Yet rarer is a man, a genuine doer, a go-getter for the mere betterment of humanity. Initiative, ability, and endless willpowerg all are innate attributes of such a man. This man began with a dream, inspired by relent- less defiance of deplorable conditions. Thus, he in- stigated the Community Development Institute and gave Mars Hillians a chance to share themselves through tutoring and working in the community. Eleven years he has given to us, so to him, our man, the Mars Hill man - Dr. Richard Lee Hoffman - we give our dedication. b 'Til l 0 W N 1 M. dz ..x.1 .82 -rwik X-. h A - ,,x'.,x f Q. ' 'T .x'. 1 ? The results fully justified the reprieve. Coach Dal Shealy and his assistant, Harold Taylor, were overwhelmed by a turnout of about 120 candi dates for the team. Their first big task was to ap- praise each man then try to decide where each play- er could best contribute to the squad and to trim the roster to a manageable total of about 80. ln the three weeks before the first game they had to overcome problems created by the year's layoff and to try to mold four score individuals into a team. At first the drills were three times a day, then they tapered to twice and, finally, to one. The fact that most players reported in good physical condition helped. Gradually the squad began rounding into shape. Former junior college All-American Marvin Parrot won the quarterback job, veteran Bernie Perchinski nailed down an outside linebacker's spot and headed up a fast-developing defense. Right cornerback Gary Findley, free safety Gerald Whitley and strong safety Gerald Price started looking good. Parrot began throwing with accuracy and the receivers began running their patterns smoothlyg timing improved and the Lions - the new Lions - took shape for the Sept. 13 opener in Meares Stadium against Glenville State of West Virginia. The Lions drew first blood in the second quarter as Whitley picked off a Glenville pass and romped 35 yards for the score. Another veteran, David McFee, booted the first of many extra pointsg and the players and fans went wild with joy. The visitors proved, however, that experience is importantg and they clawed their way back with two TD's and a field goal to hand the Lion hopes a tem- porary setback, 7-17. The play of the Lions in the opener did give a good hint of things to come. Defensive end Gene Radford recovered two fumbles, and halfback Robert Griffin gained 58 yards in 18 carries. Parrot connected on 9 of 17 passes, four of them to end Danny Phillips. The performance of the new Lions evoked a newspaper comment that they had been beaten on the scoreboard but not in spirit Coach Shealy pre ducted l think we II see a victory from these boys next week His boys made him a prophet They whopped a Catawba JV team loaded with varsity players 28 2 McFee booted field goals or 29 35 and 33 yards and linebacker Strlb Barton intercepted a pass re covered a fumble and made 14 tackles A light drizzle failed to dampen the enthusiasm of Lion fans as they celebrated the team s first victory and Coach Shealy rewarded the players with a light workout the following Monday 1 , ' 1 . , , , . . . Findley and Whitley intercepted passes to set up scores by Griffin and fullback Ford West. The superb Lion defense was led by Ted Williams and Tony Surace. Pushing across a tie-breaking TD in the fourth quarter, the Lions protected their lead with two in- spired goal-line stands inside their 10-yard line. Still flying high and surprising their critics, the Lions made it 3-1 with a 21 -2 rout of the Appalachian junior varsity in Meares Stadium on Oct. 3, a Friday afternoon contest and a late addition to the schedule. Parrot engineered a 96-yard scoring drive on the second series of downs. Griffin had 55 yards in the drive and capped it with the TD plunge. Price recovered a fumble on the ASU 37 to set up the second score. Walker Hodges guided the team at QB, and halfback Terry Dease covered 22 of the 37 yards. The final score came on a 30-yard run by Finley with an intercepted pass. Thus, the 1969 Lions came to homecoming with a winning record and high hopes against a big, explosive team from Bluefield