I 3 i CJQDWXW As a superior student, as a loyal alumnus, as a thorough and in- spiring teacher, and as the beloved, dedicated, and competent president, Dr. Hoyt Blackwell has been identified with Mars Hill College since 1919. For twenty-eight years as president he has fully devoted the powers of his mind, his heart, and his hands to the support and development of the College. He has kept faith with the past, the present, and the future - with the students, with his fellow workers, and with the larger constituency of the College. Recognizing that his achievements will be recorded history, that their significance will be Written on the pages of time, and that their meaning will remain inscribed on the tablets of the hearts of those who have known him, the staff has the honor of affectionately dedicating to Dr. Blackwell the Laurel for 1966, in this, the last year of his dis- tinguished service as the president of Mars Hill College. GM S l For many years on the Mars Hill campus the honor clubs have been one of the most important and outstanding extracurricular activities. At monthly meetings the club members are brought up to date with important facts concerning their club's area through films, outside speakers and various other programs. The honor clubs help to give students a better understanding of their studies and their chosen professions. To become a member of an honor club a student must make at least thirty quality points, a B or better in the subject represented by the club and no grade lower than a C in the preceeding semester. This year the history, science, English, religion, business, French, Spanish and music depart- ments have been represented. Only in its third year of existence, the SGA embarked into new fields of endeavor beginning with the orientation of freshmen in September. Following closely was Rat Week climaxed by the Homecoming game and parade. A project initiated last year was again tackled by the SGA this year. The chartered train went to Maryville, Tennessee for a football game, Operation Santa Claus consisted of gifts from Mars Hill College students to soldiers in Viet Nam and a Christmas party for the underprivileged children in the Mars Hill area. This year SGA sponsored a drive to obtain a cannon to signal Lion scores and victories and the goal was tripled. Also, an opinion poll of students and faculty members was administered and results were surprising. Derby Day was launched with many field events and climaxed by a popular concert by students from other colleges, Perhaps the most important action the SGA took this year was joining the Southern Universities Student Government Association, a nationally recognized organization. The joining of SUSGA will enable Mars Hill's SGA to broaden its scope and area of activity in the future. The Hilltop is a bi-weekly publication put out by the students for the students. The paper brings to us the late campus news. lt informs us of coming events on this campus and some events that are taking place on other campuses. We can read in it play-by-play descriptions of the college ballgames, and also what happens in the intra- I mural program. i A collegiate newspaper is a good place to put in some hard work and reap some valuable experience. The people who work on the paper, work hard, and from this work they reap a personal satisfaction in the knowledge that they are bringing to the student body much valuable information. The staff would like to give its special thanks to Mr. Walter Smith for his un- tiring work to help us make this All-American collegiate newspaper possible. - forty-six - i l i l l Y .H L, W, gm-gg' ,--up-mms 1-1,-D...ux..s...........-..--T - 1 Y r l - ,X . , ,D L I. 1 fy ffl' 'f , t- 'f' ffl Jw ' t ' ,l l W., , .-M,.,,A.,!,, . Compiling a book filled with memories which will last a lifetime has been an illusive goal at times, but we on the staff feel this goal has been happily achieved. The extensive work involved in producing such a treasure as this can be known only by those who have had the first-hand experience of participating in it. Hours upon hours have been spent in making pictures, writing copy, putting the right cut- line with the proper photograph and numerous other matters. At times tempers were frayed and deadlines violatedg but when the entire job was finished, there was a feeling of satisfaction in a task successfully completed. We, the staff, deeply appreciate the honor and the encouragement given us by our fellow students and by members of the faculty and staff. We hope all of you will be pleased with this edition. A very special word of thanks goes to Mr. Walter Smith, our advisor, for his time and patience in the publication of this yearbook. . They got off to a slow start by dropping three of their first four outings: but by the end of the season they had jelled, winning seven out of the last 10 games. As a team, the Lions scored at a clip of 81.5 points per game. Fisher, who holds the school's rebounding record, was strong on defense for the Lions. Good turned in quite a few points with his bank shot. Pickard was the team's leading playmaker and scored a little over 20 points per game. Sams, whose hustle re- sulted in quite a few jump balls, was most effective with his outside push shot. Bob and Bill Gibson, in their first year of organized basketball, teamed up for 16 points per game. Their strong point seemed to be rebounding. George Scruggs showed up well on defense, making several crowd-pleasing blocks during the season. Ray Randall, a freshman, turned in several good games. Skip Liles and Ron Taylor, two freshmen guards, showed that they were able to move the ball and score when called upon. They should be assets to the team next season. Wayne Barber, a second semester student, should be a strong rebounder next season. The highlight of the season came when the Lions twice went into overtime against Pikeville, a if small-college power, and won 80-79. The names of 20 Mars Hillians were submitted, and all were chosen by the editors of the publication for inclusion. The Who's VVho publication is a bound volume of biographical sketches on outstanding student leaders at colleges and universities throughout the nation. It is open only to juniors, seniors and graduate studentsg and to be included is considered a high honor. Selection of the Mars Hill nominees was made by an anonymous committee of faculty members appointed by the faculty's committee on academic standing. The candidates, all seniors, were chosen on the basis of campus leadership, promise of future usefulness and academic standing. R 1:31 1,1- !.:1 On November 6, 1965, the hearts of the students and faculty of Mars Hill College were X saddened as they learned oflthe accidentalideath of John B. Edwards. John, as his college friends knew him. was a quiet but fun-loving young man who lived his life to the fullest. I He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. r EDITORS FAREWELL An old era is ending and a new era is beginning, not only for Mars Hill College but also for many students who are leaving this year. To us seniors Mars Hill College will always be dear to our hea1'ts. We will remember her us the place where we made life-long friends and as the place in which we became adults. To those who will be coming back next year we wish the best of luck in the years ahead. VVe hope that Mars Hill will mean as much to you one day as it does to us. In this farewell I would like to thank the adminis- trationg Walter Smith, the Laurel advisor: and you, the students, for your support and encouragement. I hope this yearbook will bring much happiness to you in the years to come. My best wishes always to one and all. 75km . fy -.s.Q!:::. one hundred eighty-five - rw we-n , Autographs Z W rw wwvvfm W 4 1 !!U!1KU!'!VWi'if'w 1lU! iE4h !f ' .3.1.J lk , I ,ern , --. - Y .W . ,.m,w 44.
