C. ai, Jr. s Hill College I Dear Mr. Shari All the photographs you sent me indicate lovely young ladies. lt is difficult and unfair to judge beauty from pictures. However, l have selected the one who appears to me to have the best features and brightness of personality. Ylease know that l consider them all quite pretty, but the first is outstanding to me. X l am out of New York at the moment and have no photograph of myself handy. as to my biographical material - l received a . Master of Fine Arts from Yale University in theatre production in l95O, came to New York where l worked briefly in television and then in the Broadway theatre as stage manager. 1 am now W production supervisor of all shows done by the David Merrick organization. We have five currently on Broadway - GYPSY, DESTRY RIDES AGAlN, LA PLUME, TAKE ME ALONG, SUZIE HONG Qwhich is in Boston HO15, and THE GOOD SOUP Qto open in Januaryd. . M As such l supervise casting, the technical end, coordinate 1 between director, dance director, musical dept. and in general I represent the producer. Once the show is opened it is my responsi- bility to check it, try to keep it in shape, make cast replace- ments, do second companies, etc., etc., etc. - all very frantic F but interesting. ou smoke on campus My very best wishes to you. Editor-in-Chief The curtain has finally closed and the LAUREL has gone to press. We've lost friends, sleep, good grades, and our tempers. The long nights of work, days Wasted chasing stu- dents and faculty members to have their pictures made, and the anxious hours spent contemplating the consequences of not meeting the deadline have passed with the brushing of the curtain on the floor of the stage. The staff, though small, has enjoyed its work. We especial- ly thank Mr. Walter P. Smith for his fine cooperation and help as photographer. The staff also gives a special Word of thanks to our advisor, Mr. Robert Chapman, for his able ability to solve all our problems and sign all our bills. And to those of the student body who wish to utter various grievances, we can only say: t'To err is humang to forgive, divine. TIM GORDON WALTER P. The performance had begun. Yes, another performance had begun at Mars Hill College, and as all performances it required planning, supervision, and practice. Every two weeks a rigid schedule compelled the actors to study their lines, revise the copy, and put on the finishing touches for the grande finale. The steady rhythm of the typewriters, staff meetings, nosey newspaper reporters, scraps of yellow paper, ads, telephone calls, scotch tape, headlines, long hours, and the five o'clock Friday deadline all lead up to the climax - another edition safe in the hands of the reader. All too soon the stage lights dim and all the 1959-60 editions of the HILLTOP are only history - written proof of the past performances on the M. H. C. campus. This placed Mars Hill in a tie with Wingate College for first place in the WCJCC standings. The Lions, coached by Don Henderson, de- fied all pre-season expectations by downing tough Wingate in the opening game, 6-3. Buddy Windel and Richard Russo sparked Mars Hill's offensive attack, while David Rutherford and Ground- hog Thompson looked good on defense. Both Windle and Russo will be returning next year. Russo is an All-State high school player from New Jersey. The following week at Banner Elk, Mars Hill outscored the Lees-McRae Bobcats 20-12. Co- Captain Allen Fish scored twice in the third period to pace the Lions. Burt Burchfield and Larry Picklesimer alternated at the quarterback slot, handling the offensive attack beautifully. Mars Hill journeyed to Staunton, Virginia the next week, and was soundly trounced by Staunton Military Academy. Ron Denton scored Mars Hill's only touchdown early in the fourth period. Avenging this defeat, Mars Hill retaliated by downing the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, 6-0. Gard- ner-Webb had previously been ranked third among junior college powers in the South. Hefty tackles, Clay Jones, 222, and John Arkansas, 225, were the mainstays for Mars Hill in the line. The game developed into a defensive battle, with Mars Hill's only score coming in the final period on a pass from All-American quarterback, Larry Picklesimer, to All-Conference end, Ford Parker. The Lions soundly laced Lees-McRae in their next outing, 35-O, but suffered several injuries that hampered the Lions for the remainder of the season. Mars Hill lost the three remaining games of the season to Wingate, Carson-Newman, and Gardner-Webb. Coach Don Henderson says of this ball club, I have had better records and higher scoring teams, but I have never had a harder hitting team. They play clean, hard-knocking football. Team Elected Outstanding Members Quarterback Larry Picklesimer, sophomore from Brevard, was chosen Mars Hill's most valu- able football player for the '59 season. The selection was made by his teammates. Pickle- simer was a star for four years at Brevard, and was selected to the Junior College All-American team for his performance this year. Besides be- ing an outstanding quarterback, Larry was also a mainstay on defense. Best offensive player went to Buddy Windle. Windle hails from Loudon, Tennessee -M the best town in the best state in the union - according' to Buddy and his coliort. Groundhog Thomp- son. Ford Parker was awarded the best blocker award. Parker was outstanding on offense all year, and he surely would have gotten the best pass receiving award, had one been given. David Rutherford. defensive captain and a Hoss on defense, was elected by his teammates as the best defensive player. David surely de- serves all the honor bestowed upon him. for he was a tremendous ballplayer. Lions Placed Five on All-Conference Team Coaches Don Henderson, Fred Dickerson of Lees-McRae, Bill Connell of Wingate, and Norman Harris of Gardner-VVebb selected five of Mars Hill's gridders to the WCJCC All-Confer- ence Team. Nine of the players were furnished by Wingate and Mars Hill. Conference co- champions. The coaches were unanimous in their selection of Gardner-Webb's Ed Lohr of Rich- mond, Virginia, for one of the tackle spots: Win- gate's Al Frieze of Concord and Mars Hill's Lowery Worley of Marshall for the guards: and VVingate's Marvin Crowder of Clarksville, Vir- ginia, for one of the halfback posts. A tie be- tween Mars Hill's Ford Parker of Asheville and Wingate's Leonard Ward of Charlotte for one of the end positions produced the 12-man team. The other wingman is Lees-McRae's Gary Thomp- son. The remainder of the team includes Mars Hill's Clay Jones of Greenville, South Carolina, tackle: Wingate's J. P. Dowd of Bennetsville, South Carolina, center, Mars Hill's Larry Pickle- simer of Brevard and Buddy Windle at quarter- back and halfback, respectively: and Lees- McRae's Terry Fostell of Andrews at fullback. Honorable mention was made of Mars Hill's center, Stanley Lawhon of Albemarle. Mars Hill had a number of classy ballplayers but just couldn't find the combination to keep pace with the tough conference teams. The only win in regular season conference play was recorded against Spartanburg Junior College, winning by one point in overtime. The game revealed some flashes of brilliance on the part of the Lion cagers. During the five minute overtime, the score changed hands repeatedly, with Mars Hill pulling the game out of the fire on a jump shot by Bill Young with eleven seconds remaining. Young col- lected 23 points in a sterling performance in which he scored six points in the overtime period. Dave Hughes, freshman from Franklin, North Carolina, showed his ability on several different occasions. Hughes bucketed 17 points against Hiwassee to pace the Lions to a non-conference victory. Both of these boys will be returning next year and should provide a nucleus for a winning team. Kelley John- son, Charles Clifton, and Bob Holsten will also be returning next season. Johnson, 6' 4 , 200 pound center from Hayes, should provide plenty of com- petition for opposing pivot men next year. Clarence Maxey, 6', forward from Norfolk, Virginia, will be returning for another year, along with West Hargett, 6' 1 , from Charlotte. Both should contribute greatly to the success of the team.