State. It was a beautiful day for football with a large crowd of alumni back for the day's events. Bluefield scored first but the Lions came right back with a touchdown drive capped by Griffin's TD dive. The Lions defense proved the team's greatest as- set as the two squads battled on even terms. Lail, Ronnie lVlcDaniels and Tom Purser. In the fourth quarter McFee kicked a 33-yard field goal for the margin of victory, but again the defense had to save the day. Surace made a key play at the Lion 3, hitting a Bluefield runner so hard he fumbled and Williams recovered his second loose ball of the day. A Georgetown fKy.J team which had been averag- ing 347 yards per game total offense and 31 points was held to only 124 yards by the rugged Lion de- fense: but the visitors tacked a TD and field goal on the scoreboard and handed the Lions their second defeat, 0-10, and only shutout. Parrott set a school record with 115 yards rushing, including one 63-yard run on a busted pass play. Despite the fact that Coach Shealy pronounced his offense the sharpest it has been all season just before the game at Newberry fS.C.i on Oct. 25, the Lions suffered their third defeat, 6-14. A fumbled punt and a blocked field goal attempt proved the undoing of the Lions. November rolled around as Gardner-Webb, an old Baptist junior college rival, came to the campus to renew the rivalry. lt was Haywood County Night and 'Parents Night for the parents of Mars Hill players. The Lions offense exploded for 27 points and the defense held firm all the way. The Lions roared to 412 yards total offense and the defense held the Bulldogs to a measley safety. Ftich Harris scored twice on passes from Parrot and Alan McCracken caught a 2-point conversion pass in the fourth quar- ter. McDaniels had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, and Barton pounced on two fumbles. Dennis Hefner also proved a demon on defense. Enthused over their 5-3 record and eager to make it 7-3, the Lions faced the two final games on the road with optimism. Despite the fact that the West Virginia Tech team average 241 pounds per man - far bigger than the Lions - Shealy's charges played nose-to-nose. McFee broke the scoring ice with a 31-yard field goal in the second periodg then, stymied on the ground the Lions took to the air. Parrot completed 10 of 38 passes for 206 yards and the lone TD. A minute before the half McDaniels recovered a fumble on the Tech 36. Parrot threw for 18 to Harris and for 17 to Dease and the score. Findley ran for 2 points to chalk up the final score, 11-0. The defense intercepted two Tech passes and re- covered three fumbles. Hefner batted down several fcontinuted on Page 613 amqraziiswsswcmrsmv. .iimm -va.'iP:-Jiwimiu, .wwMi225lMiF4lfK3li'2.ti2lll ..Srfi1ffaBliE2iiSTttJxQi:mstefv 3 giaI:23ag,3q1I2f?af:zg--''fff q-llA , ,,,, ,W i , I1 ll I .. Zack Pinner, a demon on the line, suffered a broken rib and was out for the season. Now it was 6-3 and the Lions wanted that seventh win at the expense of Hampton-Sydney. H-S took the lead in the second quarter by smoth- ering Parrot in the end zone for a safety. Then in the third quarter Griffin ran 16 yards for a TD. After that, however, the Lion offense never got inside the H-S 35. A short MHC punt in the fourth quarter gave the home team good position and they punched across the winning touchdown with only 1:45 left in the game. Even in defeat Parrot passed the 1,000-yard mark in passing yardage to rank himself third in passing in NAIA District 6 and fourth in total offense. Not surprisingly, the Lion defense grabbed top defensive honors in the district, allowing only 205.6 yards per game. When it was time for the post-season laurels, Ftad- ford was named the Most Valuable Player. Wil- liams and Parrot were cited best on defense and of- fense, and Drew Plemmons was named the best blocker. Soupy Campbell got the special spirit trophyg and Danny Balcome and West shared the Marion Powell Award for displaying most outstanding sportsmanship. Barton had won the tackling honors: and Whitley, Parrot and West were named tri-cap- tains. 