anifest Strength O strength of the mountains, They drained you of your meng They robbed you of the youth that grew in the shadows of your might, And having taken all, the drums of war retreated, But much remained. And the youth that marched in columns, The youth that bombed at night, The youth that crawled through fire, And the youth that sat and waited Left within your care that which meant life to them: A sunrise seen through tearless eyes, A clear bell ringing on a quiet night, A smile, and eyes that melt hatred and fear, Strains of music that rise from flooding hearts and sweep up into the hills, joyous and thrilling laughter, The twitter of birds, the soft notes that suddenly burst into a rapturous melody, An unseen feeling that binds human souls in perfect love, in understanding, A sunset that tints the mind with calm, and that blinds the soul to all but beauty, The silence of prayers that whisper of hope. And into a deeper silence they went forever, But some returned. 6 r FURE ORD We have spent some of the most momentous days in world history and some of the most formative days in our lives at Mars Hill, under the molding influence of our Alma Mater surrounded by towering mountains. We have learned to look upward with a new faith at a time when we needed it most. These mountains and the college walls have served to shield us from the agonies of a war stricken world, but we did not forget to look beyond the hills and walls to count the cost of fear and hate. We could not forget because of the absence of hundreds of boys-boys who would have chosen to be here under the shadow of these quiet hills. The spirit of these cool, serene, and peaceful mountains suggests the motif for this edition of the LAUREL. During, the spring of 1945 we rejoiced together over the defeat of Germany. When we returned to the campus in the autumn, Japan had fallen, and we began our year of work together in a world at peace for almost the first time in our lives. Now the time has come for some of us to leave these mountains of inspiration. New horizons beckon and we go, taking with us much which cannot be forgotten. Things like Bailey's peak, forever reflecting the mood of the mountainsg the ecstasy created by the golden hills at autumn, forever to be a joyg the high ideals of society, forever spurring us on to the best: the smiling faces of true friends found here, forever to be remembered as diadems in crowns of loveg the fellowships and watches, forever to inspireg the teachers who have imparted to us truth, forever to be honored by our contributions to humanity-all these and many more real values will pass with us into life and remain always, because the things received here will not crumble with consuming time.
