Trying to build an effective line of communication between students and administration as well as building a more efficient government were only two of the goals of the '73-'74 SGA. Writing of a new constitution, working for the passage of the social goals to give the college a basis for change, and checking the effect of the equal rights amendment on women's hours and other restrictions -- these were only a few of the issues faced during a swiftly moving year of change for the 1973-1974 Student Government Association. ff 'Oxxx f ABOVE Senators for 1973-1974 include tstandlngl Steve Yacobi David Qualls Mike Snyder Martha Gray Dan Nicoll John McNutt Keith Wlglesworth Mickey McLaughlin Pam Peterson Steve McAIister Seated Top Row Mark Grimes Sarah Huff Gary Cnsmond tparliamen tarlanl Priscilla Canupp Susan Benjamin Valerie McNabb Seated Bottom Row Susan Carscaddon David Robinson Barbara Neal Paula Carter Pam Watterson Dan Christian Carol Stultz and Bob Wheless 26 I Student Government Association f fl, . if t , Uv AI 4 if , , -3' . Activities included an evening of improvisational theatre begun with a lasagne supper, a poetry reading and a play performed by a visiting group. In emor Sall Belllvloffitt .,,, ,. ,-ff Surely this hour reminds us that we must learn to live with life's tragic element. Cn this campus, we are accustomed to the sounds of vitality and life, to celebration and ioyg and we are stunned by the intrusions of tragedy. And yet, in oar moments of serious reflections about life, we know that it is not all celebration and joyg there is also the dark spectre of sin and suffering and loss. Our view of life and our faith are woefully inadequate if they do not take into account life's tragic element as well as its joy. This hour is a poignant reminder that life's richness grows out of personal relationships - and the loss of a single member permanently diminishes our whole community. For her close friends, SalIy's death is a deep and personal griefg for all it has brought sorrow and a sense of loss. - Robert Melvin, Chaplain Mars Hill College Memorial X 157 RIGHT: Mini-mester courses - meeting new people. having new experiences. Hodges, jr. My life has been based around three central con- cerns, and these have been and will ll hopel cohtinue to be the controlling factors in my daily existence. I live for my God, myself and music. I became a Christian and a Baptist when I was seven. As I look back, I was so young that I now realize that I may not have known a whole lot about what I was doing. But l found out... While I have a strong belief in God, I also have a strong belief in myself. I learned early in life that little was to be gained by timidity and that the quiet, shy kid's ideas never got across. So I have cultivated a confi- dence that borders on egomania. While I try not to be obnoxious, I am outspoken, and I consciously make an effort to be a leader. Finally, I live for music. I believe in music. I have seen music's power and the wonderous feats of communi- cation it can accomplish. Music has been my mode of ex- pression and my catalyst since I was very young, and I know how much it has meant to me. -Tom C. Hodges, lr. Preparations for the weekend ahead appeared on Monday as spirit signs and displays began appearing all over campus. A pep rally on Thursday kicked off the beginning of homecoming activities. Friday night, the music of Earth Wind, and Fire was heard in Moore Auditorium. Alarm clocks woke many students bright and early Saturday morning. Final preparations of floats, signs and displays were completed before 12:00. Dedication of the new Wren College Union was directly before lunch and the big question was where to find a seat. An exciting, closely contested game with Gardner-Webb Bulldogs was disappointing only in the final score. The LIONS gave their fans many thrills but did not produce a victory. A mad rush followed the game to beat the line in the cafeteria and change clothes for the dance and the music of the Cambridge Men. Homecoming 1973- Exciting, fun, unique. Homecoming 1209 Bascom Lamar Lunsford helped to bring the skill and artistry of Appalachian folklore and music to the world by performing at the White House and before Queen Elizabeth of England, by recording over three thousand ballads and folksongs for the Library of Congress, and by writing two booklets concerning folklore and ballads. The vast Lunsford collection of folklore material is now part of MHC's Memorial Library. An annual event on the MHC campus, this year's Festival was more successful than previously. Dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian music and folklore, the Festival is the only one to bear Mr. Lunsford's name. Musicians, dancers, and craftsmen from surrounding towns and MHC participated in giving spectators demonstrations and shows. 4 si., av RIGHT: Spinning wheel demonstrations, and the like, are given all day during the Festival to the interested. Students find relax- ing entertainment at the Sunday, Wednesday and Friday movies, es- pecially enjoyable since they have included such favorites as The Sound of Music, The Andromeda Strain, Slaughterhouse Five, The Other, and WUSA. Coffeehouse en- tertainment is always popularg and, of course, special concerts by such visiting artists as the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra are enjoyable.
