One may as well ask the ages wherein lies all good, or all happiness, for the answer will come back Not in one thing, but in many. Not in one symbol, nor in one virtueg not in one goal sought, nor in one philosophy lived, but in each and all woven into life's perfect patternf' Better it were to count the red leaves of an Autumn day, the flakes of a winter snow, or the drops of a Spring rain than to count the virtues which make up our college life. Realizing this, the Staff has tried to record in these pages the complete panorama of Mars Hill-the thousand and one things which went into the moments destined to be woven into c'The Pattern of Our Yearsf' jr , 'fs - sfMlff ? riff if af Q 'e ,fp fl 'JA 3 ff wig: f!,.i'i,':9Ml ,, . 1' f-1 fwqim FQ' 1' ,mfr Q Jvdtggaf H Q I4 'U rs ' ' . . a aa, , ' '-ff . Their lives have given to us a new insight into the joys of cooperation and eoinradeship as they have given unreservedly of their time and talents for us. Accordingly, spiritual values and academic values have been emphasized from the beginning. Its resources, both tangible and intangible, are for the use and benefit of its students, its faculty, and all others who are directly concerned. The students are to be congratulated upon the part they play in the life of the college from year to year. The Laurel is an eloquent reminder of this fact. My colleagues and I are happy to work with you on a campus where 'plain living and high thinking' are JW practiced. 12 l t R.kl.PII lXI:tR1tjmx LEE. MA. The Clio-Philomathian Hall echoes with the challenging strains ofthe Victory Chorus, the nos- talgia of Bless This Hall, and, grandest of all, that indescribable united thrill that so endeared Clio-Phi Standing Together. The serious program, Forsake the XN'orld, Look Up, brought out the truth that happiness cannot be found in material possessions. The humorous' program, k'Deeeit Comes Home to Roost, revealed through a story of a simpleton that deceit is usually returned to the deeeiver. Henderson hails from Loudon, Tennessee, He received his education at Tennessee Tech and George Peabody Coliegc For Teachers where hc received his Masters degree. His varied training and experience in the Marines and Y.M.C.A. work makes him capable for the new head of the physical education department. Coach Bob Edwards is a local product who is serving his fourth year in the physical education de- partment. He received his training at Mars Hill and High Point Colleges. His teams in basketball and track as well as an excellent intramural program speak well in his behalf. Cominencement. These are the things worth remembering. These are the things that we will look back upon with quiet thanksgiving. for they are the things that shaped our lives . . . they are an important part of the pattern of our years. The LAUREL stallihas tried to recapture all of these passing scenes and events. and shape them into one vivid memory of Mars Hill. This has involved much work. thought, and preparation. and we realize that it could never have been done without the cooperation of all. Knowing this. we wish especially to thank those who have entered into the work with enthusiasm and interest. Sincere appreciation is extended to the entire student body. many of whom gave their time without recognition. We wish to thank lN'Ir. Emmett Sams, the faculty adviser, Dr. Hoyt Black- well, hir. A. McLeod, and lNIr. P. C. Stringiield. whose activity pictures contribute much to the LAUREL. The stafif wishes to thank lvfr. and Mrs. George Randall for their excellent photography and their cooperation in helping solve many of our problems. W'e feel that their capable handling of this department was of great importance. Wle have found Mr. Wlilliam Oliver Smith of Edwards and Broughton a ready source of helpful advice at all times. and we are grateful for his personal interest in our publication. To these. and to all others who have helped make the 1951 LAUREL a success we express our appreciation. and send our yearbook forth with the desire that it may be a constant reminder of the days spent at The Hill.
