The cast was under the direction of Mrs. Jean Patton and her assistant, Marilou Enders. Each one in the play worked very hard, learning parts and going to practice almost every night for four weeks. The spirit of co- operation between the cast and the various committees helped to make the play more of a success. 'Ianet fl.ois Gregoryl is hurried off to the mountains by her irate Aunt Thelma fElaine Forsythej because she disapproves of the rom- ance between her and Herb QlVlark Brookerl. Herb gets there ahead of them, puts on a false beard. acquires a phoney accent and asks Gabriel fDick Gentryj, the lazy caretaker, to give him a job as Cousin Sam from T, other side of the mountains N It is then that Aunt Thelma arrives with anet and Harold fBob Van Dykej whom Aunt Thelma hopes Janet will marry. Herb and Harold now steal the scenes with the jealousy of each other over Janet. Harold calls Herb a half wit hillbilly. Herb pretends that he has been insulted and pulls a knife. Ar that, Harold rapidly leaves and goes back to his home. Aunt Thelma soon discovers that Cousin Sam is Herb and the fireworks really begin. But an accident to Herbls Dad flVlerle Wilstmimj gives the plot an unexpected twist. And at the finish of the play we find romance blossoming all over the mountainside. This is an honorary society for forensic students who have excelled in debate and speech worlc. To be eligible for membership one must have earned twenty points in forensic activi- ties. This entitles him to the Degree of Nlerit and to wear the pin. When one has earned hfty points, he is given the Degree of Honor and an emerald for the pin. One Hundred points is the Degree of Excellence and gains a sapphire. The highest possible degree is that of Distinction, which merits a ruby for the pin. The purpose of this organization is to promote speech work among high school stu- dents. The officers of Nlars N. This was the Nlay Queen Coronation to be held annually on lVlay lst. Under the capable guidance of Mrs. Lat- shaw the crownings have been a tremendous suc- cess. The first year two queens were chosen, a Senior and a Junior, as there was no previous queen to crown the incoming one. Those chosen were -Iaclcie Richards as Senior Queen and Jean Ella Held as Junior Queen. The following year the same procedure took place and joan Erdner was named queen. She, in turn, presented the crown to Mary Jane Troop, who had been chosen Junior Queen for 1947. Mary Jane chose a court of eight girls and an equal number of boys. They were: Honey Lou Hetrick, Martha Alexander, Helen Prusnalc, De- loris Kearns, Muriel Kean, Veronica Kleber, Anita Kennedy, and Lyvonne Yoalcum. Their escorts were: James Boyce, Charles Cole, Don Crummy, Howard Hardt, Loyal Park, Dave Schneider, Al Xvard, and Bill Gearing. This year the Junior girl elected to the throne was Lois Gregory. She also chose eight girls and eight boys for her court. The girls chosen were: Mary Catherine Molloy, Jeanne Humes, Georgia Eurich, Emma Peterson, Carol Staley, Dorothy Veccharella, -Ioan McKay and Carolyn McDax'id. Their escorts were: Leo Kairy's, Mark Brooker, Paul Kennihan. Jim Alexander, Jack Danner, Harry Nelson, Bill Kelley, and Kenneth Phillips. Lois received the crown from Mary Jane on May 5th in a beautiful ceremony, complete with flower girls and a crown bearer. With the help of our band the 1948 May Queen Coronation was a great success. A. as it is commonly lcnown, is the national or- ganization of, by and for boys studying voca- tional agriculture in public secondary schools. This organization is under the provisions of the National Vocational Education Arts. High school departments of vocational ag- riculture provide four-year courses of systematic instruction in agriculture and farm mechanics. They are taught by teachers who are agricultural college graduates employed on a twelve-month basis. They follow up their instruction through- out the year by supervising the farming opera- tions of their students on their home farms. The average age of F. F. A. members is approximately 17 years. The major purpose of the Future Farmers of America IS to develop leadership, cooperation citizenship, improved agriculture, and patriotism The national organization includes charted state associates composed of local chapters situated only in public high schools having departments of vocational agriculture. There are four de- grees of active membership-- Green l land, Chapter Farmer, State Farmer, and Ameri- can Farmerf' Advanced through these