The music of our college times has risen and fallen, each part blending with the rest to make our days here complete. The stall has tried to capture in these pages the melodies which the plain living and high thinking of Mars Hill have given to those of whom it has become a part-melodies which have made of our lives a symphony. Lum Buowx Wr:1.l,s MRS. GI,Anu's BROWN Wllsm OUR IMPRESARIQ Dr. Hoyt Blackwell rose from the rank of section leader to become our impresario in 1938. When Dr. R. L. Moore felt the need to lay down his baton after forty-one trying but magnificent years since the symphony had what might be termed its second beginning near the close of the nineteenth century, the Board of Trustees unanimously selected the younger Blackwell, who for several years had been one of the most celebrated players, to take his place on the podium. The campaign to put the bountiful aesthetic and materialistic values of the Sym- phony before the public had already begun, and when the new impresario lifted the baton, he realized that the stage was much too inadequate to accommodate the instrumentalists and permit the resonance which was produced to reach the audience with maximum force. The symphony was small and even though it was well balanced, more players were needed to complete the many sections. But there was little room for them until physical facilities were improved. Since the players come from distant counties. cities, and even states, and are required to spend years in intensive practice before appearing in public for concert, excellent living accommodations had to be provided for them. Our energetic im- 'presario saw that this was done. Two new dormitories were built for girls, a building containing numerous rooms for practicing the scientific approach to the study of the symphony, and a modern cafeteria were erected while the instrumentalists practiced and strove for perfec- tion. Our most urgent need is a concert hall with provisions for all types of productions by the full symphony. We are conhdent that it will come in the near future. Our impresario is determined that our symphony shall grow and with it the soft Zephyr- like harmonies and the majestic chords that compel an audience to sit in its presence. Behind his lively baton stands our impresario directing us, in the words of William Henry Channing, To live content with small meansg to seek elegance rather than luxuryg and refinement rather than fashion, to be worthy, not respectableg and wealthy, not richg to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act franklyg to listen to stars and birds. to babes and sages, with open heartg to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasion, hurry neverg in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious grow up through the common. This is our symphony. 10 T.-, ,D it U' J .,, i SIIJICYI' IIUYI' llI,X1,lxXXl,l,l, 11 I g 1 will c TRO JOHN W. HLIFF, M.A. Regislrar and Hearl. The 1951 football season marked many changes and improvements. For the first time in the history of Mars Hill College. the Lions played llllflel' lights on the home field. During the summer a group of interested alumni met to form an athletic club. known as the Lions Club, whose aim is to promote a better brand of athletics. Landers Cottage was set aside as a place of residence for foot- ball players. This enables the boys to become better acquainted with each other. thus producing better team work. Don ,l. Henderson began his second season as Head Coach of the Lions. A local product. Bob Edwards. is a most able assistant. Early in September. thirty-eight hopeful candidates. representing five states. reported for prac- tice to inaugurate the 1951 gridiron season. Letterman Hubert Garner was elected captain and alternate co-captains were selected before each game. With only four other lettermen reporting. Coaches Henderson and Edwards immediately began the task set before them. As a result a strong and spirited team was produced from the mass of newcomers. In the first game the coaches were rewarded as the squad swamped Presbyterian Junior Col- lege 31-0. Many freshmen came through in grand style. The strong forward wall of the home team held the Scotties to only twenty-seven yards rushing. With high spirits the Lions journeyed to the Memorial Stadium to meet Asheville-Biltmore in a conference game. However. their hopes were dampened as a one point margin decided in the Bull- dogs favor 14-13. On October 20. the Lions bowed in defeat as Lees McRae won by a margin of two conversions. The next game was played at home in the rain and mud against Tennessee Wesley'an. This was the only time during the season that the Lions were unable to score, although they did control the ball throughout most of the game. Another wide conversion kept the Lions from finish- ing in a dead-lock with North Greenville. Singleton scored the lone marker of the game to give Mars Hill a 6-0 lead. but a ninety-five yard TD drive by the Spiders could not be halted and seconds be- fore the final whistle they pushed across. In the homecoming game on Thanksgiving Day. Mars Hill led throughout the struggle only to see Asheville-Biltmore score in the final minutes to take the last game of the season. Those finishing their football days at Mars Hill were Bob Reese. Hubert Garner. Allen Shubert, Hal Buckner. Marion Powell. Bill Boyd. and Bob Townes. 30 1 :w','3',v ,', u ' Y'- 64 ,Q LX . rf C. '.. Dear Joyce, This is the hardest job that I have had yet. or at least since I took over the re- sponsibility of representing Wfhe Old North State. I found it extremely difficult to choose from so many pretty girls. especially since I have only a photograph of each. I do Wish that I could see and know the girIs individually, because to me personality and character often add a great deal to one's real beauty. However, I have given the matter serious consideration. I choose Miss Janet Ponder as queen of the 1952 edition of the LAUREL. From her picture. Janet appears to he a lovely girl with sparkling eyes and that all-important, wholesome 6'American Look. I surely have enjoyed working with you. and I hope that your animal is a great success.
