Although neither of his parents were involved with the service, CAPT. MaoPherson had an uncle who was Port Captain in San Francisco. He re- members standing with his uncle and watching ships pass in and out of the harbor. This left an impression on him that would later influence him to become a naval officer. CAPT. MaoPherson graduated from the Uni- versity of Colorado and received his commission in April 1960. CAPT. MaoPhersonis first tour of duty was on the staff of Commander Carrier Di- vision Five embarked on the USS CORAL SEA in the Pacific. He commanded USS GLENNON and USS BRUMBY. In other tours he served as Op- erations Officer on the USS SHIELDS, Commu- nications Officer on the USS TOPEKA, Executive Officer aboard the USS UHLMANN and executive officer on the USS HAROLD J. ELLISON. CAPT. MaoPhersonis shore assignments in- clude Foroe Communications Officer for Com- mander Cruise - Destroyer Force, US Pacific Fleet, Coastal Operations, Naval War College, Na- tional War College, The Joint Staff tJ-3i, Organ- ization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the US. Naval Base at Guantanomo Bay, Cuba. CAPT. MaoPherson is impressed with the qual- ity of Midshipmen at the unit. He believes that because of defense outs, scholarships are more competitive, therefore the overall quality of Mid- shipmen has improved. The sailing program and the new computer equipment are two additions to the unit which the Captain is particularly proud of. He believes that the units primary concern now should be re- cruiting and he hopes to eventually have 250-300 Midshipmen in the unit. V re. '2 a z 7;, a i. ? .x x .