grades of membership is based on achievement in vocational agriculture and progressive establishment in farm- ing. The F. F. A. of Mars was organized this year under the direction of Mr. Raymond A. Schar. This organization is growing rapidly and we wish it luclc in the future. It seems so odd that no mat- ter when one goes into the Home Ec Room, everyone seems to be industrious and so absorbed in their worlc. Cne soon learns, though, that they are all making something for that spring fashion show that everyone wants to be a success. From what has been said there is going to be dresses, suits, sports clothes, beach wear and other apparel. These girls are really very capable and every one is proud that Mars High has an organization such as this. iran th inixn urn-X it is 'Vinnie Sa 1 SHOI AND ACRICULTURE ROOM This is a new room added to our high school th s year Ir is u ed by those who take shop and agricultural courses In the agricultural course the bovs learned welding blacksmithing, cutting and fitting pipe They also learned how to do electrical work, working with wires and fixing motors They worked on farm machinery that needed small repairs and did other mechanical work Shop class was a required class for freshman and sophomore boys The freshmen started out with mechanical drawings They did this in a drafting room away from the machines and and worked with some of the smaller machines The Juniors and Seniors made bigger wood projects and learned how to make patterns and how to mold them Thev were taught how to solder and ht pipes The shop did a great deal ot maintenance work around the building repairing things for the band, repairing doors, and manx other helpful jobs Both classes spent the first semester prepar ing the new room for future work Bill Klir Y- sfni , Nz lj Cuyluvr. Xved- nesday and Friday, activity period, in the United Presbyterian Church across from the high school. The membership of the chorus consisted of those Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior girls who passed a singing test at the beginning of the first semester. Under the direction of Miss Nlary Ellen Craig, the girls did various exercises to get tuned up. No more than three songs were worlied on in a period as the words and music in each song had to be memorized. The chorus really isn't a cluh but an integral part of voice vworlt in the school, therefore, there are no officers It represents the school publicity t C HORUS when there is any singing to be done. Regular appearance of the Girls' Chorus include Bacca- laureate and the Christmas program, various concerts and the annual trip to compete for Con- test awards. Last year, the chorus won first place at County contest, held in Slippery Rock, and hav- ing had no competition at Edinboro they pro- ceeded on to State contests. There they won first place and thus everyone felt much rewarded for their hard worlc. Let s Go and the crowd responded enthusiastically bursting with school spirit Even at the basketball games away when they were completely without a cheermg section, the cheer leaders in their own small way spurred the play This year our girls introduced several new cheers such as Bobby Sox Step On the Starter Color Cheer and On the Beam These new cheers were lilced by the student body and were soon to become a permanent part of the cheering Again this year the girls donned their battle jackets and skirts made of the traditional blue and gold Along with these bright uniforms came the smiling faces of the girls which made them a group to be proud of This year there were three cheerleaders who graduated They were Ruth Vaughan Nlaltha Alexander and Anna Reisman Martha was chos en head cheerleader this year besides being the smallest and one of the peppiest girls in the group Under her capable leadership the girls practiced faithfully and Marthas fine cheermg ability was displayed at every game and pep meeting Ruth was another peppy cheerleader who really put forth a lot of effort and showd a lot tiring efforts were appreclated by everyone Anna was one of the shorter cheerleaders with much vim and vitality She joined them shortly after the beginning of football season and left a little after the openxno of basketball s 1 son because of an appendectomy Her serv c s nevertheless were greatly appreciated The three unior cheerleaders Georg a Fur ich Lois Gregory and Mary Catherine Molloy and one Sophomore cheerleader Maureen Mc Greevy dd a fine job this year and deserve a lot of credit Our hats are off to these seven girls who have given so much toward the activity of Mars High School i z ec 4' Z' ' ,. 