Point the cam- era and push the button and you have a picture. A child can do it. And yet photography is also a dis- tinctive and uniquely modern med- ium of expression acknowledged as art. The history of the medium is important. We included it in this yearbook in an attempt to show how masters of the past and pres- ent, as well as the photographers for this book, have tried to capture a mood . . .a moment with: 1 A l J.. The Flavor of the Times 1 I 1 4 As we watched, John Kennedy was martyred. Rights were crushed at PeopIe's Park and the Pentagon. Four dead at Kent State signaled the end ofthe New Frontier. We saw racism smashed in Selma and Birmingham. We saw ourselves caught up in the quagmire that was to become Vietnam. As we listened, gunshots took the lives of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Rock and Love filled our ears at Monterey, Woodstock -I T544 and Atlanta. We keenly felt the pain of the massacre at Chicago and felt the joy of the triumph of Mora- torium Day, when the nation's heart poured out through its young, We felt the pain of progress in our eyes as they smarted with the smog and in our wallets with the pain of inflation. Your children have sampled many varie- ties of life. Other people's lives. Time now is to come home. To find something of our own. The Chair- man Mao makes threats and offers freedom. Hitler got his. B. F. Skin- ner had an idea and so did Huxley, but many of us find reality in Poe's pictures . . . and mirrors. ls there nothing more to look for in life than ticker tape, television, visions and hopes of pleasure and the certainty of death? Perhaps a brick home and a Country Squire by Ford will make hell easier. ls the philosophy we hold the basis for our actions, or do we merely rationalize our ir- rational behavior? Americans gather around the tube like a prim- itive tribe around the fire as we lis- ten to our chief, with one exception. We in America bring into our living rooms profanity never knownto the tribal people, America, you sen- tence your children to exile be- cause of your pride. America, without your children, you will die. Your salvation is in your plea, forgive me, my children. l love you ...please come home. I 11 1 1 1 1 Hard hit by injuries to key players, the 1971 Lion foot- ball team opened with a couple of bomb-outs, hit its peak in mid-season, and closed out with a dismal pair of losses for a mediocre 3-6 record. Even before the season started it was obviousthe Lions were going to have their problems. Walker Hodges, who had been the back-up quarterback in 1970 under- studying Marvin Parrott, did not return to school in August. As a result, Coach Harold Taylor installed Kip Smith as his starting signal caller and moved freshman Danny Robinson into the back-up position. Neither had sufficient experience, but both tackled the job with enthusiasm. Before the opener, speedy Johnny Dawking, first black on a Mars Hill grid squad who was a sensation last year as a freshman running back and pass catcher, was knocked out with a back ailment. He had been counted on heavily to add zip to the Lion offense. Freshman Jimmy Bennett and defensive terror Ted Williams both had injuries that hurt the whole team. ln spite of the losses and the weaknesses, however, there were signs over which Lion fans could be en- couraged. Jeff Davis, this year's winner of Mars Hill's punt, pass, and kick contest, seemed to do everything but dance around on the field at half-time. Another encouraging factor was the performance of freshman quarterback Robinson. With the will and ability to throw the ball, Robinson proved to be a top- notch signal caller. The Lions finished the season with a 79.1 rushing average per game and 125 yards passing compared to 138 and 143 for their opponents. With most of the '71 personnel due back in '72 and membership in the Carolinas Conference a possibility, better times hopefully lie ahead. There are certain images etched into the minds of students of every era concerning their lives on the campus. It has been so down through many generations of Mars Hill students. As photographer-editors who have created this book for you, we hope it will have a real impact now - in 1972 - but also that it will evoke fond reflections for you in 1984. Our heads are deeply reflected in these pages. Unlike a newspaper, a yearbook is influenced highly by thoughts and opinions of the editors. We hope our thoughts have been good and our opinions sound. We have done our best to bring you the best of 1971-72, and we sincerely hope it will be worth remembering in 1984.
