Tradition colors pow wow The steady beer of rhe drums fiIIed the air 05 the soft jingle of bells blended with the rribol songs of centuries long posr. Dancers were adorned in brillionr colors of red, blue, orange, purple and green, oll woven into beautiful designs. Intricate beodwork ond feorhers of every shape, size, and color e port of the huge, elaborate headdress - covered rhe doncers' heads. Smoorh fur covered rheir legs and beaded buckskin moccasins skipped Iighrly as rhe Indians engaged in o m'bol dance, These were the images creored or Marquette Universiry American Indian Srudenr Association's second annual pow wow in September. Menominee, Oneida, Poroworomi, Apache, Sioux, and many orher different tribes rook porr in the pow wow held in front of Lolumiere Holl. As many of the visiring Indian families arrived, 0 bond seemed ro develop among them. Ir Ohe pow wowT is a unifying factor for the Indian people, said Mark Deming, Morquerre's Firsr Warrior. The pow wow also gives rhe Indian people great pride, he said. Though rhe dress of the spectators wos modern e casual orrire like jeans and T-shirrs e it seemed as rhough rime had moved backward. Tribe elders bobbed their heads, memories of rhe posr reflected in rheir wrinkled faces.