0 0 , , 1 ', . n e'sma , inf' li't'iz0 . 1 I 1' ' . THE 'M' CLUB This club is not well known throughout the school. but its members areg for they are the lettermen of Mars High School. To gain admit- tance to this organization one must earn a letter in basketball or football. thus making it one of the most honorary societies in the school, as its members all have respective ability. This year's membership lists twenty-three names. The Seniors listed alphabetically are: jim Boyce, right half on the football teamg Charles Cole, a forward on the basketball teamg John Colonello, who played center and was a valuable member of the teamg Dave Colton, received his letter playing basketball Don Crummy who won three letters on the football team Paul Dunl ar prox ed himself 1 capable b1ckfield player Wayne Furich forward on the basketball team Bill Gearing, who played both football and basket- ballg Don Leslie, stellar guardg Bob Lollo, de- pendable right endg Bob Marshall, guard on foot- ball teamg Pat Molloy, star centerg Loyal Park, high-scoring forwardg John Pittman, plunging fullbackg Bill Starr, husky tackleg and Charles Windisch, tackle, who did a fine job. This year the team consis Georgia Eurich, Lillie Mae Jean Sahli, Maxine Porter, forwardsg Alice Robl, Anita man, Norma Yocom, Mary othy Stuclci as the guards. Mary Christensen, Beverly ted of Joan Kelley, liurich, Marie Sahli, and Mable Stuclci as Kennedy, Anna Reis- Mccombs, and Dor- Later in the season Porter, and Ardeth Harley were added to the organization. Due to appendectomies, Anna Reisman and Mary Nlc- Combs could not play for a portion of the season. The coach, Mrs. Miles, taught the girls many things this year. She once played on the Nlars High team. She has spent much time and work with the girls, which is deeply appreciated. This year there was a basketball clinic our girls received the honor of demonstrating the rules and regulations under the capable direction of their referee Miss Neithercoat The official opening of the season was the game with West Deer. Mars had an undisputable victory, the score being 30 to 17. The mascot was the uliittyf' Every time a guard or forward committed a foul and every time a forward missed a foul, the kitty reaped the unanimous sum of five cents. This year the girls had their own nights on which to perform. The preliminaries were intra- mural girls' games. As usual, there were some new plays. Although the signals were confused several times, the ingenuity of the players brought them out on top. The guards used zone defense the majority of the time. This was an undefeated ac- tion. PLANET DUST Planet Dust News due by the end of the weekf, Those are the familiar words which were echoed each month as the school newspaper was prepared to go to press. The procedure is as follows: The editor, Anita Kennedy and her assistant. Mark Brooker first call a meeting of the staff and give out the assignments. News items were written by Eileen Kelley and .lack Capenos. Thrilling football and basketball games were relived through the columns of Dave Colten and Don Crummy. Glammer Grammer, Here 'n' These and other features were cleverly written by Jo Ann King and Gloria Guyer. Lois Fredley kept the students informed on the music angles and Shirlev Cooper kept tab of the alumni. Assembly programs were expertly handled by Maxine King. Harry Stroble wrote the Exchange column and Chuck Cole was the Senior Editor. l-loney Lou Herrick and anet Shaw took care of the features The ads were rustled up by Andy Phillips and Chuck Norton Each home room elected a reporter, who turned in news concerning the stu- dents to fill the Ill Wind column. Those were Bill Gearing, Marie Sahli, Fred Stainbrook, Mary Christienson, Emma Peterson, Nlarjorie Rodgers, Janie Kiefer, Odette Bower and Charles Etter. After the news was proofread, it was turned over to the faculty advisor, Mrs. Virginia Bryant, who rechecked for grammatical errors, spelling and also supervised the typing. The news was typed by lNlatth1 Alexander, Joan Leonhart, Rachael l-lartung, Mary Lucot, Doris Miller, Rose Rush and Dolores Vogel. The news was then ready for the printer. A week later the home room reporters were swamped with nickels and dimes, as everyone wanted a paper. The paper came out about once a month. In April, a novelty issue was presented in view of April Fool's Day. This issue proved to be very popular with the students.
