christopher, added strength and enthusiasm to the young team. Responding well to Coach Sams' effective leadership and dedicating themselves to a rigorous program of training and practice, the 1981-82 Lady Lions showed promise of making a significant contribution to the regaining of the winning tradition at Mars Hill. LAMBDA CHI Lambda Chi is Mars Hill's newest local fraternity. The group may see a national recognition soon. The national social frater- nity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, has given Mars Hill College a chance for establishing a chapter. If everything goes as planned, a colony will be installed and later a chapter. Colony members receive official status although they are not initiated formally as brothers in the National SAE. Sigma Alpha Epsilon stresses pledge education and is very anti-hazing. First in scholarship, leadership, and friendship, Lambda Chi promises excellence. Y ,H 1-J., 141 ' , Y 4 -. ' :mp 1 '- l . . is f' ' if l iris . Omega Kappa Alpha remains one of the most active sororities on campus by sponsoring many activities throughout the year. The sisters are the new Lady Lion Backers and were present at all the girls' basketball games to promote cam- pus spirit. The annual see-saw-a-thon was held to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. The sorority also rolled around the rink at Banks Roller Rink at the Easter Seals Skate-athon. Homecoming activities included an alumnae brunch for the sisters, the selling of 500 Head for the Mountains home- coming buttons, and a skit at the Lion Growl, in which the OKA Punk March- ing Band thrilled the audience with an outstanding and memorable perfor- mance. The sisters participated in the Halloween carnival at McConnell Gym with a Basketball Free Throw. OKA still continues to support an adopted grand- mother. The sisters also raised money for the Mars Hill Elementary School library. 132 ALPHA CHI 1 MARSHALS BARBELL CL UB ATEWAY STAFF ..J A 4 1 .-. . .
