NAVAL RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS No matter how much information and advice a parent passes to his child, a teacher to his student, or a superior to his subordinate, there is always a fairly high percentage who seem to know it all or who prefer to follow the philosophy of Hlet me find out my own wayfl Many of your freshmen classmates with this outlook who failed to heed advice to develop sound study habits and to engage in moderate social activities did not last to seethe second semester. To one who has been in the service for a time it is most frustrating to see each new officer proceed blindly into a task and make over and over again the same mistakes as those before him. Remember, there is very little that you will encounter throughout your life's career-be it military or civilian-that someone has not tried, or at least thought of, before. The reasons for another's failure to succeed or for discarding the basic idea should be of interest to you if you are contemplating the same course of action. The fact that a procedure for doing something is old 'does not automatically mean that it is obsolete--although too, just because it is old and time tested does not mean that it is absolute and need not be questioned. . This brings one last piece of advice. It is not quite true, as father says, that 'fyou are now on your own, son, for you have the wisdom, the experiences and mistakes of many who have gone before you to draw upon. It is a wise man who takes advantage. I recommend to you that you seek out these experiences and benefit thereby if you are to prevent walking over the same worn out path. Donit make over again all the mistakes of others before you-your life isn't long enough! The NROTC staff joins me in wishing the very best to each new Ensign and Second Lieutenant. You have performed well as a class and as individuals during your college years at Marquette. There is no reason why you should let up at the beginning of this most important turn in your life. Your future will be filled with the excitement of journeys into space and voyages to the depths of the seas. We know that you will meet the challenge and take your places among the leaders in these endeavors. May fair winds and following seas be yours in an exciting and rewarding Navy or Marine Corps Career. Bernard A. Rnchards 6 Vaughn F. Jacobs, STI Mrs. Janet Schneider ,- 5 5 N Z it I . . i' A yearbook is primarily for seniors, a dedication to their diligence in at- taining the rank of ensign in the United States Navy. Of course, the industry does not lie solely with the midship- man, it also includes the stall who mold and guide the inexperienced freshman into a man capable of serving his coun- try and himself with credit and dignity. Typical of the new 4!c midship- man is W. T. Door, a graduate from your high school, who is just like you were not too long ago. Door is you, he is a prototype of every midshipman in the NROTC program. Door occupies a central place in this publication, and since he is just a caracature of you, it is obvious that the theme of this book is you, the most appropriate subject possible. The Porthole will follow you from those lirst awkward moments to that linal day when you receive your ensign bars. All your activities, drills, classes, cruises, and candid moments have made this book what it is. The Porthole staff has just pasted the pic- tures ing you are really responsible for this-a record of your accomplish- ments. The Porthole asks you to put yourself in W. T. Door's place and re- live those times which made you what you are. For those of you who are not seniors, much of this book will be dreams not memories. However, the book is as much yours as anybodysg you have lived much of this, too. That which you cannot attribute to your real experience, reflect upon-it is your guide for the future. ,,,1,u,.4,,.. f 7. .-, -, .pn ' L . .,' f.- if . Commanded by Midshipman 2!c Joseph l-losteny, the team emphasized precision and coordination in their drilling move- ments. To further develop coordination, emphasis was placed on inter-platoon spirit, with the amplification of '6God's Squad Competition Cstringent competition based on inspection, drill and military knowledge within the four squadsj and a couple of unparalleled parties. The team made their first appearance in the Tip-Off Parade, exhibiting tradi- tional marching movements. Appearing at the Loyola-Marquette basketball game later in the year, they displayed a modified version of this year's routine, and also performed during the parade honoring astronaut Lovell. The efforts of the team reached their climax at the annual Madison Drill Meet. The Drill Platoon was particularly outstanding this year in participation in the Unitis extracurricular activities. DP almost single handedly built the Tip-Off floats, and consistently proved itself the mainstay of Anchor 8z Chain. In addition, the team kept up its tradition by producing five of the seven winners of the Midship- man of the Month awards. v 23 ,Al J.. 27' -as -vs. 'VT apgnnann 'Zim i I 1 1? 2553- 1 Q. Summer cruise serves to increase the professional knowledge of the midshipmen, and gives midship- men a look at the different aspects of the Navy in order to help them in their particular choice of assignment upon graduation. v I During third class summer cruise, traditionally called youngster cruise, a midshipman is placed aboard ship in the capacity of an enlisted man. During the next six to seven weeks he learns the life of an enlisted man by actually taking that man's place. On a destroyer, for example, a mid- shipman might stand bridge watches one week while the next finds him in the 1100 heat of the boiler room. Deployed aboard ships of the First or Second Fleet, most of the time is spent con- ducting exercises off the East of West coasts of the United States. Youngster cruise involves a lot of ' hard work, but undertaken with the proper attitude, it can be both enjoyable and profitablej Second class summer olfers an entirely differ- ent type of training. During PHIBTRAMID, the midshipman undergoes a rigorous indoctrination program of Marine Corps tactics and operations. This training period takes place at Little Creek, Virginia, and is highlighted by a full scale am- phibious landing. The second classman then goes to Texas for what most midshipmen consider their most enjoyable and exciting cruise-flight indoc- trination training at NAS Corpus Christi. Here the future officer finds an opportunity to fly in various naval aircraft-ranging from the old T-34 to modern jet trainers. To the new first class, summer cruise means a seven week cruise as a junior officer aboard anything from a submarine to an aircraft carrier. In their capacity as junior officers, first classmen take an active part in .the everyday administration of a ship underway. This cruise provides a real opportunity to see the ublack-shoe Navy as it actually is, and a chance to put into practice lessons learned in the classroom. For the first time, midshipmen assume some of the duties and responsibilities that they will face as new ensigns. Summer cruise programs do not attempt to show a midshipman all the aspects of Navy life. They do, however, offer an excellent cross-section of the major roles an officer may expect to play in the complex, modern Navy. i .-za-t 'C 1 '- f a VM ' A 5E7 I'lN5 :tk a SERS1clg E 4 VTE.
