Horr BLACKVVELL, Przfxidmt I have boiled down the importance of education to just two things: character and good manners. A man or woman who can develop good character with good manners is cducated because everything else will come. Without those two things there is no point of having schoolhouses or school-teachers because you cannot do anything with people who have not developed these two all-important things- character and good manners. l pass this statement from Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler on to the students of Mars Hill College with the hope that they may truly become educated. 14 . H ' f . . Y , Mars Hill College is a Christian institution which was founded upon the conviction that in the Christian faith are values which are not to he obtained elsewhere. and that these are of prime importance in the edu- A cative process. lts chief aim is to produce men and women whose ehar- acters have been redeemed and made over by the love of Ciod. ln an effort to achieve this aim it sets its standards of personal worth and social good in the jesus way of life. and seeks to lead its students to accept them. lt seeks to know the truth, and is loyal to the truth wherever it is found, and then by imparting this truth and the accumulated wisdom of the ages to its students, to make them effective in the service of man Llflel ciiid. This year the Philomathians displayed a very impressive anniversary which used the theme, Song of' Life. After the literary part of the program, the curtains parted revealing a black stage with only the faint outline of a series of arches visible. As the scene was slowly lighted, an introductory narration representing the Spirit of Music and Literature was given. A poetry reading, vocal solo, and choral selection followed. Finally the middle arch parted in two sections, revealing a beautifully lighted harp and scroll, the symbols of Music and Literature. anniversar 86 quest for tho grail ,FQ efqfgix Q g ' 'H , . Mars Hill had a large number of new boys on its team this year. This is generally true every year since a boy can play only two years. 'Pi develop a consistently winning team the players need to play together more than a single year. Though the statistics do not show it .Xlars Hill did not have too bad a season. Five ofthe games which the Lions lost were by only one touchdown. The team certainly played hard and showed good sportsmanship which is just as im- portant as actually winning, for if one plays his be-st he will win no matter what the score. football if Coscri Wooonow Ramsay COACH Bois Foxuuos 90 .Hwmr vnu' al' -... we GH-Gt fl-A Flirt mac, left to ritglzt: Coach Edwards. llvims, Lang, Saunders, Mycr, Butler, Hairc, Bmvinmi, Bennctt, Cwucli Ramsey.
