When the future will have afforded a perspective for the appraisal of Dr. Blackwell's administration at Mars Hill College, his achievements will loom in the history of the college. When he agreed to direct the enlarge- ment program for the college in 1935, he declared his desire to provide Mars Hill with physical equipment commensurate with its spiritual assets. When he ac- cepted the presidency in 1938, he reiter- ated his purpose. To see how well he has kept his promise, one has only to survey his accomplishments. Nine modern build- ings have been erected and equippedg older buildings have been renovatedg more than a dozen cottages and faculty homes have been acquired: and the campus has been enlarged and extensively landscaped. Dr. Blackwell modestly gives others credit for what has been done. Indeed many have shared his vision and en- thusiasm, although some have been fear- ful, critical. or apathetic. With his judg- ment, industry, integrity, and faith, how- ever, Mars Hill now stands girded to meet the opportunities of the future. -Adapted from an editorial in the College Quarterly by John A. McLeod. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE My thirty-seven years on the Mars Hill campus have been happy and gratifying. To be sure there have been problems to meet and solve, but when I think of our many loyal, alert, eager students I realize that the rewards have been commensurate. A teacher or school administrator can experience no greater joy than that of seeing his pupils grow in knowledge and wisdom. Every student who has studied here in my time has my blessing and my good wishes. I salute the entire college family. Cordially, Hoyt Blackwell, President twelve
