A BKARQI' ., na Off L, 1 u., Vl 59, - 1 U1 ff ! n ...V- Gy? . 9. .S. NAVAL RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS No matter how much information and advice a parent passes to his child, a teacher to his student, or a superior to his subordinate, there is always a fairly high percentage who seem to know it all or who prefer to follow the philosophy of Hlet me find out my own wayfl Many of your freshmen classmates with this outlook who failed to heed advice to develop sound study habits and to engage in moderate social activities did not last to seethe second semester. To one who has been in the service for a time it is most frustrating to see each new officer proceed blindly into a task and make over and over again the same mistakes as those before him. Remember, there is very little that you will encounter throughout your life's career-be it military or civilian-that someone has not tried, or at least thought of, before. The reasons for another's failure to succeed or for discarding the basic idea should be of interest to you if you are contemplating the same course of action. The fact that a procedure for doing something is old 'does not automatically mean that it is obsolete--although too, just because it is old and time tested does not mean that it is absolute and need not be questioned. . This brings one last piece of advice. It is not quite true, as father says, that 'fyou are now on your own, son, for you have the wisdom, the experiences and mistakes of many who have gone before you to draw upon. It is a wise man who takes advantage. I recommend to you that you seek out these experiences and benefit thereby if you are to prevent walking over the same worn out path. Donit make over again all the mistakes of others before you-your life isn't long enough! The NROTC staff joins me in wishing the very best to each new Ensign and Second Lieutenant. You have performed well as a class and as individuals during your college years at Marquette. There is no reason why you should let up at the beginning of this most important turn in your life. Your future will be filled with the excitement of journeys into space and voyages to the depths of the seas. We know that you will meet the challenge and take your places among the leaders in these endeavors. May fair winds and following seas be yours in an exciting and rewarding Navy or Marine Corps Career. Bernard A.
