The warm May day sun shown brightly down as the cool spring breeze rustled pra- grams over the sudden hush of the expectant spectators. With the first strains of the processional, all eyes turned to watch the lovely and smiling attendants in pastel shades of scal- loped eyelet argandy with bouquets of summer flowers in their hands descend the amphitheatre steps to take their places at the Queen's throne. Wearing a frothy dress of pale blue, Maid of Honor Gaynelle Chandler, began her slow descent. As the strains of the processional swelled, beautiful Queen Sarah Thomas, resplendent in white taffeta, tulle, and lace with calla lilies in her arms went down to receive her crown from King Marion Powell. Ellen Sprinkle became a witch and Carolyn Anderson donned the clothes of the boy Hansel with lris Summers playing his sister Gretel as the famous Humperdinck operetta Hansel and Gretel was presented for the pleasure af the Queen. This is the story of a poor broom-maker and his wife who live in a lonesome cottage with their children. The father and mother go to the village to sell brooms leaving the children at home to work. They go to room through the woods to fill their baskets with straw- berries, when eventide finds them bewildered in the darken- ing forest haunted by fairies and witches. Day breaks as the children awake to find a beautiful little house built of all manner of good things to eat. There were clever antics by the gingerbread men and graceful dancing onthe part of the fairies, Laurels to Coach Virginia Hart and her as- sistants for their superb pro- duction .... A thing of beauty is a joy forever. y 3.
