1 PHOTHOLE The 1988 Porthole is dedicated to the units three outstanding secretaries, Pat Hojhacki, Beth Gruber and Margret Silva. Their continuing dedication and professionalism keep the unit running smoothly. Special thanks goes to Beth Gruber, whose courage in the face of hardship serves as an inspiration to us all. was , 1 2 a a 4,472; I V I s 1, 4-99.... 7'4 v ..e . Although neither of his parents were involved with the service, CAPT. MaoPherson had an uncle who was Port Captain in San Francisco. He re- members standing with his uncle and watching ships pass in and out of the harbor. This left an impression on him that would later influence him to become a naval officer. CAPT. MaoPherson graduated from the Uni- versity of Colorado and received his commission in April 1960. CAPT. MaoPhersonis first tour of duty was on the staff of Commander Carrier Di- vision Five embarked on the USS CORAL SEA in the Pacific. He commanded USS GLENNON and USS BRUMBY. In other tours he served as Op- erations Officer on the USS SHIELDS, Commu- nications Officer on the USS TOPEKA, Executive Officer aboard the USS UHLMANN and executive officer on the USS HAROLD J. ELLISON. CAPT. MaoPhersonis shore assignments in- clude Foroe Communications Officer for Com- mander Cruise - Destroyer Force, US Pacific Fleet, Coastal Operations, Naval War College, Na- tional War College, The Joint Staff tJ-3i, Organ- ization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the US. Naval Base at Guantanomo Bay, Cuba. CAPT. MaoPherson is impressed with the qual- ity of Midshipmen at the unit. He believes that because of defense outs, scholarships are more competitive, therefore the overall quality of Mid- shipmen has improved. The sailing program and the new computer equipment are two additions to the unit which the Captain is particularly proud of. He believes that the units primary concern now should be re- cruiting and he hopes to eventually have 250-300 Midshipmen in the unit. V re. '2 a z 7;, a i. ? .x x . Each one excels in his particular field in the military and sets a fine example for Marquette's aspiring young naval officers to follow. Cmdr. Pierce is the Executive Officer of the unit. He is also responsible for teaching VC Midshipmen leadership and management skills. Cmdr. Pierce is involved in unit extra curricular activities. He coached this year's successful unit basketball team. The MOI, Major Wilson teaches Marine courses and keeps the Midshipmen battalion in line. Thanks to him, the battalion is now organized as a Marine battalion would be and everything runs much more smoothly. Lt. Lund is the 2K3 instructor. When not in class confusing hapless 2K3 Midshipmen, he enjoys such activities as basketball and water polo. This is Lt. Lund's last year at Marquette. Lt. Whitehead is also leaving the unit this year. He will be greatly missed by all who had him as an instructor for Naval Weapons Systems and Naval History. Lt. Whitehead is the faculty advisor for the Porthole, Navy Ball and he is also deeply involved with the sailing program. Lt. Hanneman has just completed his first year here at Marquette. He is infamous for being the only NASC instructor to assign homework on a regular basis. He is also heading up Marquette NROTCls recruiting effort and can often be seen lurking in the units passageways trying to lure some unlucky midshipmen into the dreaded mail-out trap. aop to bottom, left to rightl: Cmdr. FALL SPORTS Soccer Team Gains Valuable Experience Football Team Produces Winning Season The unit soccer team finished the 87 Fall season with a 500 record. Although the season was only two games long, there were many bright moments. In the game against Madison, defense was the major element. It was the aggressive play of Midn 24C Mur- phy and Midn 24C Sheehy that kept Marquette in the game. The team battled in a 1-1 deadlock for 90 minutes until the sheer finesse of the offensive team took over in the shoot out? With the expert goaltending of Midn 240 John Hollander and the sure shooting of Midn 24C Grzymkowski, Midn 24C Loughran and Midn 24C Ri- ley, Marquette received a well earned victory John The Hand 4 Hollander shows off his goalkeeping skills. MEETING OF THE MINDS: Coach Major Wilson discusses game tactics with captains Martens, McDonnell and Schlise. The NROTC flag football team finished another win- ning season under first year coach Major Wilson with a 2-1 record. After suffering an opening day loss to Mar- quette Army 1-46, the team rebounded by beating UW Madison Navy 20-14 and Northwestern Navy 26-18. The team was motivated by captains WC Martens, 2K3 McDonell, and 2K3 Schlise, as they practiced three days a week from the beginning of September to mid- November. Most Valuable Player honors went to 3K3 Schmolesky on offense and 2K: MCDOheII on defense. Hoopsterts Successful Year The 1987-88 NROTC basketball season was a success in many ways. The season got off to a great start with the arrival of Cdr. Pierce in the Fall. ttHawkeye'i enthusiastically assumed the coaching duties and quickly procured new uniforms. The team began practice in November and beat Marquette Army a few times before Christmas. Second se- mester saw the team make strong showings at the Notre Dame Air Force and Purdue Sports Festival Tournaments, while defending their