NARRATOR: The shops and places of busi ness which occupy space on the Marquette campus are like big fish in a small stream. They are far from frenzied downtown Milwaukee where stores viciously compete for the business of a well-mixed buying audience. Within the campus grounds there are several food shops and bars, a couple of drug stores, a few clothing shops and two or three churches. There are also laundromats and barbershops and banks and the- aters and card shops and cleaners. In every instance the Mar- quette community is the major source of their income. If the university were to dis- appear the stores and places of business would soon follow. Some stores realize this. Some attempt to make the Mar- quette student feel welcome. Some are genuinely concerned about the affairs on campus. Some hire Marquette students. Some even advertise in the Tribune. Many do not. Many should swim downstream.

The women are housed in renova ted hotels in most cases. Some were never renovated. The men are sheltered in two impressive, color-televisioned and marble- slabbed structures.
