In an effort to accommodate a steadily increasing en- rollment that is expected to reach 18,000 by 1971, Mar- quette University has proposed plans for a S45 million program of expansion and development. The program will have as its goals the enlarging and modernizing of the campus, improving the faculty, increasing the number of student scholarships, and expanding the programs of research. The University's proposal, which is still in the pre- liminary stage, is to be financed with the help of the federal and local governments. Under the plan, Marquette proposes to expand its present 27 acre campus to 62 acres through acquisition of adjacent lands to the north and west. lf the program is adopted, Marquette's rectangular- shaped campus will extend west from N. 11 to N. 17 sts. and north from W. Clybourn st. to W. Kilbourn ave. The acquired land will be divided into academic areas, parking space, residence and physical education facilities. Other aspects of the development program include the allotment of large sums of money for a scholarship program for needy and qualified students, the appropri- ation of' millions of dollars for teachers' salaries and bene- fits, and the strengthening of the University's research facilities. The planners feel that by tapping the reservoir of potentially outstanding students who lack the financial means for a university education and by attracting the best teaching talent to the University, Marquette's growth in size will be matched by a growth in academic prestige. in lf I ff .