Mar- quette Army ROTC Tournament Championship. The team concluded the season with a 4th place finish in the Midwest NROTC Tournament at ' Great Lakes, IL. The leadership of the UC Midshipmen will be missed 4; next year. A strong nucleus of talent, however, will return. Midh. WC Wilczynski was selected the teams MVP. x . t, V A 8. .xe ,V x -. . x g QAXRV K4 xx. ' . Innertube Waterpolo: A Walk On The Wet Side This is the second semester that Marquette NROTC has par- ticipated in the Rec Center's in- tramural innertube water polo tournament. What could possibly motivate midshipmen to don silly hats and innertubes and float in a swimming pool like giant cheer- '''' ios? The answer - FUN! Although the Navy Seals did not place first in the tournament, -. they were always first to get to 4 . the G loo after the games. After i' all, winning isn't everything. Karate Club Completes 2nd Successful Year Throughout the year, the Karate Club has given exciting demonstrations of their skill. These demonstrations consisted of free spar- ring, forms, and board breaking. Lots of hard work, long hours, and dedication have made the participants in the Karate Club excellent students who are able to perform such feats. Under the skilled leadership of Midn 2N Mike Wieczorek, the Karate Club has become one of the most successful unit activities this year. 3' Ff, 455' -;5; 'f- 2:; 'ff-e . 3. .. Cook and Ens. Lohman. Marquette, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the University of Iowa all had midshipmen who participated in the program and learned basic sea- manship, sail rigging and the mastery of the high seas' Many port calls were made to promote camaraderie among the shipmates. Mackinac was the hands-down favorite. Some Midshipmen were lucky enough to race the Guerre de Course in the Chicago-Mackinac race. Although Guerre de Course was sold to a private owner in November, MUNROTC acquired the Wild Onion in the Spring. Hopefully, SAILTRAMID '88 will be as adventurous and mem- orable as SAILTRAMID i87. ' J v1.5.3.1- ' A sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach? The day we have all been dreading has arrived. Some Mids greet the PRT tphysical readiness testl as a chance to display their strength and speed. Others see the PRT as the final stumbling block to successfully completing another NROTC semester. Sit ups, push ups, the one and a half mile run, and the dreaded toe touch must all be executed above the minimum standard to pass. Sound difficult? It isntt but many Mids contemplated getting in shape a little sooner as they stagger back across the endless 16th Street Viaduct. h A-h-va---.'-. a ....'...-.-- .. Run entirely by midshipmen, the bat- talion meets once a week on Thurs- days for a two hour period of instruc- tion and drill. During the Fall Semester, Midn UC Dave Wong assumed command and, with the hel p of BNXO M id n U C Keith 5' Martens, ran an efficient and motivated H W 1 3 t battalion. Under the command of Midn UC Dave Gou Id, the S pri n 9 semester bat- talion fared equally well. He and BNXO Midn UC John Miller worked hard to keep the battalion up to its excellent standard. Several battalion-wide events were held in the Spring, includ- ing the Navy Ball and the Battalion RuntPicni. These events helped to in- crease morale and unity among the midshipmen. Overall, the 1987-88 school year saw an already excellent battalion become an exceptionally outstanding battalion, one of the best in the nation. Navy and Ma- rine Option Midshipmen went their separate ways in Naval Science courses. While the Marine Options were busy learning how to be Ma- rines, the Navy Options were busy learning how to get lost on the high seas. HMO boardsit became a dirty word and some Midshipmen com- plained of nightmares in which they were chased by giant parallel rulers. In the battalion, these Midship- men got their first taste of leader- ship and responsibility. Holding po- sitions ranging from squad leader to staff billets, they learned that these jobs are not as easy as they look. Overall, the WC Midshipmen did an outstanding job in both their ac- ademic and military pursuits and are well on their way to becoming fine officers. rrighU: MIDSHIPMAN OF THE MONTH re- cipient Todd Umentum accepts his award from Capt. Once you know what you are doing, Midshipman In Ranks is not such a bad position to hold. The 3K3 Midshipmen were, however, kept on their ao- ademio toes as they learned of the joys of Naval weaponry first semester, and the even greater joys of Naval history second semester. Becoming adjusted to the military way of doing things takes time. Mistakes are made and reprimands are received with a stiff upper lip. By the end of the first semester, the 4K3 Mid- shipmen had learned the ropes and con- fidence began to replace the fear found in their eyes on Thursdays. After helping each other learn the unique art form called close order drill, staying up late together for NASC study sessions, and swapping spit shine se- crets, the thirty individuals that came here at the start of the school year became a Close knit group. As a group they are ready to take on whatever the next three years of NROTC gives them. rthis pagei: TOUGH GUY Midn 2K3 John Olsen teaches 4K3 Mids Miguel Beckles and Michael Noel the iilim in Chargei' stare.
