A student may look like one hundred others, but his beliefs, ideas, goals, and ideals must be decidedly his ovvn. The college student also learns that he must be much more than an individual - he must be an individual who can function successfully as a cog in his circle of friends, his society, and his world. Since joining the faculty in 1926, he has accepted many responsibilities and duties willingly and has seen them through to the end with a dedication that never stops. He joined the campus as a teacher of economics and government, but through his willingness to work for a college he loves, has achieved the role of academic dean. It has been a long road and not always an easy road, but his strong convictions and dedication to Mars Hill as an institution of education and a home for many individual students, have brought him to a posi- tion well deserving such a man. Although he shall be leaving us soon, we will not soon forget him. In sincere appreciation for service well rendered, we, the students, gratefully dedicate the 1968 Laurel to Dean Ralph lVI. Lee. Bentley President 22 From the beginning Mars Hill College has striven to keep within the vanguard of educa- tional progress in its area. lt began as a junior college in 1921 and in 1962, after approval of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, became a senior college. Following five years of dedicated work, lVlars Hill received its senior college accreditation during the fall semester. lVlars Hill will now be able to devote full time to its new program of expansion, instituted by President Bentley, Emphasis on Excellence. This year the faculty and administration adopted a revision of the core curriculum for next year. The system will group the freshmen and sophomores in the same fundamental courses while many repetitious courses will be cut. This will provide more emphasis on courses necessary for the foundation of more advanced study. Each academic department will set forth the requirements for a major in the department. T Frances IVI. Finally the night arrived and the stage was set with an exquisite chandelier and special runway into the audience. Following the splendid array of talent the judges chose five finalists: Janis Elam, Martha Morris, Maria Hunt, Cornelia Akers, and Ginger Eddleman. As tension mounted each of the finalists was asked two questions, one serious and the other humorous. All answered their questions with a sense of individuality. Then the decision of the judges was announced. Ginger was named Miss Congeniality, and Maria was identified as first runner-up. Then, while everyone held his breath, Master of Ceremonies Bill Gardner announced the name of the new Miss Laurel, Corney Akers. Q .Q W3 Pt -Tai lamar Stringtield Day A day of tribute to the memory of a gifted North Carolinian, composer-flutist Lamar Stringfield, was celebrated November 4, among the Blue Ridge Peaks where Stringfield spent his boyhood. Among String- field's many achievements were his receiving a Pulitzer Prize for his orchestral suite, From the Southern Mountains, his direction of the Charlotte Symphony from 1948-1949, and the composition of the musical score for Le Gette Blythe's musical drama Short Free- dom. In memory of such a successful Mars Hill Alumnus a dinner was held on the campus followed by a mixed chorus of IVIHC students performing StringfieId's can- tata Peace, Other ceremonies included a mid-after- noon program featuring the N. C. String Quartet. I - K., . g -4 f- ,A-fb. 101 19 fr- F Rat Week Rat Week, known this year as Freshman Apprecia- tion Week, was anything but that. Freshmen were re- quired to wear gold and blue beanies, perform in the cafeteria, carry books, in short to follow the orders of the upperclassmen. Sloppy Day was followed by Dress Up Day, and Dress Up Day by days of good-na- tured fun to encourage upperclassmen to meet and appreciate the future leaders of the campus. 102 Rat Queen: Donna Long Ill v I' .Z 0.4 r Harrell Pool, and Chambers Gym llerlrcatrons A highlight of the Homecoming-Founders Day Celebration on October 7 was the formal opening of a complex of new facilities for physical education, athletics and recreation. Several hundred persons gathered in the stadium for the ceremonies. Large gold ribbons connected the speakers stand with the two new buildings and with a handsome marker desig- nating the outdoor facilities as lVleare's Athletic Field. Although the wind played havoc with the ribbon, the men for whom the facilities are named symbolically clipped them and Dr. Elmer West offered an appropriate prayer. The grandchildren of Nlr. The Lions were outclassed, however, and Furman walked away with a 42-O victory. 