Indian summer convocation: dedication to students, (acuity and future goals Time designated for an annual assembly ... a dignified procession of college deans decked with academic regalia ... band and choral selections ... recognition of scholastic achievement by a presidential handshake. A restless audience of half-interested students, attentive faculty and honored parents. A presidential address of Marquette’s goals: “A community bonded together by the common objective of searching for and communicating truth.” A community coping with an explosive age, characterized by “the accelerating advance of contemporary man.” An advancement such that the assimilation of data in any area of human inquiry exceeds the capacities of individual scholars and thinkers. A knowledge explosion in which our educational venture must be clearly self-aware. 28
