N' X UUR PRESIDENT Hllll HIS HIESSHBE The invigorating climate which has pervaded the Mars Hill College campus for more than one hundred years has been produced by the un- impeachable academic and spiritual integrity of the college. The quality of education required for the space age will call for an environment such as this. There will he no person or group of persons more responsible for this at Mars Hill than will the students themselves. I have no lack of confidence that they will meet this responsibility in full measure. It is a high privilege to be an active member of the Mars Hill family. Cordially, HOYT BLACKWELL ROBERT L. HOLT. EMMETT SAMS Class Sponsors We Sophomores returned UNTO THESE HILLS in September with renewed determination and a clearer con- ception of purpose. The months at Mars Hill which passed so slowly at the beginning of the freshman year began to race by. New responsibilities and offices, more specialized courses, and the necessity of transferring to a senior col- lege served to intensify a new seriousness of action. We will never forget the challenge to plain living and high thinking which has been instilled within us during our months among these hills. fi Class Officers: Fick Guin, President: Bea Champion. AND MRS, FRED CORBIN Class Sponsors The members of the Freshman Class came UNTO THESE HILLS in September with many varied expecta- tions - bubbling enthusiasm, shaky uneasiness, and oc- casional overconfidence. In spite of such events as Sput- nik and the Asiatic flu, these new Mars Hillians adapted themselves to college life with remarkable ease. Confi- dence and complacency characterize these little mountain lions as they select and track their 'tpreyf' or goal in life. They are learning of the strength and peace of lifting up one's eyes unto the hills and seeking for the higher things in life. R-In sf- C? CLASS OFFICERS - Seated: Sandra Rogers. DAVIS BILL PREVOST, JR. Editor-in-Chief Business Manager The story of the making of the 1958 LAUREL would make dull read- ing for everyone except the staff members. However, the job itself has been anything but dull and uninteresting: it has been an experience that each of us will never forget. At times it has been trying and discourag- ing, especially when we had a deadline, two tests, and an English paper due on the same day. It has had its more enjoyable times with the staff meetings conducted in the cafeteria and soda shop. By working as a team, we came to know and appreciate each other. Each of us became staff members because we were interested in the work and because we wanted to make a tangible contribution to our school and to our classmates. Our goal has been to produce the best yearbook possible, to give you your money's worth. We have not been alone in our work. Our advisor, Miss Martha Linney, spent as much time in the LAUREL office as she did in her own. Mr. Chapman's advice was invaluable. Walter Smith, Director of Publicity, was always available to run all over campus taking pictures. Kermit Hunter, author of the Cherokee drama, UNTO THESE HILLS, provided us with the idea to build our book around the beauty of our surroundings and the Christian inspiration that comes with the beauty of nature. The staff wishes to thank these people for their skill- ful and patient assistance. We, the students of Mars Hill College, do hereby establish this organiza- tion that through it we may do our part to spread the gospel of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, unto the uttermost parts of the earth, God being our helper. These words in the prologue to the Constitution of the Mission Council of Mars Hill College explain the sole purpose of our organization. Their only confer- ence loss was to Gardner-Webb, 14-0. The Lions had just re- turned from a battle with the flu and were suffering from a lack of practice. Earlier in the year the Lions tied with the Wingate Bulldogs, 7-7. The Lions fought through mud to win their first game of the season by shutting out Ferrum, 16-0. In defense of their conference title, the Lions beat conference team Lees-McRae with a third period field goal to make the final score 17-14. Then Gardner-Webb gave the Lions their first defeat by a 14-0 score. The Lions dropped their second defeat to Wingate, 13-6. The Carson-Newman College Jayvees turned three Lions' fumbles into touchdowns as they shut out the Lions in their last game of the season, 25-0. The games with Marion Military Institute and the Appala- chian Jayvees were cancelled due to the flu, and the Carson- Newman game was postponed from September 27 until Novem- ber 15. The Lions ended the season with a 3-3-1 record. Tackle Buck Lyda and end John Wright were named to the All-Conference Squad. Both men played for the Lions last year and showed fine performances this year. Other returnees were guards Lawrence Ponder and Tommy Bell and halfbacks Red Sudderth, Ken Horton, and Ed Morton. Linemen Claude Sitton, Wayne Whitson, Judd Force, Dick Kirby, and Jim Harris saw action with the Lions again this year. Some of the new boys on the squad this year were Russell Bowman, Clifton McClure, Bill Self, Gerald Lankford, Jim Langford, Hack Ezell, Conrad Keesecker, Jerry Ball, Gene Hall, and Ross Knowlton. Mac Thacker, a transfer from Fishburne Military Academy, was also valuable to the Lions this year. The home team scored fifteen points in the overtime to win 71-62. The Lions played one of their best games and romped the Spartanburg Pioneers, 91-65. The 91 points was the largest total of the season for them. Another win for the Lions was a second half comeback against Gardner-Webb. With ten minutes to play, the Lions overcame a twelve-point difference to win, 55-51. The Lions entered the conference tournament with a 5-5 record. Their record for conference play was 4-5, and they held down fourth position in the conference standings. The Bull- dogs of Gardner-Webb downed the Lions in the first game of tournament play. Going into the tournament, Mickey Hoyle and John Wright led the scoring for the Lions. Hoyle, a freshman from Asheville, poured in 198 markers for an average of 16.5 per game. Captain Wright, a sophomore from Bristol, scored 182 points and had a 15.2 average per game. Also seeing action for the Lions were Mac Caldwell. Tommy Sherman, Ellis Murphy. and Mac Thacker. Carroll Wright and Wayne Whitson left the Lions at the end of the first semester. Top Row: Mickey Hoyle, Louis Burch, Mac Thacker, Charles Put- nam, Harry Caddell.