107 xx, x t e-'J - : The following week the Lions, coached by Don Henderson and Ron Bromley, faced another stern road game. Although every man on the squad fought his hardest the Catawba Indians pulled out a 28-O win. After a week layoff the gridders traveled to Nlary- ville to do battle with the Scotties. In the first quarter the Scots pushed across a score and held on for the rest of the game to sneak a 7-O victory. The next game was homecoming for the Lions. It was a charged-up team that took the field to battle with the Eagles of Carson-Newman. C-N took a 14-O lead before Felton Stephens put the Lions back in the ball game with two field goals. Dan Balcome later scampered seven yards for a TD, but the try for the two-point conversion failed, and the Lions took their fourth loss, 14-12. Once again the Lions fought hard, but simply did not have enough as the West Virginia team earned a 30-7 victory. The Emory and Henry Wasps were Mars Hill's opponents in our last home football game. The Lions jumped into a quick 14-8 lead in the first quarter but the Wasp passing game proved to be too much for the Lions as E8tH won 37-21. ln this game end Felton Stephens caught 6 passes for 106 yards, a school record. The next game found the Lions at Cullowhee for a scrap with the Western Carolina Catamounts. On the first play from scrimmage Dan Balcome ran 76 yards to put lVlars Hill ahead 6-O. The lead was short lived, however, as the Cats poured it on relentlessly and emerged with a 56-12 win. Balcome set a school record for rushing yardage in a single game, breaking his own record set against Carson-Newman. 110 QI! 1? In the final game of the season lVlars Hill topped Frederick College everywhere except on the scoreboard, and the Lions took their eighth loss of the season 7-6. Despite the dismal O-8 season, several school records were set. Dan Shook ran up a total offense of 611 yards to top his old mark of 410. Shook also broke his own mark for passing yardage in a season. Bill Dyar, in a close battle with Balcome, took the rushing record with 324 yards. In the pass-receiving department two records were set. Stephens and Bal- come tied for yards gained passing with 184 each. Jerry Blevins caught a record 18 passes. Statistically the 1967 Lions were an improvement over the team of the previous season. This time, how- ever, there is no wait'll next year. Football has left Nlars Hill College. Will it ever return? The season marked the beginning of a new era in lVlars Hill College Basketball. Chambers Gymnasium was used for the first time, ridding us of the cramped, crowded Crackerbox. The schedule, especially at the beginning of the season, was tough for any team. The slow start could be partially attributed to the fact that four freshmen were filling starting roles: Eddie lVliller, Larry Goodwin, Bob Peterson, and Mike Hoover. The big problem for the team, however, was lack of height. The tallest man on the squad was only 6-3, much too short for consistent rebounding advan- tages. Augusta proved to be much superior to the Lions and took an 84-61 win. The following two days saw the Lions at Asheville- Biltmore for the A-B Tournament. ln the tournament Nlars Hill gained a split losing 86-72 and defeating Milligan 80-65. Larry Goodwin received the sports- manship award forthe tournament. Following the tournament the roundballers re- turned home for a weekend against Campbell and Pembroke Colleges. Twice more the Lions were denied victory in Chambers, as the visitors topped us, 107-96 and 94-69. The cagers then took to the road for a nine-game road stand. In the first of these games a charged up Wofford College topped the Lions 105-84. In the next game, the Lions faced Asheville-Biltmore again and lost 103-73. After that followed losses to Erskine i68- 5OJ and Tusculum C88-829, then the Woodmen took a much needed break for exams. The Lions resumed action in the Newberry Tour- nament, January 1-2. ln the opening round a red-hot Newberry five overwhelmed the Lionmen 115-86. Two nights later the Lions faced Campbell College once more, and forced the Campbell crew to hustle to pull out a 85-78 victory. For the final road game of the present stand, the Woodmen traveled to Washington 81 Lee University where they met defeat 79-55. Returning home after nearly two months, the Lions hungered for a win and were not to be denied. The Lions completely dominated the game as Tusculum was soundly defeated 94-74 for our first win in the spacious new gym. The Lions played two more home games, but were unable to come up with another victory. They were defeated 90-72 by Wofford, and 89-81 by Newberry. The cagers took to the road for two more and were still unable to come up with a win. King College dominated the entire second half after a close first half, and toppled the Lions, 104-80. In a trip to Mary- ville the Lions came out cold and had to play catch-up ball but were unable to do it successfully and Maryville 81 Co. had a 78-76 triumph. Returning home, the Lions were angry and ready for a win. Once again Milligan fell victim to the Lions by the same 15 point margin. The score was 90-75. Prospects for the 1968 track squad looked the best they had in several seasons with new faces and much experience back from the last year's team. Coach Charles Phillips was optimistic about the season and fully expected to improve on the 1-7-1 record compiled in 1967. He expected to be strongest in the field events, such as javelin, shot put, broad jump, triple jump, and discus. The weak points were expected to be the track events. A big boost to the track team was junior Russell Barrett, a distance man capable of setting school records in the two-mile, mile, and half-mile. February 17 .... .... This year we wanted to let the student decide the main theme of the book and we meant to make this yearbook more meaningful to you by doing so. We hope that we have caught the true spirit of our campus in just these few pages. I hope that in years to come, you will pick up your Laurel and remember some of the scenes that have been captured in it. To the Seniors, I wish you the best of luck, and to the Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen, The end ofthe beginning is near.