61 l l l l . Wil- moth previewed his season with 19 points. The good start continued as Mil- ligan fell 105-92 in Chambers Gym. Wilmoth and Mazoyer had 25 points apiece, and Bob Peterson chipped in 17 more. King College of Bristol, Va., al- ways tough for the Lions, started the Woodmen on a downward spin with an 86-74 licking. Four quick baskets by Reeves late in the sec- ond quarter gave the Lions a half- time lead, but they blew it in the second half. High scoring Lion was Mazoyer with 23. Opening the Tip-Off Tournament in the UNC-A gym on the night after Thanksgiving, the Lions ran into a red-hot Gardner-Webb. The Bull- dogs' great all-American candi- date, George Adams, blazed for 45 points. Despite good ball handling by Miller, who had 16 points, and 19-point and 17-point efforts by Wilmoth and Mazoyer, the Lions came out on the short end of a 95- 82 score. Wilmoth had 19. Next came a two-game road trip to South Caro- lina in which the Lions were edged by Erskine, 80-83, and clipped by Augusta, 79-100. Wilmoth hit a new high of 32 points in the first game, and lvlazoyer had 26 against Augusta, led by its 7-foot center George Sch rapen. Next the Lions journeyed to Boiling Springs for a regular-season tilt with Gardner-Webb. Reeves and Wilmoth controlled the backboards with 17 and 13 rebounds3 Mazoyer bagged 30 points and Wilmoth had 26 as the Lions socked it to 'em, 104- 94. The loss was the first for the Bulldogs on their home court since February 1966. The exhilaration of the victory was short-lived as the Lions dropped an 83-95 decision to New- berry in Chambers Gym, the beginning of an 9- game losing streak. The tailspin included a 94-101 loss to Erskine and Asheville Holiday Classic losses to the University of Tennessee at Chatta- nooga, 88-1093 Western Carolina, 83-90, and Ten- nessee Wesleyan, 63-74. The other losses included Wofford, 75-87, a special contest with G-W at Canton, 101-106, Newberry, 84-911 and Presbyterian, 81-88. Finally, in the first home game of the second semester, the jinx was broken as the Lions clob- bered Milligan, 105-85, and began a win streak. Next they routed Maryville 109-90. They were temporarily derailed by nationally ranked Augusta, 83-99: but they bounced back with a 93-79 win over Presbyterian. Wilmoth's 30 points gave him 480 for the season, breaking the old mark of 476 set last year by Rudy Reeves. ' ASL, ti.: ' I 'A 5 Next came a 101-91 victory over Tusculum fol- lowed by a 72-89 upset at the hands of UNC-A. Then came a moment of truthg the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb were in Chambers Gym to see if they could avenge that previous loss at Boiling Springs. It was Wilmoth and Nlazoyer Night, a perfect oc- casion for the tribute since the two came to Mars Hill from Gardner-Webb. As it turned out. this was their night. Jim and Dickie helped guide the Lions to one of their most satisfying wins, 82-77. The big gun, scoring wise, was Johnson, who pumped in 30 points and, along with Wilmoth, hauled down 17 re- bounds, Just to prove their new-found effectiveness wasn't a fluke, the Lions came back on VaIentine's night and pinned an 87-79 loss on the Washington 81 Lee Generals, who had previously beaten Navy. Mazoyer and Wilmoth shared scoring honors with 22 each. Perhaps the victory was too heady, for the Lions responded by dropping a lop-sided 70-100 game to Maryville. Then, they jumped back into the win col- umn with a nifty 82-71 win over Wofford. Wilmoth's 21 points broke the school scoring record for a ca- reer. A return match with Western proved to be a fiasco as the referees called five technicals on the Lions to aid the Catamounts to an 85-80 decision. The ex- perience apparently discouraged the Lions so much that they played one of their poorest games of the season in the finale against UNC-A, losing 67-87. One of the bright spots of the year was the record- breaking of Wilmoth. He set new marks in single- game, season and career rebounding totals, and he hung up new records in rebounding averages for a season and for a career. His 1108 points in two years is also a new goal for future Mars Hill cagers to shoot at in their careers. 69 JL. .,- e w A , n Q I V6 Q T?
