the institution ... 16 I had allowed myself to forget how the circus had come to my town one summer when I was young. Things were different then — I had been so excited. It was a Friday afternoon when the animal-wagons pulled their way through the main street of our town — just a little after lunch. We all chased each other in the dust of the wagons, and we roared and hollered and trumpeted trying to mimic the animals as best we could. And when we finally caught up to the front of the parade, we saw (and knew) what it was we most wanted to become. Oh there were elephants and lions, tigers and bears; but certainly the clowns were the most unforgettable — especially the clown-on-the-bicycle. People who heard us wondered why we called him that (you see, none of the clowns rode bicycles) — it's just that none of the other clowns would speak to us. and well ... he was sort of the spokesman. Anyway, someone had thought of calling him that, and it just stuck. the college...38 14 . table ot contents
