OUR PRESIDENT AND HIS MESSAGE Mars Hill College operates for its students. It is therefore inspiring to observe the growth and development of the students during the period of their study here. Evidences of their growth and development are revealed in dignity, poise. and maturing scholarship. The Mars Hill Baptist Church and other churches in our larger communities play an important role in what is achieved from year to year. The students are to be congratulated upon the quality and attractiveness of the LAUREL. Cordially, HOYT BLACKWELL - ten - 4 I I I E... M . I I I an-I I I 1.3: I I I I I I I WILLIAM L LYNCH, TILM. Minus the services of many veteran performers due to graduation, Coach Don Henderson's fighting charges faced the season with visions of better days ahead. Frequently throughout the schedule, the young players were called upon to carry much of the burden. The earlier contests served as a preview of the power Coach Henderson can assemble on the football field in the future. Another host of veterans will leave the campus at the end of this sum- mer and their absence will be noted on the field, but, barring injuries, everything should go well. Evidenced by the eager participation and sincerity of the boys in the spring training, Mars Hill can look forward to a bright future. The young movement will be a year older - with its share of experience. On to another Mars Hill touchdown. Coach Henderson gives the team some last minute instructions. The annual Athletic Banquet of Mars Hill College got into full swing with the theme Gold in Them Thar Hills. Mr. Vernon Wood was Master of Ceremonies and introduced several speakers who were members of the faculty, including our president, Dr. Hoyt Blackwell, who welcomed the members of each sport team. Coach Don Henderson presented the coveted awards to Gene Hall, Conrad Keesecker, and Jerry Brown. Conrad Kecsecker receives Best Blocker award from Coach Henderson at the Athletic Banquet. Gardner-Webb, Lees-McRae, and Bluefield to open the season activity. The Lions tied for fourth place in the Western Carolinas Junior College Conference with a record of 5-9. In the first round of the conference tournament at Sprice Pine, Mars Hill was defeated by Wingate, the club which eventually captured the four-day event, 36-66. The local five treated the campus to an exciting brand of basketball, using a fast-breaking attack which netted an average of 72.5 points per contest. Mars Hill reached a seasonal high on December 8 as they downed Gardner-Webb in McConnell gymnasium, 107-97. Coach Edwards' crew was led in scoring and floor play by Asheville's Mickey Hoyle, who averaged 20.5 markers per game and who was a unanimous all-conference choice for the second straight year. Hoyle's personal high for the season was a 41 point effort against Gardner-Webb. Ray DeHart, a freshman from Hickory, was second in individual point totals with an average of 15.4 per outing, and Jim Alexander of Lynchburg, Virginia, was third with an 11.4 mark. Others seeing consider- able duty were Burt Birchfield. Bob Reed, Dan Waddell, Clifton McClure, and Maxie Welch, who ioined the team at mid-term. The Skylight by Elizabeth Watson was presented at the 1958 Commencement. The play dealt with the early struggle of George Washington Carver to secure an education. Kaufman and Hart's hilarious George Washington Slept Here was presented by the faculty and students during the summer session and repeated during orientation. George Bernard ShaW's Caesar and Cleo- patrau was the major fall production. The Other Wise Man by Henry Van Dyke was presented in chapel before the Christmas holidays. l George Washington Slept Here. r- vu-I I 1 I ' f 1 ivy. . I , 3.95.51 fvggbwwx ,. Any of the contestants could justly warrant the honor. My choice is based upon beauty, personality, and congeniality, so far as photographs permit. Your college is fortunate to have so many young ladies who possess obvious charm. It has been my pleasure to meet them vicariously. May I wish you continued success with your yearbook, the LAUREL.
