FORE ORD The following views will picture the magnificent scenery of the mountain setting and the modern physical plant of Mars Hill College. The 1961 LAUREL then recalls the familiar faces of the Administration, the Faculty, and the Student Body as the paper comes off the press with the news of the year's events. An enrollment of 1200 men and women from various parts of the nation and world gathered at Mars Hill in the fall of 1960 to participate in activities as varied as the personalities of the students. The featured events - Homecoming, Society Anniversaries, B.S.U. Parties, May Day, and Graduation - provided the headlines of the yearg the Classes and Athletics completed the news. Ir., is now a memher of the surgical staff ol' St. .Ioseph's, Memorial Mission, and Aston Park hos- pitals in Asheville. Dr. Chap- inan is a civic and church lead- er and has published several pa- pt-rs on general and thoracic surgery. Presently pastor of the Knoll- wood Baptist Church in IVins- ton-Salein, Dr. lack Noffsinger was awarded .1 citation for meri- torious service for his work as a Navy chaplain in the Iwo lima campaign. .X graduate of the Colgate - Rochester IJ i x in i t y School and of the University of Rit I nnonrl, Dr. lack was I 1 I . .. .... .l,c...A..hs,. vill eine ek lg was active in BSU sitv work, and served as a summer missionary to Hawaii in 1958. He is a foreign volunteer now studying at Southeastern Semi- nary in XVake Forest. The only woman on the Fo- cus Week teain is Mrs. Cathar- ing Bahner. who tc-aches seventh grade English, is a hoard mem- ber for Carver School. South- western, and New Orleans sem- inaries. She works extensively in summer camps and with col- lege students. Mr. Charles Bryan, a Texan, is the Southern Baptist field representative for the Bahamas, Venezuela, Colom- bia, Ecuador, and Peru. 'Yo vp the audi- torium was beyond control, they concentrated their efforts in pre- venting the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings. The fire totally destroyed the fifty-five year old building, caus- ing an estimated loss of 361000. Included in the estimate were three pianos and movie projection equipment. At approximately 10:15 p.m., fire was discovered in the base- ment of Spilman dormitory for boys, located across the street from the auditorium.
