Colonel John Glenn's orbital flight back in February accentuated the limitless opportunities that will be ours. Scientists and mathematicians are in the spot- light, and everyone is looking ahead. Sometimes, how- ever, it is refreshing to pause and to look back, to reflect on the experiences we have had, to recall good friends and happy times, to count the blessings of a pleasant era in our lives, and to recommit ourselves to the noble callings we have heard. The 1962 Laurel records the people and the events that have made up the 1961-62 school year. Study itcarefully, preserve it and someday - five, ten, fifteen, twenty, thirty years and perhaps a planet or two away - when you sit down with it for a few moments it will bring back fond memories. - four - TABLE OF CONTENTS Ilecliczitiim Al1I'I11I11St1'il114D11-FilClll1y .... . OUTSTANDING CAMPUS A spark of creativity sets a leader apart from the group, and a dedication to service gives him Cor herj the opportunity to lead. These are qualities that distinguish dozens of Mars Hillians. Charles B. Carver, Editor The 1962 LAUREL Mars Hill College Mars Hill, North Carolina Dear Charles: Selecting a HNiss Laurel of 1062H proved to be quite a challenge to me, albeit a challenge I thorouuhly en- joyed. I have, after much deliberation, selected Miss Mary Lee Hurt, who, it seems to me, has a great deal of vitality and zest for life in addition to charm and beauty. However, may I hasten to add, the selection was not an easy one. I selected two girls, naming one of them runner upg then, I asked lrs. Fletcher to pick two. She chose the same two but reversed the order. We then called in our teen-age daughter Margaret for consultation, and finally the three of us azreed upon Miss Hurt. As you can see, it was not any easy task since all of the girls are very attractive and very beautiful. CARVER Editor-in-Chief Copy-fitting layout, and deadlines become second nature to staff members as the dead-line season drew near. lliany things Went into making this book something for you to treasure in years to come. Ignoring homework until the last minute, many hours Were spent drawing layouts, writing copy, taking pictures, and finally proofing each item. We naturally had our difficulties and failures scat- tered here and there, but the success of the annual far' out- weighed all the troubles. To Mr. Walter Smith goes a great deal of gratitude for all the time he has given to help make the LAUREL what it is. We would also like to express our thanks to the members of the faculty and administration who helped us. WALTER P. Thus competition in the junior college field came to an end in a blaze of glory. Not long after the end of the season the administration of the College and the mem- bers of the physical education department faculty agreed on a continuation of the full intercollegiate sports program as Mars Hill becomes a senior college. The Lions will play as an independent during the 1962-63 school year but eventually hope to seek senior college conference affiliation. , As the 1961 football season began, 11 players from the '60 squad returned to form the nucleus of the 1961 team: linemen Richard Famiglietti, Sonny Rice, Jerry Chandler, Larry Bruce, Buddy Ware, John Baskin, Barrow Carter, and Lindsay Dean and backs Larry Honeycutt, Scott Conner and Bob McClure. The coaches soon were beset by problems as freshman signal caller Mick Ottley and big fullback Jerry Williams withdrew from school and first team guard Jerry Chandler was lost for the season with a broken collarbone. With skill and persistance, however, the coaches shaped a smooth team. The offensive attack was spearheaded by co-captains Honeycutt and Conner, who got more-than-adequate help from frosh quarter- backs Harry Sprouse and Jack Reece and fullback Gary Hammonds. The defensive wall was led by five big freshman tackles, Bo Dishman, J. C. Moss, Jim Epps, Neal Gruetter, and Ron Stewart. To bolster the interior line, end' Ware and tackle Stewart were switched to guard. Wingmen Bruce and Carter, linebackers Rice, Famiglietti, and Bill Lineberry and center Larry Phillips rounded out the team. Led by the defensive efforts of Bruce and Rice, the Lions tied power- ful Ferrum 0-0 in the opener and then posted four straight wins: 12-0 over Lees-McRae, a forfeit by Wingate, 13-12 decision over Gardner-Webb, and a Honeycutt-led homecoming romp over Lees-McRae 21-O. A 6 to 14 loss to Wingate, scoreless tie with Marion Institute, and a 6-27 loss to Gardner-Webb ended the season. WAYNE MERCHANT, BOB JOHNSTON, RALPH SNIDER Managers - one hundred and forty-six - Mars Hill dominated the All-Conference team, furnishing halfback Honeycutt, guard Rice and ends Bruce and Raniiglietti. In addition, Honeycutt was named on one of the junior college All-American teams. When awards were made at the animal ban- quet honoring' varsity athletes, Honeycutt again took honors, being named Most Valuable Player. Bruce received the trophy as Best Defensive per'- former and Conner was selected Best Offensive Player. When it's pigskin time again this fall, many of the players will be back for a third year. A pair of All-Conference performers on the 1960 squad have been named co-captains of the 1962 squad, line-ramining' halfback Buddy Windle and hard-charging guard Ron Henderson. .
