Soccer, the national sport of many countries, has arrived at Marquette. When Marquette dropped football in 1961, Dr. Barry F agin, associate psy- chology professor, took the opportunity to establish a soccer team on the Marquette campus. Fagin, a former player and coach, had been trying to do this for several years. Fagin formed a soccer club to see if student interest warranted an intercol- legiate team. Many of the club members, and most of the team, were foreign stu- dents who had been playing soccer since they were children. Competing in an industrial league with teams of national championship cali- ber, the clubis first season was a poor one. Last fall the team played in the same league but added several college teams to its schedule. After defeating Illi- nois and Notre Dame, contenders for the Midwest Soccer Conference champion- ship, the Marquette team was invited to join the conference, a group of 28 colleges and universities. The teamis conference membership must be approved by the Athletic Board and the University president. Autumn weekends may once again become sports weekends that this year's student can sup- port only on other campuses. 21553 16 Mass of the Holy Ghost if aidgi., I RTQQJL WQQQMQQ LLL'L .'h'- 535375 ' A MH 1 While the familiar ritual of the Mass remained unchanged, the Mass of the Holy Ghost took on special significance, as an offering of the Klar- quette community. Students gathered in Gesu Septemher 25 to invoke the aid of the Holy Ghost in this yearis studies. Although their petitions varied, Fr. Charles I. Mehok, SJ., suggested an additional, common purpose for their prayers in his sermon. Maintaining that the influence of the Catholic graduate on society is insufficient today, Fr. Mehok reminded students that if they are to live up to their commitment to knowledge, they must become a sacrificing and courageous community dedicated completely to God. Marquette students could hecome such a community through the Holy Ghost, he said. The Blass of the Holy Ghost, in his view, pre- sented an opportunity to pray for hoth success and courage: success in academic suhjects, courage to practice Marquette ideals after gradu- ation.

Graduate School Fr. Lawrence W. Friedrich, SJ. A primary function of a gradu- ate school is to develop the inde- pendent scholarf, asserted Fr. Lawrence W. Friedrich, SJ., Grad- uate School dean. To serve this function, research assumes pre-eminent importance at Marquette and is pursued both on and off campus. Fr. Friedrich said it is a method of learning which gives the student confidence in his ability to continue learning on his own after graduation.
