I am a V-5, which is to say, I belong to that well-known category classified under HBuzz Boys . With the aid of men like Van Etten, Schwarz, Fisher and Boike, I shall be able to relate to all who may be inter- ested, the Hwhys and wheres of the Stratford Arms. With our last Friday class behind us, we walk down Wisconsin Avenue as it we owned it twe almost doll After a short Hstay in the Parker House ttraditionl, we weigh anchor and move on to the USS Stratford Arms which was grounded on a beach attack sometime around the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It is now lov- ingly referred to as SOS Strattord. The RO's lived here first! Well, can you imagine this? The duty platoon is swabbing the. lobby with First Lieutenant Beierle . . er, rather . . . First Lieutenant Beierle is cracked . . . er, is cracking the whip. Poor Stanley, Mathews, Schaper and Sievert are working hard on the deck as throughout the Stratford is heard the pitter- patter of little and big feet, as fellows run around with buckets of soapy water, cans of Bon-Ami tthis is a plug . . . it costs money to print this thingl, and other articles used in giving the Stratford her weekly bath for the Captain. Next on the schedule is HChow . This is becoming a very monotonous affair. We will probably have T-bone steaks again . . . Boy, were those beans good that ONE time we had them! It is now 1830 tl am confused with this Navy time . . . I am only a V-5 and not yet a sailorl, two hours until long-awaited llMixer Time . With Barney's Closed and the iiPost slightly uncomfortable for large groups, we decide to study a while, but instead we zoom over to the Varsity for a quick triple-feature and eight comedies. Returning to the room for cigar, ettes, we see a certain eX-Company Comv mander walking down the hall with a tray of 168 l ice-cubes. It is hard to determine What he is doing with these trays! Now . . . on to the Mixer! You know we pay to get in now . . . just like Heverybody do . . . Can't figure out how that happened! tAs it we didn't pay beforel Now we are thinking that we will get that cold bottle of beer we have been dreaming about all week After beating my way through the crowd, a smiling co-ed greets me with the words, iiSorry sonny . . . but all we have left is Zip and Pep . . . ' tAt this time, I am minus even thisj With a silly grin through the lipstick she's wearing, I forget about the beer, take a coco- cola and resign myself to an evening of SOFT DRINKS. Upstairs on the gym floor the crowd has really turned out . . . er rather, iiturned-in . . . and everyone is, having the usual good time. Over in the N orthwest corner of the gym stands the usual assortment of V-S gentlemen like Petty, Lieb, Peters, Rux, O'Hara and Moy Snider can not be included in the above . . . but he is also there! Generally the dances are conducted accord- ing to Hoyle or Emily Post but since neither one can make it, Marchetti takes over. Around 2350 twe are due back to the bare- llracks at 2400i we give our escorts a hasty HGoodbye, see you tomorrow night! and are off like a cloud of dust. After turning in our liberty cards at 2359, we go up the ladder past the empty MOD's chair on the first deck, past the same sight on the second deck . . . and likewise on the third and fourth. Of course, the MOD's are inspect- ing the decks, really . . . that is! Cataline, Donaldson and lverson are still discussing the wonderful time at the Mixer as the MOD quietly ambles along the passage- way, HQuiet . . . Youse guys! Thus, with the varied sounds of the Stratford Arms lulling us to sleep, we let this hectic Friday night slip into the past and we dream of Captain's Inspections and long rows of glitter- ing H40 marks. ..
