28 L 4 TA When the College of Applied Sci- ence and Engineering opened in 1908, it offered a two-year curriculum to a total of 19 students. The potential engi- neers began their careers in the base- ment of Johnston Hall and shared chem- istry and physics laboratories with the College of Liberal Arts. Three years later the Engineering students, under the direction of Dean john C. Davis, received some practical engineering experience. After tearing down part of an old brick residence be- hind Gesu Church, they built a concrete structure with a deep basement and two floors for classrooms and laboratories. Many a prominent engineer of today can describe how he spent his first lab periods pouring concrete and reinforc- ing it with old ironware. When the building was completed in 1913, a four- year curriculum was introduced. Bellarmine Hall, the house that the Engineering students built, remained their home until 1941. In that year the present Engineering building on Wis- consin Avenue was completed. After World War II, the college purchased machinery from the War Assets Ad- ministration at comparatively small cost. Other engineering equipment has been donated by Milwaukee Industrial' firms. It would cost about 52,000,000 to dupli- cate the equipment today.

Dentistry is no longer a purely mechanical field. Today's dentist is oriented In basic sciences and must take the total health of the patient into consideration. Mar- quette's School of Dentistry has not failed to recognize this great advancement. Marquette College was affiliated with the Milwaukee Medical School in 1907 and of- fered courses in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy. BY 1922, the old Trinity Hospital at Ninth and Wells Streets was no longer adequate and ground was broken for the new Dental School. It was completed in the following year and was the second largest Dental School In the world. In that year a department of Dental Hygiene was added. In 1953, a new addition was built, joining the Dental School to the Medical School budding, permitting both schools to share many Of the same facilities. Another addition Was constructed in 1957, containing facilities for Children's dentistry, graduate and post- graduate instruction and research. l gy of N -r :dl t P- Q Q. fl V1- ft, r 4: Y I g ,Qui-f if
