Class :md Fe:1lu1'es l'Iwtfsg1'upher - three - FOREWORD When the sun comes over the mountains, it ushers in a new day to be filled with new experiences, new heights of learning, new goals. It brings with it new hopes for a happy and profitable sojourn. All the days of the 1962-63 school year have been doubly new for us at Mars Hill, for we have been in the midst of a great change. The whole year may be seen as a new clay for the college. Our morning suns have brought rays of improvement and challenge. The transition from junior to senior college status has been made this year with a minimum of disruption and a maximum of progress. We have grown older, wiser with the fulfillment of some of our fondest aspirations, and closer through our common efforts at learning and living. We are Mars Hill and we pride ourselves on having helped usher in this new day - this new era. The 1963 Laurel is presented to all of us as an enduring symbol of the work and achievements realized in this segment of our lives. Each page should remind us of pleasant times and real accomplishments and encourage us to higher goals. The staff is pleased to publish this book of memoirs as a reminder of our part in helping usher in a new day at Mars Hill College. - four - TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication Aclministrotion-Foculty Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Feotures Activities Music Religion Athletics Directories -f' -. in ' 'ivmzxfkt 1 'Pun X3 ,ma '. Mr. John Lackey, Director 1963 'Miss Laureln Contest Mars Hill College Mars Hill, North Carolina My dear John: You honored me with one of the most pleasant but one of the most difficult assignments that I have ever been called upon to perform, the selection of Whiss Laurel of 1963' from the group of seven finalists. Mars Hill College, its faculty and its student body, could be justly proud of any one of these beautiful young ladies as its HNiss Laurel of l963.' I trust that no one from this group will feel that my selection detracts in the least from her own individual charmsg but you have ordered me to select one, not seven, and I obey orders. It is my great honor to announce with extreme pleasure my selection as Wziss Laurel of 1963,H Miss Mary Horton. Hay her reign be long, happy, exciting but peaceful, a period of her life to be remembered during many years to come. With deepest appreciation, Most sincerely, a-w..e-We, John E. The four- year competitors proved tough but the fighting Lions, guid- ed by veteran head coach Don Henderson and newcomer, line coach Haskell Ezell and by co-captains Ron Henderson and Buddy Windle, roared to a 4-3-0 season. Shaky at the dawn but hot in the middle of the day, the Lions lost their opener to a powerful Maryville CTenn.l squad, 0-21, and dropped the second game to Lees-McRae, 6-20. Then they began to roll. Center Larry Joe Phillips was selected as Best Line- manf' and Windle, Ron Henderson and Terry Postell were chosen tri-captains for next season. These and several others are worthy of special mention. Always a threat at left halfback, VVindle contributed two beautiful long runs and caught a pass for long yardage. Postell and Scott Conner, who shared the right halfback duties, were both threats as pass receivers and excelled on defense. Fullback Larry Honeycutt, one of the hardest runners around, chipped in several long-run TD's. Quarterback Jack Reece called fine games and accounted for the most points, 24. Ends Boyd Perry and Don Martin were good receivers and also stood out on defense. Martin booted 7 through the up- rights on extra point attempts. Laudable play by Henderson and two other guards, Jerry Chandler and Spencer Penlandg by de- fensive end Dave Livengoodg and by tackles J. C. Moss, C. S. Auer, Jack Ingle and Bo Dishman also deserves mention, does the punting of specialist Harry Briggs. A word of appreciation to managers Jerry Strong, Don Martin and Jimmy Alexander is also in order.
