Since 1945 she has striven to establish the ideals of good sportsmanship in campus life and sports. Despite a heavy schedule of classes and related activities, Miss Hart has found time during these years to participate creatively in the life of the community and the program of her church and in several profes- sional organizations. Among these are the North Carolina Athletic and Recreation Federation of tfollegc Wonieli, the physical education section of the North Carolina Education Association and Delta Kappa Gamma, the international sorority of teachers. Her achievements merited for her a place in Who's Who of Ameri- can Women for 1964. It is with pride that the 1965 Laurel staff and the Senior Class dedicate this yearbook to Miss Virginia Hart, teacher, coach, Lion supporter and friend. . I -,l MISS VIRGINIA HART Associate Professor of Physical Education - three - Presenting an entire school year's activities within the pages of a single book is no easy task. Each individual cherishes his own personal memories - moments of praise, disappointment, challenge and victory which occur each day and thus make up the entire school year. The 1965 Laurel staff has tried to capture in the following pages all the various moods of campus life at Mars Hill V rx fx un....3 College during the last year. It is the sincere desire -3 ' - ,V of all who helped make this book possible that the W sounds of dear ol' Alma Mater will echo again and again as you recall the school year 1964-65 at Mars Hill. When the future will have afforded a perspective for the appraisal of Dr. Blackwell's administration at Mars Hill College, his achievements will loom in the history of the college. When he agreed to direct the enlarge- ment program for the college in 1935, he declared his desire to provide Mars Hill with physical equipment commensurate with its spiritual assets. When he ac- cepted the presidency in 1938, he reiter- ated his purpose. To see how well he has kept his promise, one has only to survey his accomplishments. Nine modern build- ings have been erected and equippedg older buildings have been renovatedg more than a dozen cottages and faculty homes have been acquired: and the campus has been enlarged and extensively landscaped. Dr. Blackwell modestly gives others credit for what has been done. Indeed many have shared his vision and en- thusiasm, although some have been fear- ful, critical. or apathetic. With his judg- ment, industry, integrity, and faith, how- ever, Mars Hill now stands girded to meet the opportunities of the future. -Adapted from an editorial in the College Quarterly by John A. McLeod. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE My thirty-seven years on the Mars Hill campus have been happy and gratifying. To be sure there have been problems to meet and solve, but when I think of our many loyal, alert, eager students I realize that the rewards have been commensurate. A teacher or school administrator can experience no greater joy than that of seeing his pupils grow in knowledge and wisdom. Every student who has studied here in my time has my blessing and my good wishes. I salute the entire college family. Cordially, Hoyt Blackwell, President twelve DR. These clubs seek to lead their members into a deeper understanding of life and their part in it, both on campus and after graduation. Students are eligible for membership by having a B in the course which the club represents and by having nothing' less than a C in all other subjects. Represented in the Honor Clubs on campus this year were the social science, English, business, foreign languages, religion, music, and science departments. Due to a lack of in- terest and for the first time in several years, the German Club was not represented in the Honor Clubs. These goals have been exemplified in numerous annuals through the years, but it is the desire of each staff that the book they produce be the best yet, It is with this objective that the 1965 Laurel staff has sought to produce this year's book. The long hours spent in producing such a store of memories can only be known by those who have a first hand experience by working on the staff. However, even with this abundance of work and what seems to be a never ending task, when the final copy is in and all is done, it is evident that it is a most noble task. Although an improvement over last year, the 3-5 record compiled by the Lions for their 1964 football season does not tell of the sacrifices made by each player to bring the fans another thrilling season. Although Mars Hill came out on the short end of a -12-12 score. the statistics brought out the fact that they yielded only 57 yards rushing to the host team. Catawba cashed in on several breaks, consisting of three fumbles, a costly penal- ty and a blocked punt. to run up the total on their side of the scoreboard. Roger Whittley, Jim Few, Harry Sprouse, and Lar- ry Phillips did a good job offensively while Bo Dishman. Jim Epps, and Bill Lewis took the honors on defense. The following week Mars Hill broke in- to the win column, under the direction of quarterbacks Jack Reece and Bill Smarr, by defeating Marion Institute before the home crowd. The game's only touchdown in the Lions 7-0 victory came after Tom Nix re- covered a Marion fumble. Several plays later Harry Sprouse took the ball in for the score and Bill Smith booted the extra point. Boyd Perry, Sprouse, and Roger Whittley did a good job of running the ball while Bill Dyar, J. C. Moss, Doug Echols, Ron Mc- Craw, Jim Epps, Bo Dishman, and Tom Nix stood out on defense. Next the Lions traveled to Barnesville. Georgia, where they came