OUR IMPRESARIQ Dr. Hoyt Blackwell rose from the rank of section leader to become our impresario in 1938. When Dr. R. L. Moore felt the need to lay down his baton after forty-one trying but magnificent years since the symphony had what might be termed its second beginning near the close of the nineteenth century, the Board of Trustees unanimously selected the younger Blackwell, who for several years had been one of the most celebrated players, to take his place on the podium. The campaign to put the bountiful aesthetic and materialistic values of the Sym- phony before the public had already begun, and when the new impresario lifted the baton, he realized that the stage was much too inadequate to accommodate the instrumentalists and permit the resonance which was produced to reach the audience with maximum force. The symphony was small and even though it was well balanced, more players were needed to complete the many sections. But there was little room for them until physical facilities were improved. Since the players come from distant counties. cities, and even states, and are required to spend years in intensive practice before appearing in public for concert, excellent living accommodations had to be provided for them. Our energetic im- 'presario saw that this was done. Two new dormitories were built for girls, a building containing numerous rooms for practicing the scientific approach to the study of the symphony, and a modern cafeteria were erected while the instrumentalists practiced and strove for perfec- tion. Our most urgent need is a concert hall with provisions for all types of productions by the full symphony. We are conhdent that it will come in the near future. Our impresario is determined that our symphony shall grow and with it the soft Zephyr- like harmonies and the majestic chords that compel an audience to sit in its presence. Behind his lively baton stands our impresario directing us, in the words of William Henry Channing, To live content with small meansg to seek elegance rather than luxuryg and refinement rather than fashion, to be worthy, not respectableg and wealthy, not richg to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act franklyg to listen to stars and birds. to babes and sages, with open heartg to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasion, hurry neverg in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious grow up through the common. This is our symphony. 10