from behind to down Gordon Military College 10-7, in a steady downpour of rain. Bill Smarr carried the ball for the Lions' only touchdown fol- lowing a 40-yard run due to the speed of Sprouse and a key block by Jim Epps. With a little more than five minutes remaining, Henry Zion booted a 23-yard field goal to wrap up the victory. Kees Auer along with Echols, Epps. Dishman, and Lewis. turned in a good game on defense. To make it three wins in a row, Mars Hill handed Newport News Apprentice a stunning 25-0 setback before a capacity homecoming crowd. Jimmy Few turned in two touchdowns in the first quarter, but the conversions failed. Following a touchdown run by Dyar and an extra point by Smith, the score stood at 19-0. A pass from Reece to Blevins was good for a 25-yard touch- down. Defense was outstanding and re- serves Gerald Lankford, Don Robinson, and M. O. Brinkley saw plenty of action. The defense was magnificant as Mars Hill held the high- scoring Scots to a 6-0 final score. The Lions threatened several times on offense. but were unable to score. Danny Shook shared signal-calling duties with seniors Jack Reece and Bill Smarr, and Boyd Perry ran well on offense. Ends Dave Livengood and Tom Nix showed up well on defense. and along with hard tackles from Kees Auer, Bill Lewis, Bo Dishman, and Jim Epps, the Lions played an out- standing game. For the seniors on the team this was the last game they would play for Mars Hill, but the rest of the team gained much experience for next season. The Lions posted a 10-10 record for the season while setting three new records which could easily stand for many years to come. The 130-78 victory over Lee College broke the record for the highest game total since moving into senior college com- petition. A 123-99 victory over Emory and Henry earlier in the season was the previous high. Bill Loven set a new school record by turning in 50 points against Emory and Henry. Newcomer, Duke Fisher, broke the rebounding record of 18 set by Hoby Harmon last year, by pulling down 25 re- bounds against Wilmington College. Graduation, among other things, resulted in the loss of most of the starters from the 1964 team, but ap- proximately thirty-five prospects turned out in an effort to make this year's team. The few returning from last year's team included Don Love, Dave Livengood, Duffy Wood, Ken Maynor, Fremont Vess, Larry Burgess, Charlie Smith, and Mickey Radcliff. Adding strength to the returnees were several top prospects, namely, Jim Few, Johnny McLeod, Andy Good, Roger Banks, Danny Shook, Bill Dyer, Tom Nix, Don Chiles, Ron Falk, Tom Worsham, and Dennis Adams. Bad weather kept practice inside for the first two weeks, and slowed progress in selecting the team from the candidates. As the annual went to press, Coach Henderson stated that with a full week of good weather before the first game, all indications were that the baseball team would continue in their winning ways. ' 1965 GOLF This year brought the return of golf to Mars Hill as a varsity sport. Golf is no stranger to the campus as Mars Hill has had several good teams in past years. The team was inactive in 1964, but Coach Ron Bromley reorganized it under his direction this vear. As the annual went to press it was too early for the team to have been selected. Coach Bromley stated that the team would be chosen by means of an elimination tournament in early April. He said that several boys had already shown an interest in the team and a schedule was set up. lThe boys pictured below are the ones who had shown interest when the annual went to pressl, Home matches were to be played on the Beaver Lake course in Asheville. A track team was not organized this year, but it will return in the spring of 1966. It was not through any lack of interest on the part of the coaches or the team that this decision was made, as several boys had already begun to work out. The new quarter-mile track was not ready to be used this year, but plans were being made for several of the boys to represent the school at relays being held at other schools. This year the selection was conducted slightly different. The faculty named who they considered most worthy of this honor and then the senior class voted from a list of fifteen names. The seven stu- dents on this and the following three pages are Mars Hill's top seniors for 1964-65. QQ! The Mars Hill College I.ion has shown you the various phases ot' activities and people who were at Mars Hill during the 1964-G5 school year. Since I was not appointed editor until second semester. the staff had a rushed task ot' gathering all the informa- tion to he included in the 1965 Laurel, if it had not been for the cooperation and helpfulness of Mr. Smith. this task would have lween a much more difficult one. A special word ot' thanks also goes to Tracy Heath for his outstand- ing work in managing the Miss Laurel pageant: to Mr. Johnson for his excellent class and feature photographyg to Mr. Griffith for his prompt and courteous selection ot' Miss Laurel 1965: to the engrayers and printers: to the secretaries in the Public Relations office for their coopera- tive spiritg and to each individual member of the 1965 Laurel staff. May you look to this source often in years to come and recall the various moods which you felt, along with the feelings of your classmates and teachers, during this year. -:. - one hundred eighty-seven THE 1965 LAUREL DESIGNED AND PHOTOENGRAVED BY ROANOKE ENGRAVING COMPANY, ROANOKE, VIRGINIA PRINTED BY COMMONWEALTH PRESS, INC., RADFORD, VIRGINIA - one hundred eighty-eight - Autographs Autographs Autographs Autographs L I n L r w 1 1 I?
